View Full Version : New K9, odd question to ask y’all - Update: going back to Kahr, see comment

Hey folks, got my K9. Happy, slide to frame fit isn’t the tightest and rattles without a loaded mag but it is what it is. Mostly side to side at the muzzle
So here’s my question: on the top of my slide, there’s a tiny ball of metal. It’s not an indent, it’s a little ball of metal near the rear sight that you can see and feel. I tried scratching it with fingernails, tried wiping it, nothing. It’s exactly like a ball of solder/spatter got on the slide. Recommendations? Of course I don’t want to use metal to scratch it off and scratch the slide but I’m at a loss right now!
I’ll try to post a pic here soon but it’s what it sounds like, a ball of metal near the rear sight. It’s difficult because it’s small to show up on camera but easily seen and felt by eye.
last thing, any mag I have with the extended plastic baseplate (the big plastic extension, not the stock 7 rd K9 extension) doesn’t seat and if it does, I have to press it in the mag well fairly hard. With the slide back, it slides right in but when it’s forward, the extended 8 mag barely goes in if at all
here’s some pics. Again, small but super noticeable as it’s metal: https://ibb.co/DYqXLbH

zit.
Probably an illusion, but is the rear sight drifted way left?

I checked, just an illusion, it looks like it in the pic. It might be off by the absolute slightest hair, I’m talking 1/128 of an inch but I could be just seeing things
any way to get rid of this “zit”?

Looks like a tiny flaw. You can ignore it or knock it down I guess. As one who owns a flawed, (blemished), K9, don't let it bother you... life's too short.

no you’re right, it’s so tiny, the only reason I noticed is because, well, I’m me and it’s a new gun lol. gives it character

That's Kahr's holster retention option. You didn't have to pay more for that?
How's the trigger.

Looks like a blemish. If it bothers you, you can try contacting Kahr's warranty department. It might not be worth it, IMO, but I get wanting better QC from manufacturers.
My 20 year old K9's slide also wiggles when unloaded (bought new, still shoot it and carry it on occasion). It hasn't made a difference in the accuracy or function that I noticed... it might even be better for reliability, I don't know. I think my newer T40 also has some wiggle. It shouldn't make a difference.
If it makes you feel any better, all of my plastic firearms (HK, S&W, FN, Kahr) and some of my steel firearms (S&W, Kimber, Kahr) have a little wiggle in them, too. The only one that doesn't is my M9. I have had no issues with accuracy or reliability with any of them.

jk, or poor attempt at jk.
I think you might let Kahr Quality know, as a favor. Too bad when the customer has to be the final inspector.
I love a good Kahr trigger!

Update to everyone: the gun is going back to Kahr, they’re sending me a shipping label. The back slide plate is unbelievably dented/scratched, there’s a big ol scratch across the K9 logo, the metal ball, and pronounced scratches in the rear slide channel/dovetail with indents/scratches on the rear sights.
I’ll post some pics when I’m home but QC was definitely not a priority for this particular gun! Lol. I’ll have to wait another month (or more) for the gun to get back but hey, at least it’s fixed. Kahrs customer service was great, big thanks to Mark in the technical service department
pics, not the best but they were taken quickly: https://ibb.co/0BHJPK0

That looks like they put it together from parts that fell on the floor. But they're not blemished enough to make me send it back. Send it for the feeding issue. All their 9mm mags should work in it.

that’s what I’m saying.... not what I expected from any new gun at all. I have more pics of the issues but can’t fit them here.
because it’s a new gun, I’m gonna send it back. How they handle this will determine if I continue to shop Kahr. The complete lack of QC is NOT what I expected, inexcusable that it left the factory like that. Now the wait begins, just another 5 weeks. Oh boy!
I’ve had guns new a 5th of the price with better QC

You must have excellent eye sight. Or perhaps it's worse in real than in photo's. Don't see enough to set it aside as a blem myself.
But I'm confident Kahr will take care of it. Quality Control across the board in all products is poor in modern times. We live in an age of junk. Sad but true.

I’m legally blind without contacts/glasses ;) lol but yeah in person the imperfections are bad, I mean they’re an eyesore. I wish I could convey it through a pic but older iPhones and bad lighting can only show so much

Heck - mine all end up looking like that or worse. ;)
I've ditched all the plastic mag bases and replaced them with metal. Would have been the first thing I would've done, and it may likely have cured the mag seating problem. I'd never send a gun back before checking it all for function after that little improvement. Then if it shoots great, I'd ignore the harmless blemishes.

Mine do as well, I couldn’t link more than one image but there’s a total of 6 or so areas with either denting or scratches. On a new gun that I paid a good chunk of money for, I just can’t except that, especially with something as beautiful as the K9. I wanted to ignore it but couldn’t with that many issues right out of the box.
also, I only have one metal baseplate, the flat one. I like the slight pinky extension on the 7rd mag (which works fine) but the 8rd just won’t seat whatsoever with the long, wraparound extension. Won’t seat if the same long, wraparound extension is on a 7 or 8 rd mag.
are there other metal base plates besides the flat one?

I have 9 magazines of various capacities, some with plastic base plates, some metal. Occasionally the last round won't feed. All the mag springs are installed the right way. Sometimes it's the 2nd round that won't feed.

