The video watered my eyes and choked me up... about the third time I've seen it, too! I re-posted it on Facebook and sent it to to my "circle".

I got my 25-foot flag pole installed yesterday and a new USA flag today. I had bought a 4'x6' but that one would strike the corner of the roof over my front porch at about 22 feet, so I ordered a 3'x5' with the same construction.... nylon with sewn stripes and embroidered stars. My "old" USA flag is up until I replace it with the newest one. It looked a little outclassed by the 3-ply 3'x5' POW/MIA flag... sturdier and needs more wind after the rain today... holds water better!

The pole came with an 18-inch PVC sleeve and called for an 18" wide by 18" deep hole with the sleeve leveled and ONE 50-pound bag of concrete to hold it. There was a slight problem. I dug essentially an 18" cube-sized hole and when I dumped the concrete in, it only came up about 4-5 inches from the bottom! They must have meant 18" diameter with a cylindrical hole. I Had a BUNCH of mortar mud from the shower pan that I didn't complete and a bag of the porcelain mortar, too... all 55-pound bags. I used all but 1/3 of FOUR bags of the "mud" and the whole bag of the porcelain mortar, adding water and mixing as I went. I had an "X" with 18" rebar near the bottom and sticking into the sides a little bit. I don't think that will blow over! The pole might break, but I will lower it or remove it for high winds. It's telescoping anodized aluminum tubes with stainless steel pins that pop out to hold the sections in place... 16 gauge, I believe, and pretty sturdy... under $200 delivered. I've been wanting one for MANY years and I finally ordered one.

I still need something to put on the gold-colored finial to protect it against the sun's UV rays. I haven't installed that on the top, yet. I did cobble together a temporary light and added a dusk to dawn timer that worked fine last night.

I did the same thing a little over a year ago. I didn't get the telescoping model, got the one with the pulley. It works good. I upgraded the PVC in the ground to a heavier PVC after checking with the manufacturer. That way I was able to dig the hole and get it all cemented in while waiting for delivery.
I took the flag down a lot at first when the wind blew but it's rated for 70mph and I just leave it up now. She sways a bit but she ain't blowing over. I got the light on top but it was kind of girlyman so added a light on the ground which I intend to relocate and make more better.

This was an early photo, I now have a smaller American on top, a Thin blue line, and then a marine corp flag. I was told by the head man at MCRD in San Diego that since my son was a Marine I could fly it, I'm kind of family by association.

Between cloudbursts I got my flag pole finalized with the finial on top and the roof vent rubber bootie on the bottom. The new USA flag is getting washed with the longest downpour now. Maybe some pix tomorrow, but could be like today! The next 8 days could be like this and then there's Hurricane, or Tropical Storm Elsa around Wednesday! :eek:

They make a fancy chrome base for the bottom, I cut a hole in an old VW hub cap, made a snug fit. Polished it up and used that. Looks pretty sharp. I'll snap a picture too when I find the time.
It's nice here now, mid 70's and dry, sure nice compared to last week 100+ day after day, we just don't get that hot around here, some on the east side get that warm but very unusual for us.

I didn't want to pay $40 for the base cover they offered, so I walked through Lowe's looking for ideas. I saw the rubber grommet thingy used for roof vents and it fit the PVC sleeve pretty tightly, so I figured it would work on the base tube. I coated it with silicone spray to help preserve it a bit and I waxed the finial ball before installing it.
I just need to find some decent lights that work dusk to dawn and replace the security light on the corner eave near the flag pole. It will be on at night, so don't need motion activation. L.E.D. bulbs, of course... cheaper to operate.

Thank you Wyn and Bawanna for going to the extra effort to fly Old Glory……My flag is up on my covered porch all the time and I leave the light on all night…….When we first moved in to this house I noticed the across the street neighbor had a 30 foot flag pole in his front yard with 3 spot lights he ran at night to illuminate the Stars and Strips which I thought was a little different until I finally met Bob and found out that he put up the pole and flew the flag 24X7 to honor his son who didn’t come home from Iraq…….It’s a big full size 4x6 flag and sometimes at night when it’s windy I can hear it flapping and snapping and it makes me sleep real good, it sounds like freedom

I should have gotten the 30 foot pole. The 4x6 flag hit the corner of the porch's roof and I had to drop back to a 3x5-footer, but one with sewn stripes and embroidered stars. The pole sizes aren't interchangeable... different diameters and I already made the base to fit the smaller tube.

