Anybody here into this? I just got my Random Generated Number. Not sure what I'll do if I'm selected to buy one. I've talked to a few people that got a nice service grade pistol in the first offering, others not so nice. Service grades are $1050.

Any opinions? Anyone receive a pistol in the first round?

Dave

I wasn't aware CMP was even doing 1911's. $1050 seems a bit rich for service grade questionable condition guns. Would love to get one if it was any kind of half way decent.

I have a (had before the flood) a 1942 vintage army 1911 which shows some wear, got it from the guy that carried it. Kind of special. Real sad about that flood.

I just read the “rules” for the CMP (only the 2nd time I’ve ever heard of it, but 1st time I looked it up). Apparently the person that wrote them is a snarky, angry s.o.b. At least that’s what I gathered. But, good luck getting one Dave

Not at $1050.00 for who knows what.
At 71 yr. old...my need for nostalgia isn't THAT powerful.

That pretty well sums up where I'm at in this deal (only pushing 73 real hard right now). If there were someone in the estate plan that might be excited about the prospect of owning a "real" 1911 one day it might sway me. There isn't. But on the other hand, $1k isn't a lot of stimulus these days. And maybe a chance for a litttle appreciation (or at least limits on loss) when I become beset with the diseases that afflict our president and decide to sell.

Quit being so crabby all the time. You remind me of my aunt Ruthie.

Hey, it has history. I think that fact trumps the overall condition. I do not have the desire but I sure understand those that do. If you are lucky enough to get one, please post pics. What a great gift to pass on.
Good luck.

If you need to add someone to the estate plan that would appreciate one of these, I'm totally up for grabs. Course you'll probably out live me by 20 years but never hurts to have a contingency plan.

Bird ain't known for being crabby, he does seem to possess some talent at people profiling. I was gonna look these CMP things up but think I'll just wait awhile.

Dave, sorry if I come across that way as it is not my intention. I was just giving my (sometimes not appreciated, sometimes maybe misunderstood) two cents about what I had read between the lines in those rules.

Colonel, thanks for saying that.

By the way, I just thought about it.... Govn’t selling one of those is kinda like “double dipping”. Selling them to folks that already bought/paid for them with their taxes. I gotta get into gov’t somehow. Those cats make all the dough! :amflag:

I just don't understand the attraction of buying a worn out pistol. History? Sure, they have history, but so doe's a rock you find on the ground. Heck, it's probably been around for 4.5 BILLION years! There is surely no history that's coming in print to tell you where these old turds have been, who they were issued to, etc. If folks want to take a chance that they are getting one that was carried by Sgt. York, or whomever, heck, go for it. Myself? I've got LOTS better things to buy with $1050.00! YMMV.

Calling a 1911 a turd??? I'm tearing up a little bit, must go get a tissue.

There certainly is a lot of raw emotion on display here, for some reason. This program is optional.

In phase one of this program, 19000 people applied for the chance to buy 8000 pistols. I've not heard the numbers for this round. My rgn seems to be low (23xxx), so I think I might get the call.

...and I did! Now the extremely proud owner of a '44 Ithaca 1911. It is just drop dead gorgeous, I love it. Happy as a clam.

Thank you president obama for making this all possible...

You bet. Plus it shoots good. Thinking the Ithaca might have been assigned to the Pacific because it seemed at home in today's hot, humid (and rainy!) weather. Prpbably Guadacanal, I can imagine.

Load was a mouse flatulance 3.3 gr Clays with my 200gr HG68.

I think that was Pattons issued 1911. He always carried his 6 shooters, probably explains why there's very little wear.
I thought Ithaca was a rare bird but researching they were equal to I think Colt with 400,000 made. Singer made a bunch too, more than I recalled. That's a beauty.

Singer made some of the best ones and are highly collectible but everybody was making Government contract 1911 pistols during the war…..Remington Rand, not the gun company but the typewriter manufacturer also made some very nice, collectible pistols, seems they both had better equipment to build small tight tolerance equipment with…….
