View Full Version : Repeated Chambering of Same Round is Trouble

Another article from The Gun Zone was an incident involving an agency gun where the practice is to use the same exact cartridge over and over as the chambered round. This practice pushes the bullet back into the cartridge causing 2 types of difficulties.

1. The bullet can become loose and slide into the barrel becoming an obstruction to the next round fired.

2. The bullet will decrease space in the cartridge and when discharged the pressure can exceed the guns capabilities.

Answer is to chamber fresh rounds, a practice already promoted by the experts.

See story here (http://www.thegunzone.com/glock/setback.html).

I made it a practice monitor my rounds that are ejected upon unloading, which happens quite rarely, and will only reload twice more before I pull the round and put it aside for my next range visit where it is fired. My CCW is only unloaded a couple times a year but bullet set-back is a real concern.

I should pay more attention to this. Usually, when I notice a round get compacted, I pull it out of the rotation if possible. I try to shoot it on the next range visit. Failing at that, I put it as the second round in the magazine so that it'll chamber. Like I said, I need to do more about this.

Even though it is somewhat a PITA I recycle the chambered round to the last one in the mag. (Involves unloading mag, putting the chambered round in the mag first, then reloading the rest in reverse order) This is done at the range so I don't forget, CRS you know!!

I frequently do that also. I sometimes just put the chambered round down a few in the mag if it looks good. If it don't look good it's set aside for future range day or if questionable I have a box they go into to determine what to do later.

Yup, agreed. I do the same sort of rotation. I learned this when I was much younger, and recall checking the round at the top of my carry gun's mag. The setback was significant. Since then, they get rotated if they get unloaded.

Heck - ONE chambering of Remington yellow box 9mm JHP showed HUGE amounts of setback. As a reloader, it scared me to be honest.

While I was taking the K9 apart and putting it back together for practice and a post, I decided to measure my rounds in that magazine. It's not the greatest accuracy due to variations in where I take the measurements, due to the irregularities in the rim of the hollow point.
My Double Tap 124-gr 9mm GD ammo ranged from 1.098" to 1.112"... all eight rounds different with only two below 1.1". That's only a .014" range and the difference is easily seen if you line the cartridges up in a single line and lay the flat back of the magazine on top of them. I took the tallest two and put them in last, one chambered. I'll shoot them next trip to the range.
