View Full Version : What is wrong with me?

I am 75 in good health and still a RSO/instructor at an indoor range. I have been in and out of the 1911 platform at least five times with guns from Colt, Clark, Kimber, Ed Brown, and a custom made from Wilson parts from a local gunsmith and each time I sell my last one I tell myself good, they are a PIA to clean properly, don't hold enough ammunition, I need to consolidate calibers, are too heavy to carry, and my heirs will not take care of the one I leave them when they push me out on a ice flow.
That said, after three years without one and only one other 45acp (XDm) in the safe, I find my LGS has a Wilson Stealth
45 acp in perfect condition for just about half of its nearly $4000 initial cost. This thing has been gnawing at me and I am praying someone else picks it up before I give in to my wants. I am checking their website hourly. I have considered which guns in my safe would make the price of this thing somewhat justifiable, I have gone into my gun wallet stash and counted and re-counted its contents. I know I have no use for it and I am considering just wearing a brick on my hip next shift at the range just to reinforce my carry weight argument but....... damn this thing is a thing of beauty.
Am I sick or just a gun nut?

This too shall pass!
I gave up 1911s because I’m one of the few, I guess, who can’t shoot ‘em worth a darn. I should have kept the Colt Officer, but I kept the AO GI model.

I've got a colt gold cup that i never carry and seldom shoot. Just haven't let go of it though.

If you can afford it, buy it. Life is too short not to jump on a deal. That’s what I tell myself anyway.

Please consider the following.....
...written a little tongue in cheek....
.... a very little;)...:
"they are a PIA to clean properly" - IMO, not any more so than many other guns. Kahrs with non captive recoil springs for example.
"don't hold enough ammunition" - I may lead a sheltered life, but being a .45ACP fan, I've always figured that if 8 rounds of it wasn't enough then my tactics sucked.
"I need to consolidate calibers" - When I do that .45ACP is a keeper.
"are too heavy to carry" - Suspenders are your friend....also tanker holsters and sling packs.
" my heirs will not take care of the one I leave them when they push me out on a ice flow." - Didn't Norse warriors take their weapons with them on that last ride? That's my plan anyway.
"Am I sick or just a gun nut?" - I don't think you are sick:w00t:
Bawanna has a Wilson. The cool factor is strong in that one.

Everyone needs at least one 1911.
And the Wilson sounds dreamy.
I say grab it, keep it and caress it often.

Thats reason enough right there. Plus if anyone at your home complains then blame it on Bawanna. He’s on vacation anyway so he can’t say he said not to get it.

I agree with Barth, everybody needs at least one 1911....I found a Beautiful Colt Officers model and even though it's a base model, no extended beaver tail or oversize thumb safety that beautiful deep Colt Blue shine caught my eye and I couldn't resist....I can shoot it ok but learn new cuss words every time I have to clean it, I never grew up shooting 1911 pistols and they seem to come apart bass ackwards to all my other semi auto pistols but I will never trade it because it's beautiful....
Now a Wilson 1911 would be a real work of art so if money isn't an issue I would grab that thing and never let go and forget about passing it down, it should go in the box with you when it's time to cross the river because you never know who you might run into on the other side.....
For some strange reason I feel protected with 9rds of .45acp on my hip. But even if I never carried one, they are beautiful pistols and Wilson makes some of the most handsome. On days when I'm stuck at home I have been known to keep a favorite gun, of various makes and models, right next to me just to look at and caress. And they're sometimes not even loaded.
If you can afford it, buy it. You're not going to be worrying over it on the ice flow, I can almost guarantee you that. In the meantime, because you recognize a good deal when you see it, and it's beautiful, those are two of the three reasons why you should pick it up. And finally, what's the wife think?

I just dropped $1300 on a rare muzzleloader I doubt I'll ever hunt with. No more guns for a while here! Glad I got it though, she is gorgeous and only 500 exist world-wide.
I bought suspenders, because I want to get more use out of my work pants and I've lost so much weight they won't remotely fit.
I'll test these out next week when I mow for a friend in the ghetto and I carry my Kahr CW 45 and two 8 round 1911 mags when I do.
So get what you want, put on the suspenders, and go about your merry way!
I think a 1911 says something about the person.....not sure what.....but those that carry a 1911 seem to be a special breed.

My theory to your question "what does the wife think? " my philosophy on that is,
always own enough guns so if one is added to or subtracted from the collection, it will go unnoticed by one's spouse.

The same thing keeps happening to me. I have been fighting back not buying another S&W E series round butt Commander size 1911. I have had 2 different ones over the years and sold them only to kinda want one again. If you figure it out....let me know. I have had Ruger's Para's Taurus and just about every other make! Never a Colt yet....

I used to think that till I found my Traiter German Shepard use to rat me out EVERY TIME. Kodi would sit and stare at anything new that came into the house [SERIOUSLY]. A new gun in safe and she sat in front of safe and stared at it. It didn't matter what it was, she TOLD ALL because something new was THERE.
That is too funny :)

I have two, the PC and the 2-tone Sc, no desire to sell either. Some guys just buy and sell their stuff while others hold on.

