Greetings Patriots!
Last Saturday Mrs. BassCliff took her brand new Kahr CW9 to the range for a training session with our instructor. We were learning to draw from holsters and win in a close quarters gun fight. It was a ton of fun! At one point during all the action my wife noticed something different about her gun. It turns out the front site was missing. I don't know if it just came loose and thrown by the recoil or if it was broken off by the holster. We looked but could not find it in the dirt. Here's the pulchritudinous Mrs. BassCliff thoroughly enjoying her new CW9 despite the missing front sight.

It broke off cleanly. When cleaning the gun later I removed the last bits of plastic under the slide. I learned that to remove these sight you just break them off anyway. Installation uses Locktite and a tool to spread the end of the posts when you reinstall.

I called Kahr tech support yesterday and spoke to a very pleasant young lady, Julia, who was ever so helpful. No questions asked she offered to send a new stock front sight right away. As wonderful as that was, I also asked her about an upgraded front sight, possibly trijicon. She said that they no longer offer the trijicon sights for the CW series but the fiber optic front sight was still available. I asked if she would send the front sight along and I'd be happy to purchase the upgraded fiber optic sight. (That way I'll have a spare if something breaks again.) Julia, bless her heart, said to go ahead and order the new sight, put a note on the order to her attention, and she would ship them both together with no shipping costs to me since she was sending the replacement stock sight under warranty. I thought that was really outstanding. Kudos to Kahr service! :D
Do you guys post range reports on the forum somewhere? Do you like sharing the fun like that? Just curious.

BassCliff,
That's an excellent photo of your Missus, thanks for sharing it:)
I think you did good upgrading the CW9's front sight. The plastic is long gone from CW9.
I don't have any range photos of my sweetie, but here's a video of her shooting a PMR30 (otherwise she prefers her Colt Mustang XSP):

Thank you for the warm welcome. Please call me Cliff. Yes, I'm looking forward to hearing how much Mrs. BassCliff enjoys her new front sight. We'll also practice with her holster more so the new sight doesn't get broken. I'm hoping the fiber optic sight is not plastic. I imagine I'll have to replace the fiber cable itself periodically. Dang, I don't think I have a butane lighter.
Hey! That seems like a big gun for such a petite gal, but she handles it well. OH, I see! She must've been shooting the .22 magnums. There's lots of BANG! there. ;) My youngest daughter will be getting a combo .22LR/.22Mag revolver as a late Christmas present, a Heritage Rough Rider. She's shot Buckmarks for training but I figured for "her" first gun we'd go with the single action revolver.
Where do you guys post your range reports around here?
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

Lovely wife, lucky guy. My wife of 53 years doesn't like guns and has never fired one.
Oh well, at least she tolerates my hobby. She didn’t even mind when I took our visiting English lady friend to the local range.

My wife of 44 years doesn't care for guns or the shooting sports much either....Last year before the China virus happened we went as a family to the local range on the weekend so my oldest son could shoot and sight in his AR 15 and I brought a bunch of target pistols to shoot and when my wife's turn to shoot came up I gave her my Smith 586 revolver loaded with .38 powder puff loads to see what she could do thinking, this is going to be funny, well it wasn't funny when she started drilling the target at 20 foot or so.....I decided right then and there to double down on securing that gun thinking maybe just in case I should happen to come in late some night with no excuse I might be safer.....Lesson here fellows is, maybe it's not a really good idea to teach them to shoot, if you know what I mean....

