Stocking up is panic or prudent? I think prudent.

SGAMMO is no longer taking new orders.

Picked up some .45acp today from Natchez for 11.49 per box of 50. They said they have plenty of .40S&W and .45acp but the 9mm is being scooped up like there's no tomorrow.

I have ample ammo for my shooting needs but I expect that by the end of the week, the local indoor range I patronize will be closed. By the time it reopens ammo will be plentiful again.

I figured all the idiots had hoarded up in 2014.

Just checked myself...yep...not going to be ordering any more ammo for a while.

I have about 1000 rounds of Speer Gold Dot for my .38's, plus about 950 rounds Speer Gold Dot in 9mm Parabellum. I have about 300 rounds of Speer Gold Dot for my .45's.

I have about 10,000 rounds of .22 LR. I have a few hundred rounds of .38 SPL FMJ left but I won't be practicing anymore anyway. Not with this going on. Dang. The indoor range was the one place I figured on continuing to go.

I had wanted to order 1000 rounds of .38 SPL Critical Defense but wanted to wait and until next month. C R A P.

See I do this extensive and slow testing of ammo to fit each defensive weapon.......the only testing I have completed is FMJ for .38 SPL.

Oh well......I am better off than most anyone I know.

Update:

Managed to score 500 rounds .38 SPL Critical Defense and 500 rounds .45 ACP Speer Gold Dot. Both have been tested and perform very well in my defensive revolvers and Kahr CW 45. The .45 Gold Dot hits low in my 1911's though.....

I went on and got 1 box of Sellier & Bellot 115 grain 9mm Parabellum for trial in the P9 Covert and K9.

I got caught flat-footed in 2014 and didn't have good defensive ammo for a year.....this go around though, I am much better off.

No "panic buying" here.....I was going to order 1000 rounds of each in the coming months anyway. This will last me as I won't be practicing much.

Couple/few years ago I bought a few thousand rounds of AmEagle 9mm at $0.128 per round after vendor free-ship, no tax, mfg rebates, and activejunky additional %.
The .45 ACP came out to just under $0.18 per round, iirc.
I also picked up thousands of 12g sporting loads (3de, 2-3/4, #8) at about 4 bucks a box, iirc. Maybe a little less.
The one I wanted but couldn't find at cut-rate was 357. . . so I bought the dies :-)
Mfgs were dumping ammo.
Thought it was good deals, but didn't recognize how very good it would look today, just a few years later.
I had expected similar deals to repeat, but still waiting . . . hoping that the ammo mfgs will build up huge inventories that they have to dump on the market again :-)

You did well. Maybe it'll come again.

Ammo is still available online, I scored my two main calibers in my two desired loads, but both websites were very, very slow. It was like the days of dial up! LOL

9mm Parabellum always sells out like mad, it's the main caliber for most everyone. In my case, I had just begun to get interested in it again and my point-of-aim and reliability tests for that caliber are in their infancy.

I like it too, have for years, but I doubt I have ever pronounced it correctly.

My FN Hi Powers shoot it very well but Cylinder and Slide recommended only Winchester White Box 115 grain to be shot in the Browning High Power.

I have read that S&B 85 grain FMJ 7.62x25 Tokarev will penetrate soft body armor.

It was after the Aurora, CO theater attack that I strongly considered carrying my Yugo Tok as backup with that load in case I needed to shoot through a body armor-clad attacker.

I later realized it was better to just master head shots with what I normally carried.

For a couple of years we have been telling our customers at our indoor range (we do not sell ammo) to stock up heavily while it was cheap. Many of them did and will continue to shoot. I built an AR when Hillary was guaranteed to be entering the White House. I also bought a couple thousand rounds of 5.56 ammo, some of it at its near high point of 40¢ per round.
One way to continue to get in some realistic training without actual shooting is look into buying a SIRT training pistol.

I have a full sized and a compact version which really gives you good feedback and there are reactive targets available.
The full size Glock and M&P version even have a weighted mag that will allow you to practice reloads. The compact version does not have that feature.
Most of us spend way too little time on moving and shooting. This trainer will allow you to clear every room in your house shooting at bad guys disguised as doorknobs.

Some models can be had for less than a couple rolls of toilet paper.

Here is my pocket version sanded down a bit to more closely resemble my P365.

I could shoot if I wanted to, but it would be surplus rifles calibers, which I don't have good range access right now nor am I interested in. I just didn't have the spare money to build a 10K stock of pistol calibers. (10K per caliber is what I prefer). I just recently got serious about load trials to find what target and defensive loads hit to point of aim in my carry pistols. I have that data for .38 Special but not for anything else.

I won't be going to the indoor range anyway to limit contact with people so it's a moot point.

Dad just told me the local food store had a run so most goods are sold out, even though WV still has no confirmed cases. I can deal with that as long as people are staying away from each other. Most people I have spoken with think this is a hoax by the media to bring down Trump.

I wouldn't shoot +P in a Hi Power and I think S&B runs rather hot anyway.

I don't know for 100% certainty that S&B ammo is produced to SAAMI specs, but I kind of assume it is, which would mean it should be perfectly safe in any firearm designed for 9mm. +P is another matter, of course...

Space is my biggest problem.......aside from being lazy. LOL. Do you really save that much money for common rounds like .38 SPL and 9mm Parabellum? Talking FMJ.

I do have thousands of rounds of one-fired brass though....saved in their boxes for years.

Bawanna
03-17-2020, 05:49 PM
If you have brass you can hand load and save money. 9mm is sometimes tough to save much as during normal times it's pretty cheap. If you have to buy brass I'd not bother.

