View Full Version : Thinking about the Ruger PC 9 Carbine

But only after this virus discombobulation and its gun/ammo panic buying dissipates. I am intrigued by this little gun as a possible HD piece to accompany my two SR9 pistols. Already have a total of six 17 round mags between the two handguns, and probably would order six more. Some 124 grain Gold Dots would make it a formidable threat stopper up to 100 yards, IMO.
Anyone have experience with these?

I have the original version, of the Police Carbine 9mm Parabellum. It's a solid weapon, heavy, strong.
Pros:
uses P89/P97 mags. Those are good mags, inexpensive.
solid weapon
accurate
reliable
Cons:
gritty trigger. I heard it can be corrrected.
reassembly is a pain
needs steel buttplate
needs threaded barrel
needs bayonet lug
reassembly could be easier
bolt release is odd

I got one and really like it. I have the 31 round mags as well as other Glock mags for it. It fits great in a Tennis Racket bag for low profile movement. I put the Trijicon green dot sight on it and a brass catcher bag.
I like the fact it is a takedown, I also added a flash suppressor considering it had threaded barrel.

Jeepster, I like when you post gun picts on the leather sofa, looks classy. I have a JRC 45acp that’s fun and inexpensive to shoot, dead nuts accurate, very quiet, reliable and did I say fun and cheap to shoot. It’s my favorite long gun inside 100 yards. That 230 grain bullet can ring the steel nicely. I added one of those doohickeys to the muzzle end.

I've been looking at the Ruger PC myself. I like the looks of it an I like better that it can take Glock mags which means 33 rounders! I'm kind of waiting for Ruger to introduce the 5.7x28 version, or maybe even a .22 TCM version!

I see my usual online sources have jacked up their PC9 prices by $100, and are out of stock. Am in no rush and will wait for the current panic to subside. Maybe next year.

Yup... Most online and local gun stores have raised prices. I was in the market for one of these and a Mossberg Shockwave. I finally got the extra money, and everyone jacked the prices by $100. I think I probably will just wait until prices go back down rather than over pay.

Love pistol caliber carbines. I shoot indoors and 5.56 is just no fun. I have an UZI carbine that I finally got around to making a SBR. Wish I wouldn't have waited so long, it's super cool. Small, robust, reliable, cheap magazines and super easy to hit with. You guys that can share magazines between carbine and pistol have it even better. I definitely think pistol caliber carbines have a place for defense in the home or in an urban environment. The 9mm picks up some juice running out of a longer barrel and it's easier to shoot without hearing protection if you must do so.

The Charger takedown model is going to sell a lot of units. Pistol caliber "pistols" (ATF rules are stupid) are HOT right now. There are the AR9 models but making them fold is an additional cost. These pistols with the Picatinny rail for mounting folding braces have changed the game.
I have been thinking about a "bag gun". My EDC is just large enough that my pockets are getting too full, so I want to get a bag, and if I'm going to carry a bag, why not a shoulder mountable firearm too? I figure the Charger takedown in 9mm would be a good candidate for that. Benefit of the Ruger is Glock magazine compatibility. I've heard the trigger is 10/22, so that opens up a whole bunch of options.
The B&T pistols are fantastic but too expensive. The CZ Scorpion is the market leader, with all sorts of cool accessories, but it's not cheap, especially the Micro. The Grand Power Stribog is a solid choice, but reports are the magazines are fragile.
A 10/22 Charger Takedown with a folding brace would fit in a messenger bag, and in the event of a mass shooting or societal dysfunction, having what is essentially a .22 SBR with an optic is a substantial force multiplier. I can reliably make 50 yard shots with a .22 rifle. I really can't guarantee that with my CM9. 50 yards shots are only in case of emergency, of course.

Got a notification from Grabagun today that the 9mm PC Carbine was back in stock (@ $15 price increase ) so I went ahead and ordered one. An hour later the site said “Out of Stock” again, so am glad I jumped. Already have six of the SR9 17 round magazines to go with it, not counting the four more that are with my two new SR9 pistols.
Now to look for a sling, a budget red dot and a carry case.
Not thrilled at the $530 price ($30 more than the pre-panic prices), but not as jacked up as most of the ARs. I just wanted one to plink with this summer and to possibly employ it as a home SD option. Plus, being a take down gun it will make a handy travel carbine.