What holster is that she’s wearing? I like the inside belt - outside waistband idea but never have been able to get it to work for me.
Same exact thing happened to me with my brand new CW9 the first time shooting it. It wasn’t a holster problem. The front sight just flew off from recoil shooting the second magazine. Kahr sent a replacement right out and I epoxied it on and no more problems. Seems like a common problem with them. Should have asked for an upgrade. :D

Hi,

I got us a couple of Alien Gear holsters to start with. Hers is IWB (Cloak Tuck) and mine is OWB (Cloak Belt). We'll use them as long as we like them. I'm thinking of getting an IWB if I get my CCW. We've just been practicing with them at the range since neither one of us can carry legally yet.
This is mine:

It's taken a little longer than I expected to receive the replacement. Both the upgraded sight and the replacement should be here Wednesday. I have some red Permatex ready to make sure the new sight stays put. I hope Mrs. BassCliff likes the fiber optic sight.

Thank you! Mrs. BassCliff just surprised me one day and said, "The world is getting too crazy. I'd like to get a gun and learn how to defend our home." I started buying pistols two weeks later. Now all three of us have a pistol, myself, wife, daughter. Mrs. BassCliff isn't really into "the gun thing" as in a hobby or avocation. She just wants one for self defense. I'd still like to add a couple more pistols, a rifle, and a shotgun to our little armory. ;)

I just wanted to bring my little story full circle. Kahr was kind enough to send a stock sight replacement under warranty plus I ordered one of their Dawson fiber optic sights for this pistol. We'll blame the long shipping time on the covid complications and extra holiday shipping traffic. They arrived this past Wednesday and I got busy gunsmithing again.
This is where I started. Mrs. BassCliff's brand new CW9, which I promptly took apart, cleaned, installed a Wolff trigger spring and an MCARBO stainless steel striker spring guide to replace the plastic part.

After Mrs. BassCliff's first day at the range, she didn't eve let me shoot it, the stock sigh was broken off. I think she knocked it off with her holster. It was her first time using a holster.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3e5DvYYnpqPinFWhLSn8WWTA891wAK5DIur0Z1os8RIEuXVEYA _X-VlDIovhL5G4gHWS6dLAkvJoZ_IIHFCGV-ZgeiQSiKMJ0ZNR5NaUsQvm7KAUb-z5XQGYT-kEimzWz8dERZtMGlwJnYKZvLpsK0Zsw=w1102-h826-no?authuser=0
Oh boy! I'm ready to fix stuff! The new stock sight is there on the left. I'll keep it for a spare just in case. Instead of epoxy I went with the suggested red thread locker. The upgraded fiber optic sight came with a spreader punch tool. Cool.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fKbUns4R_27f9rN_lgWp06A6IRJw3IQBIbZ95x8ZJZNaRqUuh evYXbReF7YpksOfl0sROZOn6Jm9MFqCcIC4fyQ0Ng6rpw1srG9 ZJztLDxmeVQBARElvHhAfWSnF6gvpF3wuXxuIrI2Xop73jcDFd YbA=w1102-h826-no?authuser=0
I put a drop in each hole and coated the underside of the sight, placed it, and admired it while I let it dry for a while.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3dowVCleHbOOZtKf53VAmpzCl25SBMczOQ82VVTHIghGzcxtT6 Mx5ZL11096P2JTq1tXMl_5oRmZILqcIU0dQXF9eMJKV3TSVyTn iVvPSLvneTnM8MHl5S3x6QEi3ak2BAs5RjDPHJcYrAJwz782ms Wrg=w1102-h826-no?authuser=0
Ooooo! Ain't it purdy? I love how the fiber picks up the light and makes the dot glow. Since I didn't have a vice I used a couple of pieces of wood to support the base of the sight and not put any pressure on the top of the sight while I used the spreader punch. These are a couple of paint stirrer sticks from Home Depot, good straight edges and just the right height.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3cpv_Nf1NB9J1g1uKsxdIwz1gpX1mt1E_aQERZX-1pVcV7_jYd5aejFKwuDvPj5wd9nT6ardpHjHUNSce89lOBxmcu iKJSbBFhEF39JkgxTxZ50jQJ0vA_plo2nsfsvLbflnj-3_m5DO-ZCs4GNMMJyNg=w1102-h826-no?authuser=0
Then I just inserted the "crooked" spreader punch thorough the muzzle opening, then around the other side for the rear post, and gave the bottom of the posts a few good taps. It doesn't take a lot.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3eLwLddTnt4K1yX0Ulk6MhTxleQm0y6m5EV-To_tRKYqPPVG8O-R_wVrMMFAH6kxZzerTPapxISPrjprHOeyNYZUEu30Cyo8iYKSD e-H7mwi1vRIDKuuM-62QZ6m7E6Uvir4Ob7Yza2PWvDOQF7EuHfZQ=w1102-h826-no?authuser=0

