So I got into the garage and managed to get my 1970's "Physiofit" 3 speed bike down from where I'd hung it up in 2008. The tires took air. I donned a reflective vest, and headed out.
Apparently the old saying "it's like riding a bike" is true, I could do it and didn't crash. However......riding it down the road wasn't as easy as I recalled from my youth! Looking over my shoulder for traffic nearly resulted in a crash/me crossing into oncoming traffic!
I doesn't help that the pedals are not flat on both sides...
No more "road biking" for me. I will have to take it to a much safer but paved area. Fortunately I have a few places in mind.
The workout was intense though and when not facing death, it was very fun.....so that's good.

I keep thinking about my heavy aluminum mountain bike from Sam's club that I bought close to two decades ago. I think it's been in the attic for the last decade. The gears would slip sometimes going uphill and scared me. I tried to get just that fixed, but the shop said they would have to do a tune-up on the whole bike, They did that for $58 and didn't fix the damned gear problem, so I kind of gave up riding it.
I did replace the knobby tires with decent Continental street tires with thorn and leak protection. The tires are flat and I keep thinking about getting it down and trying it out... but I would rather spend an hour walking at mostly 4 MPH on my treadmill and watch Prime Videos... lots of series. I've watched several, several series and there are MANY left to choose. The A/C is nice, too, and the little fan blowing on me. :D I do run for at least ONE minute and use the incline, too. I go for over 3 miles, sometimes over 4, but in 288 sessions, I've logged over 944 miles, averaging about 3.3 miles per session.
I have a shelf mounted on the wall in front and stream video on a 20" flat screen and use Bluetooth earbuds to keep from annoying Wifey. I've been doing the exercise regimen for over two years every other day with breaks for travel, sickness, injuries, and doctor appointments and treatments. I had two lengthy breaks for injuries during my exercising from overdoing kicks and stuff. I'm nearing 74 and trying to stay in some kind of shape and decrease the one artery blockage of about 60% found during a bunch of testing almost 2 years ago. We'll see in May... if we get through this pandemic and can have regular doctor visits.

My bike is in my home office near the treadmill. It ain’t got any wheels.

First, you have to want to ride a bike and enjoy doing it. After that, it's easy - rear view mirror, comfortable seat, the right tires, maybe a better bike, etc.
Maybe something like this:

I ride 9.5 miles one day and 12.5 the next and average around 14 MPH. Forunately around here the police encourage you to ride sidewlks when available. I only ride about 1.5 miles without sidewalks and never see more than three cars on that stretch. It is going to be tough when I go home in 20 days and have to face the cold.

I can walk at 4 MPH all day on my treadmill and enjoy videos, but couldn't take 5 minutes on a stationary bike... boring... and a recumbent bike was only a little better than the regular. I forget that I have the incline on sometimes when I'm cooling down at slower paces after 50+ minutes. I've gone 4.8 trying to finish a series. :D
I've done all of my exercise and dumbbells on my weight seat and am going to start my 289th session in the last 25+ months. I can't wait to get to this point. It's easy to walk and watch videos with at least one 1-minute jog at 6MPH. My heart rate is higher after 20 or so real pushups.

I thought about having side view mirrors yesterday!
I actually have 3 bikes, the other two are hanging up in my garage. I may get them both out, get in some "bike testing" and end up selling a couple of them. My 3-speeds are very old, steel framed bikes, and the Physiofit's gear selectors are mounted on the frame----not the handle bars----and are very awkward to get to.

That ain't walking. that's jogging. Takes a lot more than bicycling to do that.

Looked like a dog that came after me about two weeks ago. Fortunately the dog tripped and rolled across the sidewalk in front of me and I was able to dodge it and keep going. I never saw it before and never since.

Dangerous is biking or running in bear and cougar country... and solo hiking... WITHOUT PROTECTION, or a PLAN to deal with large predators.
The bear coming up and sitting within about 10 feet of the photographer... crazy. That looked like an old bear that wasn't hungry or looking for a fight. :o

I was thinking the same, but doing that kind of stuff around Orlando is close to none existent. I’ve hiked some of the areas above Denver once, but only took a single stack 9mm. Was pretty scared the whole time of the possibilities. I couldn’t see doing any serious hiking or mountain biking in big cat/bear country with a concealed big bore though. So I’m relegated to the concrete jungle. -Sincerely, soft city guy

One big problem with Florida is no open carry. Here, in WV, open carry is getting more and more commonplace.
My biggest worry with hiking in the woods is Lyme Disease from ticks.