To many reloading is another way to spend quality time with your guns and not drive to the range, some science in building your own loads that work well which is similar to you testing all your store bought rounds to see which work best.

Honestly it can be tough to match factory and very difficult to improve it much but it's still an enjoyable pastime. I haven't reloaded for quite a spell as I have lots loaded and lots of factory as well but I do have buckets of brass and lots of bullets to load. I mostly load only 45, never bothered with 9. I used to reload 38/357 and 44 mag and 44 special but don't shoot that much any more.

I load 30-30 and 30-06 on a single stage rock chucker for accuracy, do the others on my Hornady progressive for quantity fast.

DJK11
03-17-2020, 06:32 PM
Do you save money? I posted my cost, you decide. I’m a high volume shooter, mostly 45acp. I can load about 400 an hour and inspect each round in that time. They are more accurate and cleaner burning than factory rounds. Granted reloading is not for everyone but it’s not difficult.

I bought the Hornady basic “Lock N Load” kit today.

I have the Hornady Lock N Load kit. Mine came with some extras - the digital scale, and an ultrasonic cleaner. It also included the Hornady powder drop kit.

Mine only came with the insert and rotor to do rifle cases. If you plan on doing pistol ammo, you'll want to get the pistol rotor and insert kit.

https://www.cabelas.com/product/shooting/reloading/powder-handling/pc/104792580/c/104761080/sc/544895280/hornady-reg-pistol-rotor-and-standard-pistol-metering-insert/1317266.uts?slotId=8

I absolutely love the lock and load quick change system. Fast and accurate die swaps. I also use a cheap Lee de-primer to save the wear on the Hornady die.

You'll likely wind up picking up some extra inserts and lock rings too. I've loaded over 30,000 rounds with this kit. Good stuff.

Bawanna

The progressives are super fast compared to the single stage I used for years. It is kind of sensory overload as you have to pay attention to all the stations to make sure everything is happening. Don't want to run out of primers or powder etc.

I prefer to clean primer pockets and reprime using a Lee, I sometimes do that and skip those steps but usually it's easier just to run them thru the LNL. For pistol especially practice ammo which is 95% of what I load I don't think it matters. I never carry reloads as I want to be able to tell the prosecutor that I just carry what the guy at the gun shop said to carry.

Sometimes it's best to lower yourself down to lawyer mentality.

I wait until my lgs has one of their sales, and advertise their “loss leader” 50 round boxes of 9mm ammo (usually S&B) at around $7.50. I then go to Academy and ask for a price match. They match the price AND take an additional 5% off. I’ve stocked up a decent supply of that over the last year or so. I figure with the cost, time, space, etc to start reloading that it wouldn’t be worth it for me, giving the aforementioned prices. As far as the other calibers I shoot, I don’t shoot them often enough.
But..... I did buy two 12 packs of beer today. I usually only buy 1 at a time. So maybe I’m a bit panicked inside. If I run out, my buddy bought a lot of yeast, juices, etc, so maybe I can trade some 9mm rounds for some of his home made booze.

I have shot Gecco 158 grain in the revolver lineup and it shoots well in most, point-of-aim even. I would have adopted it as my FMJ practice load but PPU hit to POA in more weapons. Gecco was close though and I had high hopes for it. Accuracy was good, very consistent hits and tight groupings.

Prvi Partisan (PPU) won the trials for "FMJ practice load" as it was across-the-board POA hits with all carry revolvers except my then carry J-Frame.

PPU is also (well before this national emergency) very inexpensive.

Gecco is inexpensive also, good choice.

I told her "either I have suddenly become much, much stronger or this isn't all of my order." The 500 rounds of .45 ACP Gold Dot is still coming (I hope). The 100 rounds of Critical Defense 9mm was left on my porch.

No more testing for now but I know Critical Defense hits to POA in my carry .38 and the Gold Dot to point of aim in my Kahr CW 45.

I buy in bulk to save money and I know it will not be available for a long time. I did not have but 10 rounds of Critical Defense as it had just passed my "cartridge trials" and I did not have more than test batches on hand.

Good one. Could happen. Given China's actions, I say this was certainly "taken advantage of" with the intent that America collapses, the dollar removed/replaced as the world's financial reserve. That is a requirement to bring American down.

Telephone repair man came over and I met him at the door with my grinding shield on (full face shield) plus mask under. I gave him two masks to keep (wear one here). We took pains to sanitize his hands. He removed his boots and wore booties over his socks as we do not wear shoes in the house. HE THANKED ME AND STATED "YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON I HAVE SEEN TODAY TAKING MEASURES TO PROTECT ME."

I am protecting him, myself, and most importantly, my father. If my father gets this he will die. 20 years coal mining = black lung. He has diabetes and is 79 years old. Mom would want me to do this. She passed on last summer but she told me "take care of your dad."

Thank you.

I heard this off Fox News a week ago but I would have come to this conclusion anyway. ASSUME EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE YOU COME INTO CONTACT WITH IS CONTAMINATED WITH OR INFECTED WITH THE VIRUS.

Best information at this time for how long the virus can last on surfaces:

Paper = 4 hours
Cardboard = 24 hours
Metal = 72 hours
Plastic = 72 hours

I quarantine all cardboard and the mail for at least 24 hours. I put all plastic packages into the sink and wash with dish detergent. The virus capsule has a layer of fat on it and detergent dissolves fat. I even wash loaves of bread in their plastic bags.

I use a box by the door to collect keys, wallets, etc. from both dad and me. Then I wash the items that can be washed or hit with a bleach wipe.

I cut a bleach wipe into 1/3 and use on door knobs, switches, and the door handles and insides of the car, the things we touch.