Hi,
To continue:
I inspected all around the sight to make sure it was seated securely. You don't want any space between the slide and the sight. Otherwise you'd have to carefully tap the top of the sight to make it flush.

You're welcome! Yes, I really like that sight too. I hope it doesn't get broken. It came with a couple of extra fibers but I might have to buy a cigar lighter to install one properly. I don't know if a cigarette lighter would work. I don't smoke cigarettes but I do smoke about one cigar a year. ;)

How do you like the Wolff trigger spring? Did it make a difference from stock? I really like the stock, smooth trigger pull on these pistols even though they have quite a bit of take up.

Thanks! I love spewing electrons all over the internet. ;)
I haven't actually shot this pistol yet. I need to ask Mrs. BassCliff nicely. :D Originally I had bought the Wolff spring (~5lbs) and the MCARBO spring kit (~4lbs) because I knew the stock ~6lbs trigger pull would not be comfortable for her. Mrs. BassCliff loves her CW9, especially now with the new front sight. I have done some dry fire practice with it and the trigger seems to have a long, steady, smooth pull. The trigger reset is almost all the way out but she doesn't mind. We'll get to the range soon so she can try out her new front sight. Maybe if I ask nice she'll let me shoot it too. ;)

I finally got around to shooting a couple hundred rounds through Mrs. BassCliff's CW9. The Wolff spring makes the trigger just a little lighter. It's still a long, smooth pull even after "the wall" where it resets. It's that DAO system. I'm not a big fan of the trigger but Mrs. BassCliff likes it. The new front sight seemed to be accurate when that long trigger pull didn't mess me up. It takes some getting used to. I'm so used to my XD9 that it's going to take me a couple hundred more rounds to really get comfortable with the CW9. If you'd like to have a look at my latest range day you can find it HERE (https://www.***********/threads/basscliffs-8th-range-report-1-30-2021-rmr.451692/#post-7960364). Well, dang! I guess I can't post a link to an outside forum here. Sorry.

It was quite a workout today at Burro Canyon Shooting Park (http://burrocanyon.com/) in the canyons above the lovely city of Azuza. The fetching Mrs. BassCliff and I loaded up our kit and headed out for an 8am shoot-em-up.

This is the access road up to the shooting park. We are really climbing up switchbacks to get to the range.

Jacob chats with the other students while the other instructors discuss the airspeed of an unladen swallow. We actually had to chase some birds away from the range so that we did not hit any wildlife today.

The other two students were just starting out. But we listened to Jacob tell his stories all over again.

My dear wife is having a ton of fun putting holes in the paper and learning to "chest, grip, pull, rotate, join, extend, fire". It's quite a process learning to draw properly.

Our first drawing drills were single shots to the dots (or in between) as commanded by our instructor. Jacob stressed that this wasn't really marksmanship training. We were learning to draw smoothly and win a gunfight.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3dQTIlPx67iaxA9e6RjejscSkH4zcosH2riEcuqWKGwmmf3IGw k2qMKtULLB6MG-O0NxAFzdAIvgTPu28iDKwPRuG71BGz-L79vk5xkzaUtvQlUi0Hq2fOghPfQ_1LIHI3zAaciICJwJ8LzYC KIVOC3sQ=w1333-h966-no?authuser=0
After the dot drills we got fresh targets for a new drill.