My biggest worry with hiking in the woods is Lyme Disease from ticks. That's what I worry about most...………………..friend and I went hiking on Friday. He said that he had already been picking ticks off 2 weeks ago. You really have to watch your pets up here. I hate using all of those chemicals on our dog, but I guess the alternative is worse. You can see how those repellents affect a dog's nervous system. We have just as many ticks in the woods by the city as we do up nort. Up nort I also have to keep alert for bears, and coyotes. We have lots of coyotes in our area and they have been known to take people's dogs on occasion. Coyotes are pretty much shoot on sight up nort…………...everybody hates them. I don't hate them, but I will protect my dog and or family. Otherwise, it was 60 degrees, partly sunny and some fresh air did me good. When I left the house it was 43 degrees. When I got to state hiking land by a friends place, 45 minutes later, it was 60. Being by the lake has advantages and disadvantages when it comes to weather.

I am the same with coyotes. Live and let live.
It's a gorgeous day here in WV but I am about to crawl under my dad's house to try and solder on some valves. WISH ME LUCK.
Tomorrow though, plan to haul the bike over to the ski condo for riding there.

I fear the TICK much more than the Virus. I hunt and scout all the time. Last year, even though I was soaked in Tick Repellent, I came home and the next day had a tick embedded in my neck. I went immediately to the ER. They had to cut it out with a scalpel. And because of the fear we have of Lyme Disease they gave me all the shots. Doctor told me, it was smart to come in right away. The window to stop the disease is about 24hrs. And this was in Nov. I have a friend that is now confined to a wheel chair and can barely talk from this disease.

You guys are so on point about the ticks. Took my son on a short hike when he was 7. At one point we stopped to rest and hydrate. Before we started to move again, I decided to have us each check each other for ticks. 3 between the two of us. Once we got back to the car, did another check, and we each had 1. Next day, found another one lodged in my sock. How in the heck? The poor deer, squirrels, etc out there must all be lyme diseased up! Chris Christophersen’s story is amazing! I wonder how many else suffered through history not knowing as he did.

I hike above Denver every weekend all year round. The open space trail I use is 15 minutes from my house. About 1200ft elevation gain. I've seen 3 mountain lions, seen tracks more times than I remember when hiking in the snow, most recently last weekend. I've smelled them a couple of times also. I think it was a tom that was upset, smelled like a litter box. I must have inadvertently gotten too close to his kill, even though I always hike on an existing trail.
I hike really early in the morning. So early it's still dark. Used to take the dog (German Shepard) but she has arthritis so bad now she can't handle the distance and the uphill. I have always carried when I hike. Usually my CW40 but I've also taken one of my 1911s on occasion.
There's been several stories lately about hikers and trail runners getting attacked by cats. So it's no joke either. Just gotta be aware.

Sorry to hear about your Shep. Man I know it hurts to watch her in pain. My best friend, a little dog I bought for my son when he was 9 years old recently came down with Sards (blindness). My gosh, it crushed me. My son is now 20 years old. (I grew up with hunting beagles and this was my first small house dog). But she is one smart, feisty little Devil. Still loves to be taken to the field where we have played for years and get a good run in. Talk about trust. I will make her sit and then walk 50 yds out and call her, and even blind will take off in a full gallop.
Sorry to get off track.

Great pic of your little buddy running in the snow! What a great pic to always remember him by!

This is who we walk with up nort.............................in the pitch black of night, she always lets us know when something is close by................deer, coyote, other dogs, etc...................she's a mix and has a VERY good nose from what I think may be a hound of some sort. She's also a tapper.................always taps you on the hand or leg when she wants to warn you or get you to pay attention.

We had some friends up last year......................................took them back in to the woods. One of them found a fresh scat pile.................I calmly told them that we should get back to the house. The friend that spotted the pile didn't recognize it, but I did and it was fresh. I didn't want to just yell BEAR...……………………………….it's the closest I've found one to the house. About 60 yds. away. I'm even more alert now than before. We don't ever feed animals, or leave garbage out, so the bear was probably just passing through...…….it wasn't berry time yet, but we have 5 different types of raspberries on the property. On high alert during season.

Good news and it may help you guys out too: I had to pick up a prescription today and while waiting for it to be filled, I drove over to the local mall. As expected, it was largely empty with most stores closed (which is a good thing right now). Mine was the only car I saw driving around. I think the mall parking lot is going to be a great place to ride one's bike. It's flat, little to no traffic, few parked cars to block one's vision, and the distance for one complete lap was exactly 1 mile. Finally, no one else was jogging or biking.
So keep in mind your local mall for a possible safer biking area.

Thanks, Greg. I'll give that a try. I thought my wife mentioned something about CBD for the dog, but she didn't follow thru with it. Since martial law has been declared (not really, but you guys know what I mean) I don't think pet stores are "essential businesses". Might just have to order it from Mr. Bezos.

Actually I think they are considered essential. I work part time and my wife works full time at Tractor Supply and we're open like normal, even getting hazard pay. Livestock and pets have to eat and need stuff too.
I'm wondering if that stuff would work on humans, I partake of a dog biscuit from time to time just to impress the chicks at work, although they usually aren't too impressed truth be told.

I think the pet store in that mall is open, but only for calls. The chalkboard outside stated to the effect "call us at the number below and we will bring it out to you."
