PM9 MagGuts Questions?

Hi all, just installed MagGuts +1 in both 6 and 7 round mags, and I noticed the following without hitting the range yet...

a) The 6 (now 7) round flush mag will hold the slide back with the OEM steel base plate, but not with the Pearce Grip Extension base, anyone else see this?

b) The 7 (now 8) round mag holds the slide back fine with the OEM base.

Anyone else see this?

Note that I'm just working the slide as hard as I can with snap caps so far, should hit the range next week to test?

Also, thoughts on how long it's ok to keeping them loaded 9with the different follower)?

My 6 round mag did fine and locked the slide back reliably, it has a Pearce Grip Extension base.

The 7 rounders, not so much. I did some reading on the comments of the magguts site and found that the solution was to bend the follower where the tab bends up at a right angle so that the vertical tab was higher. That vertical tab is what pushes up on the slide release. I used a small pair of needle nose pliers, grabbing that bit just at the tip of the horizontal(ish) section going no further than the vertical tab is deep which is also where the bend in the horizontal(ish) part is located. I then bent the tip of the horizontal(ish) part up/flatter and tested until I felt it was holding the slide back reliably. I did this on the 6 round magazine as well just in case. The reason is because while trying to shake the bugs out on the range, after emptying a mag, the slide was locked open and I had set the pistol on the bench. The slide must have just barely been locked open as when I picked it up, the slide released causing the pistol to jump enough to catch my finger in the ejection port. I do not recommend this as it does not feel optimal. Thankfully SWMBO was present to help release my finger. This was the culmination of what I deemed a "bad day at the range" and was the final sign that it was time to go home.

After the modifications, I tested all 3 of my mags multiple times with 2 rounds loaded and the slide was locking back properly. I also tapped and knocked the pistol around (with all appendages well clear of the ejection port) to make sure that it would not release without warning as it had before.

Not sure on the possible issues with leaving the magazines loaded with the follower. I plan to leave mine loaded. I feel the magguts follower is of a superior design to the OEM follower since the rounds don't have as much of a tendency to pop out when you are handling the magazines.

I hope this helps you resolve your issues.

My only complaint of the product is that the proprietor of the site does not return emails.

P.S. I also have magguts for my Sig P365 and they have performed flawlessly.

FYI, MagGuts has been responsive via email for me, and they said the followers/springs are designed to store loaded. That said, probably good to keep an eye on this aspect etc?

Regarding my problem with the Pearce Extension they didn't have a clue, and unfortunately I won't hit the range until next week to see if actual recoil makes a difference?

Thanks for this post. I may get the +1 for my CM9 mags. I picked up a +1 and +2 for a G43 and they worked good so one in the CM9 should make the Kahr even better. Plus as mentioned above the follower seems to be of very good quality.

Hi all, ok, I finally hit the range, and the MagGuts mags both worked flawlessly. It's certainly nice having "one more" LOL!

I've decided to leave things as they are as I'll be using the flush mag instead of the Pearson Extension anyways, better for the pocket etc. Both the now 7 round flush and now 8 round extended mags worked perfectly, no issues, and both held the slide back perfectly (even with my previously injured elbow weak hand alone, which I truly suck with...).

The range was packed, plus I had a friend with me so I didn't take the time to switch the base plates out, so I'm afraid the jury is still out with regards to the 6 (now 7) round flush mag and the Pearson Extended Base Plate holding the slide back, though as @grewterd mentioned adjusting the follower appears to be a simple matter if I change my mind down the road.

After all is said and done, the Maguts kits for Kahr 9mm's are a great deal IMHO!

Here's my best from 10 yds with two hands, a relatively brisk mag dump (for me anyways?), but not near double-tap speeds (I need a lot more practice with the long trigger, and this was only the second time I've fired the PM9). I definitely improved over my first experience with the PM9, and I found the Hogue Grip Sleeve to help me have a little more to grip, especially with the flush mag.

I've been curious about the MagGuts + Pearce question regarding slide locking. My magazines have both modifications and there have been some failures to lock open experienced, but never carefully evaluated. Here's my T&E on it. This is actual testing done yesterday, 7/9/2021...NOT opinion.
I have two factory original 6 round magazines for my CM9. One came with the gun, the second came directly from Kahr. Both of them proved to function perfectly in my CM9 as received. I wanted that extra round and went with MagGuts spring kits in both to get it. I have installed their 6+1 spring kit in both of them. I also installed the Pearce extension base plate and find that the added area at the bottom of the grip does help my grip on the gun, and my shooting improves. Outside of the locking open function, both magazines work just fine in my CM9. Prior to yesterday, I had a memory of "random" incidents at the range during practice times when there were "occasional" instances of the slide failing to lock back. Yesterday, I decided to do some specific testing, here's what I discovered:
Both magazines were marked some time back to allow me to know which was the one that came with the gun ( marked #1), and which was acquired later from Kahr ( marked #2). The modifications ( MagGuts + Pearce) were done on both at the same time. Turns out that the original magazine with MagGuts and Pearce ( #1) consistently fails to hold the slide open after the last round. Fails every time. When I manually pull the slide back with the empty mag #1 in the gun, the slide does lock back.
I also learned that the spare I bought from Kahr (#2) with MagGuts and Pearce consistently holds the slide open after the last round. Slide locked every time.
I cannot comment on how these magazines would function with only the Pearce, or only the MagGuts modification.
I have no explanation for this. I held them together under a light and cannot discern a difference by visual inspection.
Conclusion:
I will carry #2 in the gun on my hip and carry #1 in the spare mag pouch in my pocket and not worry about why this is happening.

I get to my favorite range next week for 10 days so hopefully I can do a bunch of shooting or as much shooting as I dare with the ammo situation being what it is.

I too had some initial trouble with Magguts units for my P365 and P365XL. I thought this was because the sides of my Magguts springs were rough and created more friction against the sides of the mags and because one or two right front corners of the springs would catch in the right mag release cutout. I cured this by smoothing the corners and sides of the springs so they were much less rough with particular attention to the right front corners of the springs. I also put a dry lubricant on the insides of the mags. There was an immediate improvement and I can load to full cap with normal effort. You might try this and let us know how it works for you. For my PM9, I definitely need the loader to top them off.

My 2 CM9 magazines with MagGuts 6+1 spring kits have been kept loaded at all times unless I’m at the range using them in a practice session. Those MagGuts spring kits were installed in November 2019.

I logged the purchase and install dates and thought it might help in the conversation.
I'm going to be taking some needle-nose pliers to the range with me next time I shoot the CM9 and see if I can "tweak" that magazine follower in my #1 mag enough to get it to hold the slide back.
We'll see....:)