Congrats Army on snagging that last one....I have had an eye on one for a while now, great concept in a take down, bug out rifle....I was hoping that Ruger would come out with an adapter so I could use M&P mags which I have a bunch of but Glock mags are available cheap and since you already have Ruger mags for it, makes it perfect....I have done a lot of research on the PC9 carbine and from everything I have read they are great little rifles and just keep shooting with very little maintenance and everybody seems to really like them....Hopefully this craziness will pass and ammo prices and availability will come back to normal so we can get back to the range again......Good luck with it and let us know how it shoots when you get a chance....

Picked up my little plinker Today. It seems like it will suffice as a social distancing device... Good out to 100 yards or so. Was supprised that it is a bit weighty at 6.8 lbs. Fit & finish appear to be very good.

Yes, I enjoy it a lot.
i want an M1 Carbine in .45ACP.
Yes; works great. 9mm Glock mags 33 round mag. folds nicely into soft brief case for road trips.
Green Laser under barrel & Red Dot side mount were easily added.
Red Dot mounted to side allows for use of aperture sight and for firearm to be completely folded.

I have thought about the Ruger PC. (Pre-Riot days). I can see many benefits to having a fast carbine for many reasons. However the only thing I hesitated on was the heavy weight. Ruger could have done so much better in this regard. I have a SR9C and about a dozen mags and this would work out in my favor. Why the weight? I have not shot a 9mm carbine, but have shot 9mm in a Midland shotgun 18"barrel with a Shortlane 8" adapter and there is virtually no recoil to speak of . That gun weighs 4 l/2 lbs. Not ruling out the Ruger in the Future. I think 40 cal would be my choice of . Why not give the carbine more power that is close to the 10mm with a longer barrel than a pistol. Just some thoughts.
Congrats to Army Brat. Hope you keep posting on range time.

I went lo-tech with my carbine. I had a HI-Point 9mm that was a victim of the robbery, so I replaced it with a 45 several years ago. I've only shot it at 25 and 50 yards, but with the red-dot, it does fine. It's reasonably accurate and has never failed to fire. It only has 10 round mags, but I'm good with that.
Armybrat
07-25-2021, 09:41 PM

07-27-2021, 11:39 AM
Oh, I guess I should have figured that out. I'm not positive because I'm not a High Point supporter, but I think the carbines share firing actions and parts with a pistol of the same caliber. I seem to remember that from the 9mm. If so, I suppose the carbine and pistol could use the same mags.

This was an original Ruger PCC 9 that I modified. It has a Sig Romeo 5 red dot, with a MWI hand guard. I didn't like the rear sight (it got in the way of the optic) so I made a plate to cover up where the rear sight used to be.
I tried using a flash suppressor but my groups suffered.
We have 3 other PCC's and this and a Glock Mech-Tech 9mm are the lightest (7.2 #)
We shoot them at a steel plate at 85 yds. from our deck. You can see the plate just at the edge of the tree line on the mowed path

Here's mine, I just put the forend on it a couple days ago. It weighs virtually nothing. At first I wasn't terribly impressed but it's growing on me rapidly. I don't plan to hang anything on it so didn't need Mlok or any of that. I like the look of JG's a lot.
Midwest has some nice ones but get pretty big bucks for them. This one was less than a 100, like 89 or something as I recall.

Does anyone know if Ruger still sells their take down 1022's with those bug out backs ? Years ago I found another source for those same backs on Amazon for half the price. They were labeled by another company which I believe were making them for Ruger.
Works great as a BUG for a Ruger PCC 9

I like that, no shortage of magazines. I don't have quite that many but plenty.