This was a triple tap drill with two in center mass and one in the head. We also used non-full magazines, a different number of bullets in each of our four mags, so that we could practice "fixing" our gun if the ammo ran out in the middle of our drills.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3clhiefvw1syzU6sAt1nRMNn2BfypGPAWpekyxaMsU7mPTGFtp 9ynCKDO68hqPCU2YXhHjQXu4GiYQtIhBf5cMzouE7T3tvFN53f SIUgcvDiZfsX7jujRgWuhJal1vgrhBPM1XA5UcPpbNr-2dwswPf6g=w1280-h856-no?authuser=0
After that drill the range went cold so we could get set up for the next drill. Jacob would introduce some movement while firing at our targets.

I'll finish it up in the next post. I promise.

Hi,
One more post from Range Report #5.....
Mrs. BassCliff pays attention while her husband takes pictures. Jacob was explaining how to fire from retention. Chest, grip, pull, rotate, FIRE! Sometimes you won't have time to extend and take good aim at your target.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3ew-0TqG4XyjeAb2eCNcq8bD0ZlqTRYvH1LgLoYNe63RHucrI4d8XG xHsgg26oxvP6OiVxev7qcgm6s0EER2GGm5nyJoUUYr0u7N8KBF aMTeVtxLVXc8STbUGlo1ntqDE8c7h8BLL1MijnAiEP_zu7Rtg= w1280-h960-no?authuser=0
The drill called for a triple tap. Two shots from retention, as quickly as possible, then join, extend, and put one in the head.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3fK_8QkpcP7lA1VXTKsLuyW2s0kuqoq6aJImegJF8SUgYjMN0u HX9dN7VSdvVmEVs8yiE3wlsLWQg3vfG6N-2QzxDtRcsd9QouxyLCORh6HvdST91nHCrrIYyU-TxoUgUoMRkjm8M3nIS95YO-UeS8pkg=w1280-h960-no?authuser=0
We also ran though double target drills, added some movement, just a step or two in either direction depending on which target you were shooting at. The targets were close, only five or six feet away, to simulate close quarters combat. It was a lot to remember but it was a TON of fun! Next month we'll review and then move on to other tactical defense skills like drawing from concealed and weak hand shooting.
The only downside today was when Mrs. BassCliff noticed that her front sight had fallen off. I don't know if it came loose and got thrown from recoil or if she knocked it off with her holster but we couldn't find it. I've emailed Kahr just in case they will send one under warranty. This is the fist time this gun has been to the range. If not, they are less than ten bucks for the stock front sight. Maybe I'll take this opportunity to upgrade her sights.
This is the range where Jacob trains his Women On Target group. He also trains young women at a range in Arizona.

We had a great morning at the range, learned a lot, but now it's time to say goodbye.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pw/ACtC-3cWxpmK607h0kld67_7Xtn_szi0HIDz8NA6g4kcvhKKdC5KwtP u-kDCwda9PjfsEMLhzAWUls4RKBJgZ7LsXPCtAepRThkoP0CPt1P 9aMRxJS2zcfeASDu92tkqzrSy20siouqxGgggPx6l_IuDjtCLk Q=w1280-h818-no?authuser=0
We have a lot to practice with at home using our snap caps. I must call Kahr on Monday and see about warranty coverage for that broken sight. It looks like the screws just loosened up and the sight fell off. Odd. My XD was flawless today and Mrs. BassCliff did great racking the slide and swapping magazines on the fly. I guess I'll clean these guns tomorrow, haven't had the opportunity this evening and now it's time to say good night. Thanks for coming along with us.

You are quite welcome. I have a couple other indoor range reports featuring the CW9 and my other pistols. I should post those here too, if you don't mind. ;)
We don't have another training session scheduled until March 20th. But if I can find more ammo we might get out for some practice before then.

I belong to a couple of local outdoor ranges, but the weather lately has not been too good here for using them. Frigid temps this weekend is hard on an old guy.
