So gb6491 linked me an active Gunbroker listing for a first week production of the Kahr K9......well....I bid! I had never bid on anything linked on a forum before. I won!

Got it for min. bid of $500.00....I had some "buyer's remorse" since I was like "why buy that now?"

I picked it up today......

Not wanting to stay in the store (tiny store, 7 people in there, no masks (except me with mine)) so I got out of there as fast as possible. I never fail to proofread any form but this time, no way! Scribbled out the blanks, turned that in, handed over the transfer fee, jetted. Thankfully WV has no background check if you have a CCW, even less time in there. I was originally going to do the 4473 outside on the back of the truck but it was on and off raining.....decided to go inside.

Just checked he weapon....

Looks like shipped with wrong magazine as it won't engage the mag button......but......

SMOOTH AS GLASS ACTION. Better than my 2nd year production Kahr, the P9, and CW 45.

The wood grips are amazing. Even the trigger's edges feel smoother than my other K9.

The sights seem "better" somehow.

I swear I might end up carrying this thing! It's like holding something you don't want to put down!

Thank you so much for linking me the ad....

Here is the ad again so you guys can view the pics.

Definitely not the correct magazine, says Firestar on it in the ad.

Cool, man. So "first week"... as in, like, the actual first week these things were being made? That's pretty cool. Is there a way to tell the production year, based on the serial number?

Either way, I like the hint of patina on the high points. Looks rugged and like it means business. Congrats.

Serial number is "18."

I'll email Kahr and see if they can send me some info on it.....something in print would be nice.

No "patina"...looks to be a parkerized finish with some of it worn off at front where slide reciprocates. Gun came from an estate in PA. Out of that estate I bought four WW2 bayonets with scabbards...including a nice J ap model with deteriorated leather frog. Seller didn't mention the leather falling apart though....so the review will reflect that. Still, the collector had good tastes.

Mag is a "Firestar" and locks the slide back but will not stay in gun without being held in. Won't drop free either but a K9 mag works fine.

Somewhere out there is a proud new owner of a Star Firestar M43 wondering why it shipped with a Kahr mag.

Nice find. Look like new grips. I personally like the smooth grips. Something classic about them.

Enjoy.

I've never seen a parkerized finish on a Kahr. Here's my early (not as early as yours) black carbon steel K9 with it's smooth grips.

Nice find Turtles, always cool to find something that has historic meaning of some sort. And when it's a working gun that likely needs nothing more than a new mag, it's even nicer.

Great find. Especially in comparison to this listing:
https://www.gunbroker.com/item/868746509 , another early production K9. This listing includes a email from Kahr giving more details about the serial number. It should allow you to pin your's down exactly. Scroll through the pics in the listing to see a picture of the email.

I appreciate it but it was that "gb####" guy that found it. I had started a thread with a link to a similar (but few numbers off) 1st year production K9 with a price tag 3X what I got mine for. He replied with a link to what I ended up buying.

I think it's parkerizing....may not be....I'll ask Kahr. It's a sweet handgun for sure though....

Hard to say about the missing/mismatched mag. Could be older guy forgot where he put it and his heirs put whatever would fit in there. I bought an all matching Swiss 96/11 that was missing the mag. I asked the pawnbroker but he wouldn't give out the seller's info.....I would have paid him for his trouble if he could find it but the pawnbroker has his rules for a reason I guess.

Thanks for the pic of the early K9! I swear I think this #18 is lighter than my 2nd year production example!

That gb#### guy is what we call an enabler. He enables us to fix the issues we have with our Kahrs.

Generally an "enabler" is a bad thing.......but not this time. :D

Well he's sure enabled me more than a few times, saved my butt more than a few times too.

That finish might be Black T, Kahr in the early days used them, not sure the dates or if it was in the beginning but it's a good solid finish.

That was the ad that started it all. (That's at least the second time that gun has been listed on Gunbroker). I saw it the first time, got a laugh out of it, started a thread on here about it. gb#### replied with a link to what I bought. I figured 1/3 the price was decent for such an early weapon. Mine came with box and documents but no Kahr mag, just one Firestar mag. I'll get new mags for it.

I am just dying to fondle it more but I'm still a bit paranoid. A clerk at the gun store handled it and given their complete lack of virus prevention I don't trust where his hands have been. I don't want to wipe it down with a bleach wipe so it's in my "quarantine box" by the door. It will stay there for 3 days total.

I know Foxnews and Ben Shapiro reported "it doesn't transfer from surfaces easily" but I have an elderly dad to take care of. It will remain there its allotted time before being handled again.

If it's matte but smooth, or satin and smooth it could be Roguard by Robar. That's the finish that's on my 2000 Elite MK9

New info....I looked in the K9's case and oh boy! No "official documents" such as we are used to but I found something a lot more interesting. Kahr had supplied a letter to a dealer, inviting him to Shot Show, and apologizing for only including a paper print out of the manual. Also, there is a carbon (transfer through) copy of the buyer's original forms filled out in Maryland for purchase, including personal details like address and address of gun store along with a questionnaire similar to a Form 4473.

I may type up letters to both addresses and see if I can get any further info on the purchase. I've never received this sort of info with a weapon before. Maybe I can find out what happened to the mags! LOL

Similar thing happened to me a few years ago. I bought a Walther TPH listed on Gun Broker that was shipped with the original sales receipts and paperwork from the local sheriff department. The original buyer was the sheriff himself. This paperwork contained the gun shop info, buyer's name, address and social security number. Too much information IMHO. I believe he had passed away and his collection was sold.

The gun and spare mag were still wrapped in their shipping wrappers and looked as if they'd never been opened. The gun was perfect. A very lucky find on my part. Based on the original cost, the purchase was a good investment on their part. Time will tell for my investment.

In college I came across a student form with social security number on it. I didn't know the young lady personally but to protect her I shredded the form and emailed her to tell her about that. Later we met in person and she thanked me.

That is a sweet handgun and story.

It's possible that you have the e-nickel finish there. That was an option in the first year (only, I think). Mine looked like that until I polished it with Flitz. Then it looked a lot better. Shiny, but not garishly so.

Hmm.....I'll ask Kahr at some point. I don't like to modify anything in ways that cannot be easily reversed.

Apologies. Looking at it on a better screen, I don't think it's e-nickel. AFAIK, they only did that the first year, and the lettering on the left side of the frame was done differently then, as was the serial #.