Yeah, they have a way of wrapping themselves around our hearts.
Here's one of our current babies, who's three now.We also have a 7 month old black and tan who doesn't stop at resting her front end on the ottoman, she gets right up on it whenever she likes. And proceeds to look out over her subjects. Fortunately neither seems interested in new things in the house. Unless they're alive.

I think taking guns with you in the box is a shame. Leave them behind for someone else to love. If you don't want them sold, make a list of guns matched up to friends.

So...did you buy it yet? If not, where is it located?
I’ve struggled with the same pains as you have. I agree with Greg’s reply, individually addressing each concern, as they are pretty close to how I rationalize things. I’ve come to the conclusion that:
1. I shoot 1911’s better than the highest end double action or polymer gun ever
2. There’s no cooler looking gun than certain 1911’s
3. There’s no polymer gun I’ve ever shot that is as buttery smooth as the recoil absorbing 1911 with it’s additional weight
4. I am not designed to carry one. Although they are my favorite pistol design on earth, I can’t get past the weight, print, capacity and extra step of switching off a safety. After #4 you’d wonder why I would have them, which all comes down to range time. They are a joy at the range. And looks. Did I mention how cool they are?

Sorry Jeep, I didn't realize Kodi had passed, she was a very pretty Shepherd and I suspect a great pal....They really do become part of the family and are here for such a short time....The last dog we had was a Black Lab-Chow mix we got from the pound we named Bo and he was the best dog ever, just a big furball of love who was so happy to have a home and family but unfortunately on July 13 2006 our house burned mostly to the ground from an electrical problem but everyone got out safely except for Bo who hid under a bed and died from smoke inhalation.....After the fire was out the firemen were so incredible because it wasn't safe to go back into the house but they did anyway and they brought him out to us in a blanket.....After losing our house and almost everything we owned that awful day the hardest thing I ever had to do was bury that dog.......That was 14 years ago and I still miss that stupid dog and we have never had another pet since.....Maybe it's time

No, I have not taken the plunge, probably because I have absolutely no use for the darn thing. (I know that is no excuse but I am getting wiser as I get older) This has been one of my more difficult decisions. I think that gun is under priced and will always be worth the asking price based on the fact new it would be about $4000 with tax at my LGS.
As I said, I have owned five 1911's and all were high end guns and I sold all of them so I have to remind myself why did I do that?
I hope you can get to the gun through this link without opening an account but please go for it. I suggest they will accept a slightly lower offer and they are a very high class LGS that I have done business with for years.

Sad days losing a pet. Kodi lived a full life and made it to 14. She was a small girl [70 lbs] with attitude from Germany. My wife did adopt another after Kodi passed from local shelter that was a BIG BOY named Bosco, he was 12 and needed a home, he was a 120 lbs and very weak. After getting him on good food for a week he ended up running around and being awesome.
I have had Shepards all my life and they are to smart.....get's them into mischief. My current Shepard Sadi, was caught in the act of letting our other dogs out the through the garage door.
I happened to see her from front, opening the garage door with her mouth on knob, turning it, throwing her paw into opening and holding door open to let other dogs out!
She was tough on door knobs! Well I guess I rambled long enough....here are some pictures.

One wouldn’t want the teeth that crushed the doorknob to get your arm. Beautiful dogs. I had a German Shepherd growing up. Great dog.
Had a Lab/husky mix up until 2 years ago. Super loving dog. She made it 12 years. It was fun watching her stalk a squirrel. If the squirrel wasn’t on it’s A-game it didn’t stand a chance. And she hated fire ants. If a small mound started she would tear into it till they moved. Never had an ant problem in the back yard when she was alive.

Those Shepard's are awfully nosy in general. Ours always knows when there is something new. Goes right to it immediately and checks it out. This is Maggie. She's about 6 yrs. old. She was a rescue and in rough shape. She's originally from Alabama, where they apparently chased her around for a while. We think she's mixed with some type of hound. Kind hearted people from the Cheesehead State drive down south on a daily basis to rescue dogs who's futures are bleak at best. Down south, they have never heard of no kill shelters. It took my wife and myself a good year to get her back to fighting shape, physically and dog emotionally. Now, she's too smart for her own good. A great dog to human communicator. Only warning barks when something different is around. She has never once had any type of accident in the house. She's a hand or leg tapper, to let you know something is up. She has turned out to be the best dog. My wife thinks it's strange that she looks up a lot. At birds or jets or whatever. We had a Lab from really good bloodlines that rarely looked up................................. Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack the OP's post. Rescues and Shepard's are 2 of my many weaknesses.

Yes they do look up a lot. Here Sadie was looking up at a FULL MOON.
Before this black GSD we had a male that was also all black. We had him from a pup until he was six, before he died. He had internal problems with led to us bringing him in for emergency surgery a year before he died. They removed about 10" of his intestines to save his life. A year later the same issue developed except this time it also caused other non-repairable issues with other organs and we had to put him down. He was our first shepherd and I've told people countless times that he was the first dog I'd ever had who made me think I was talking to another human when looking into his eyes. Great dog, and we miss him to this day.
Our Dear departed Knightly
And below that our big girl
And below her our newest girl, taken when she was a month old, six months ago. While my wife has tons of pictures I'm not as good as keeping current ones on hand.