I went with the Glock mags only because I had access to them, friend I bought it from had a couple and it was set up for them. Having it the same as your pistol is a good choice. Very easy to swap to Glock if the need ever arises.
The Glock mags are every where and some very high capacity, I have a couple 33 rounders.
Ruger mags not so plentiful I don't think and don't know of any high caps but still using the same mags for both pistol and rifle makes a lot of sense to me.
You guys are terrible.
A bunch of avid enablers.
I love you all.
Saw this thread.
It reminded me of something I had seen and fondled awhile back and promptly forgot about. Mine should be at my LGS on Tuesday. Just completed the training online to keep the gov. happy. Just this representative picture is all I have so far. Other than the bill of course :)
I'm going to go with the glock mag setup. I'm going to pick up a couple of oem 17rd'ers but I already have a couple of Amend2 34rd'ers.

I think you'll like it a lot. Great little rifle. There's some accessories out there, but it's fine and fun right out of the box. I put a forend on mine that doesn't weigh anything, helped the balance a little bit but don't plan on much else. Mine had a red dot on it when I got it so I'm pretty set.
A couple cases of ammo would be kind of nice right about now.
I've been looking at muzzle brakes. Not so much for recoil as for persuasion purposes. But I'm torn because at 34.5" it's long enough already. Too bad I'm not one of those that has several thousands of ammo.
What kind of forend did you put on it Colonel? About the only thing I really feel compelled to do is to put some QD mounts on it. I have one on the forend of my 930 and they are the bees knees.
Bawanna
10-01-2021, 04:29 PM
I have the QD sling mounts. Mostly cause I hate slings, always in the way but very much needed to carry and helps in getting a solid rest too.
I'll have to look and see, I don't remember what brand my for end is, I know there are some that are very pricey but mine was not one of them, under a 100 as I recall.
I like the Midwest Industries kit but it's pricey. Truth be known unless we find ourselves in a shtf situation I'll probably never carry this. So I'll probably make due with the sling mounts it comes with, especially since I already have a sling to use on it.
Bawanna

Midwest was one of the pricey ones I really liked but refused to part with that much cash to get. I'll dig around and find which one I got.