The only metal bases I have found other than the flat Kahr bases were +1 extensions from Lakeline. I haven't tried them.
All of my Kahrs and Kahr mags have been 100% reliable with in spec ammo - with one exception. On one of my 24 year old mags, the plastic base broke off and dumped all the rounds while in the holster. I know it was probably due to age, but - no more plastic bases for me, except the 8-round mag that I only use for range work. I wish NDZ would make some of their great aluminum bases for the Kahrs. Maybe if we all pester them?

Id definitely give them a call. The K9s have lifetime warranties so I personally would. If I pay for gun that has a good track record, I expect it to work if I’m to trust it to defend my life

Like JohnR said size is everything, a CW or P size pistol will require a belt holster of some kind....I personally pocket carry so PM9 size is perfect for me and I am lucky to have one that shoots good and is reliable and if for some reason it's not available I have a Smith J frame snubby that will do the job....I love the small Kahr pistols which is their bread and butter product but if I were to be in the market for a small holster size CCW pistol I would look at either the Springfield Hellcat or a Sig 365 XL because Kahr for some reason hasn't kept up to the market demand for high capacity double stack CCW pistol and there are much better choices available in that size pistol, why carry 7 or 8 when you can carry 13 + 1 in the same size gun .....We have all hoped Kahr would step up to a double stack 9mm pistol to compete but so far they have not so for now we wait.....

Has anyone used the Wolf Magazine springs? I have about a dozen mags of 380 and 9mm. I am setting up some more just for carry. I will be using the Lakeline 6 a 7 extensions. May also get the Lakeline extension for the 8 round with a sleeve plus all will have the metal followers.

From GETSOME "I personally pocket carry so PM9 size is perfect for me and I am lucky to have one that shoots good and is reliable "
All most all of the comments I have read about the CM9s nd PM9s have been about how well they shoot and how reliable they are. It sounds like you were typical of the small 9 owners, not lucky. The small 380s are a different story but I have a CW380 and 2 P380s (gave one to my GF) and they all are reliable and shoot great. Maybe I was lucky with them, but having my PM9 reliable and shoot great was no surprise to me.

My MK40 Elite was incredibly tight NIB.
Had a hard time just disassembling it to oil before I shot it.
First 200 FMJs FTF bad :(
I was disappointed, but decided to rinse and repeat.
So I disassembled (still tight as a drum), oiled and cranked out a second 200.
This time things got progressively better.
And smoothed out nicely near the end.
Then 50 rounds of 180 Ranger Ts.
Followed by mags of various JHPs 135 to 180 gr with no issues at all.
Accuracy wise my particular gun prefers heavy for caliber 180 gr.
But it will eat anything I feed it like candy
It's a breeze to break down now.
There's a little movement with the slide.
But I sure wouldn't call it loose...

So now it's worn in. At what point does it become worn out? If you refurb a worn out Kahr do you have to wear it back in?

I think Jocko that put a ridiculous round count through a Kahr (PM9 if memory serves).
Don't think you can afford to shoot out a Kahr.
I'm not sure what you mean by refurb?
New springs might take a break in with some full power ammo.
Before going to some light powder puff 9mm.

For the shooter? Yes.
For really strong new recoil springs? Not so much - LOL!
But you already knew that :)
Barth

Replaceing all the worn-in worn-out parts with new parts.
Depends on what parts you're replacing?
Generally I think it's the slide and frame fit, when new, that may need breaking in.
Maybe others can add some more specific information.
Recommend replacement of what you need.
Then shoot the gun and see what happens :)
You are almost certainly replacing the recoil spring.
So full power 125/147 gr 9mm to start with would be preferred.
Good Luck with your Kahr

Agreed, so here’s what I did. I knew the K9 was going to be too nice/expensive for me to comfortably carry it. I’ll use my K9 as a range/night stand gun, I just couldn’t bring myself to scratch it at all lol!
Was looking at the CW9 for a belt gun but when I saw a Sig P365 for $120 more, I had to buy it. Came out to $522 shipped, will use the P365 as a belt gun and the PM9 as a pocket gun.
The PM9 is already pushing the line of what is too big for pocket carry, especially with the weight. 20 ounces is by far the most I’d want to carry in the pocket. With the 365 being 4 ounces heavier loaded, that 4 ounces makes a difference in the pocket. Still being lighter, smaller, and thinner, I’ll keep the PM9 for the pocket (never getting rid of it) and the 365 for the belt.
Shipped out today, should be here early next week. I’m still looking for a CW9, I just love me some Kahrs, but I know they can go for less than the $405 I saw it for so I’ll wait, hopefully find one in the $3-$325 range

Sounds like a plan!
You will need one more gun, a high dollar 45, maybe an Ed Brown, Les Baer, something like that. This will be your barbeque gun, the gun you open carry to family picnics, Trump rallys, etc.
That will complete your gun wardrobe.

Man that’s my dream! My K9 is definitely going to be my “special event” gun. When I’m wearing something nice and a nice stainless on the hip even further accentuates the outfit lol. Honestly, a K9/MK9 would be an awesome tuxedo gun. A good tuckable IWB holster or even better, an OWB under the jacket!
No bull, I think you just helped me find my niche for my K9. When I’m wearing sports coats, nice events, etc. It’s not too often but it’ll be perfect for that. How cool would you feel in a nice suit with a K9 OWB just barely covered under the jacket 😎