This is the one I got. I almost sent it back, thought it was wrong but just a little tap and it popped into place. It's very snug and tight. Very comfy and does lighten up the front end. The Ruger is just a bit nose heavy and the forend does weigh quite a bit. This one weighs virtually nothing.
Ruger actually sold the PC9 with this type of forend, not sure whose it was or if Ruger made their own but I couldn't find a factory Ruger forend only.
Carbon Fiber. Cool. What did you do for a QD socket Colonel? I got the 19100 which has the pic rail on the bottom of it. Looks like I would lose that?
Bawanna
10-01-2021, 07:29 PM
Where did you find that 19100 number, I never could find it anywhere on the gun and I couldn't find the box. That's why I thought I might have ordered the wrong one.
Bawanna
10-01-2021, 07:33 PM
Mine came with a sling attachment at the very front end of the forend. Perfect for a quick detach and matches the rear in the buttstock. You can't see it in their pictures and I don't see it mentioned but it's there or at least mine is.
Here's the link to the Ruger page with the part no.
https://ruger.com/products/pcCarbine/specSheets/19100.html
Mine comes with a sling mount on front and rear. If I replace the fore end I would have to get one with a QD hole or buy an mlok attachment that had one in it. No biggie but after thinking about it today I realized that I probably won't be carrying it in a tactical situation (I'm not an operator, and don't want to be). So if I do replace the fore end either kind of QD hole or stud will work for me. I guess that makes me a donwannabee operator huh? :)
These are some of the QD attachments I was thinking of. The GGG is the type I have on my 930. One is with an mlock attachment. And the other will of course work with a pic hole. So depending on which fore end is chosen it might require one or none of these, and the swivel attachment that the gun comes with might not fit the bill.
Bawanna
10-01-2021, 10:18 PM
You missed my sentence up above. My forend came with the pin to attach your sling, just like on the rear. No rail or anything needed. Just a QD attachment on your sling.
It's pretty slick.
Edit to add, maybe your thinking of the push button attachment type. In which case you'd have to get an adaptor. Personally I'd go with the pin type. Not sure what you'll do on the rear in that case either since there's no provision for that on the buttstock.
Midwest makes a spacer that has one on each side of it. I did miss your sentence, sorry.
My new critter control gun. Cleaned the factory lube/preservative off, switched the magwell to the Glock one, and temporarily mounted my new, and first for me, red dot. Switched the mag release and charging handle around for my lefty use.
I'm thinking of using my 9mm laser bore sighting cartridge to zero the dot. That should work shouldn't it?
JohnR
10-21-2021, 11:45 AM
That should get you close enough to fine tune it at the range.
Bawanna
10-21-2021, 12:05 PM
Mine charging handle and mag release were set up left, I'm right but I found that I liked the charging handle on the left side anyhow. Did you find it comfy with all them spacers in the buttstock. Most of mine were removed as the friend I bought it from is about the same size as me. I prefer a shorter stock anyhow. I'm thinking you must be a pretty big guy.
If we ever cross each other I'd best bring my lunch and maybe get a short nap in before hand.
Well, I'm 6'1". My legs are shortish and my upper body and arms are longish. I have to buy Tall shirts and jackets to fit me right. I've been maintaining my weight at right around 215 so it might only be a light snack, and no nap required :)
I see the charging handle on both sides for either left or right handed shooters on youtube. To me it just feels right on the left side. I switched the mag release over to the right side which put them both on the opposite sides they came on. I figured Ruger probably sets them up to be "natural" for righties. I've only owned one true left-handed model rifle and that was my .06. The bolt was on the left and of course ejection took place there too. So having the charging handle on the left should be the same? Probably a matter of preference as much as anything. Though I do wish the ejection was on the left.
The only videos (all of them), on youtube about zeroing a red dot was for AR's. Given the big difference of range and especially trajectory for those calibers and a 9mm I'm just going to try and zero it for about 40 yards or so. I don't think my eyes are much better than that especially with no magnification.
Bawanna
10-21-2021, 03:02 PM
I better not skip the nap, I could pull 5'6'' if I stretch my neck, had to do that when I applied at State Patrol in an earlier life, required 5'6''. Measuring dude says stretch out and I made it. That plus I sit a lot so probably only about 4' on a good day but damn I'm wiry. Fat only a few pounds less than you but wiry.
A lot of right hand target shooter like left hand bolts so they can stay married up to the stock and trigger. A guy over at the lake showed me his long range rifle, forget the caliber but it was right hand bolt, left hand eject. He said that way they eject onto the bench and the brass don't get dirty?????
I sighted my PC9 in at aprox 50 so I think we're on the same track there. Mine is very accurate, quite pleased in that respect.
I walked off 45 yards in my yard today and inserted my bore sighting cartridge. I "think" I have it where it needs to be but the red dot is so much brighter than the laser, even at it's lowest setting that I'm not sure. If I aim for a coyote's head and hit it in the butt I guess that will prompt him to leave my yard and dogs alone, but I don't like the idea of just wounding an animal. I think I'm going to try and see if I can scare anyone up at the rifle range that's pretty close to me. They just don't seem to be open often, or regularly and there's no contact info on the gate. I would really like to have something as close to me as it is, about 4 miles, as opposed to the pistol range that's 20+ miles away and costs me $175 a year.

That is a Sig Romeo green dot on mine. Just bought it because it was cheap ($100). Don’t know the first thing about using one. The riser sure makes it look awkward.
Bawanna
10-22-2021, 02:17 PM
The Sig Romeo is a decent unit for the price, lots of them out there.
Seems like there should be a mount where you don't need that riser, get down closer to the bore. I'll go look at mine and see, it's not a Sig Romeo but same concept.
I can co-witness through the red dot to my iron sights with it mounted without a riser. But it would handy to have a riser on it so that I could swap it out between the carbine and my .22. Don't think I will though because of the addt'l height it adds.

I drove by that local rifle range today and confirmed the hours and days they're supposed to be open. I'll be going over there next week to see if it's suitable for pistol shooting, and conducive to dry if not warm practicing. I'm hopeful.