I thought that the 25-footer would clear the roof, but it didn't. The 3x5 is fine, or I could fly the flags below the roof line, but they wouldn't catch the wind as well there.

I used to fly the flag from the giant oak that we just had cut down. There was a flat surface on a trimmed branch area that I fastened the canopy base using 3-inch 3/8" lag bolts and fitted 1" conduit pipe to hold the flag at an angle parallel to the street... worked great. I even put a green light behind it for one Veteran's Day when that was suggested.

Since we had that oak cut down, I decided to go ahead and get the flag pole that I had been wanting. The Flag has always been important to me, but nowadays even more.


Hopefully, it will be drier for a while with some wind tomorrow and I can get some pictures and a video. The POW/MIA flag is 3-ply and heavier, so it holds more rain and needs more wind in any case. I love to see our flag flying in the wind... at night, too.

How things work in Washington DC…….There was a bad water main break in the Capital building causing a huge flood so the building and grounds supervisor put out an emergency call for contractor bids to fix the problem…….First guy to show up was from Virginia and he checked out the damage, measured and figured out an estimate of 9 thousand dollars, 4 thousand for the crew, 4 thousand for materials and 1 thousand for profit……..The second contractor was from Alabama and figured up a repair bid of 7 thousand dollars, 3 thousand for the crew, 3 thousand for materials and 1 thousand for profit………The last contractor to show up was from Chicago and he didn’t even look at the damage but handed the building supervisor a bid of 27 thousand dollars…….The supervisor said wait a minute, your bid is way out of line with the others, what are you thinking?………The Chicago contractor pulled him closer and whispered, it’s 10 thousand for you and 10 thousand for me and 7 thousand to pay that dude from Alabama to actually do the repair work……Supervisor says, you’re hired, when can you start?…..Your tax dollars at work…….

I agree that Carroll O’Connor was in real life a liberal as most actors are and the producer Norman Lear used the character of Archie to jab conservatives but as a character Archie Bunker was perfect…..Lear wanted Mickey Rooney for the character but he turned it down which ended up being a blessing because I can’t imagine anyone else but O’Connor being Archie…….I think the older I get the more I’ve become Archie Bunker and I’m not ashamed of it……Archie Bunker was a conservative American veteran who loved his country and his thoughts on gun control are pretty much the same as mine….

I guess the older I get (actually started when I was in my early 20's), the less tolerance I have for "play actors". I prefer real people acting their normal selves .... whether I like them or not.

I don't get out much, but I do go once or twice a week to the old man amusement park and sit on one of the nice wooden benches and punch holes in paper. I even take my own hole punchers and paper :)

When I was like 9 or 10 we did something like that…..We didn’t have sleds because it didn’t snow enough in the south but we had these things called Flexi Racers which are like snow sleds but with really good wheels……..You can Google Flexi Racers to see what they look like but basically they are snow sleds on wheels with very little steering and almost no brakes and were super fast which we found out later while being towed behind cars but that’s another story…..My best friend and partner in crime across the street had a very steep driveway which ended in about a 20 foot or so bank at the bottom which was absolutely perfect to build a ramp to see who could fly a Flexi the most distance, for even more fun we would spray the ramp with charcoal lighter and set it on fire just because, well it made it a little more dangerous and apparently his parents didn’t notice or care what the hell we were doing which makes me wonder what they were thinking but let me tell you at about 20 mph over a ramp through flames hanging on to a Flexi Racer, buddy you can fly……..God must have loved us kids because we all tried to kill ourselves so many times but somehow I’m still here……

You can’t fix stupid…..Meet young Bryan Rhoden, a 23 year old aspiring rap star and very well known to the Police and Courts in the Atlanta area….At 18 he shot a kid 3 times in the chest during a botched drug deal but the kid lived and young Bryan somehow walked on that one….In his early 20’s he was arrested in two high speed Police chases which resulted in crashes and drugs were found in the cars but somehow Mr. Rhoden again walked away from jail…..Last year Bryan tried to go through Atlanta International Airport with a suitcase full of pot (guess he didn’t know about the dogs) but after fighting with police was arrested and along with the drugs they found $17,000 dollars in cash in the bag which was confiscated and placed into evidence…Again Mr. Rhoden was released but the Police did confiscate the money and drugs……

Last July 3rd Bryan carjacked, shot and killed a man and put him in the bed of his stolen F150 pickup…..Somewhere along this crime spree another man was shot, killed and placed alongside the truck owner in the bed…….Bryan then drove to an exclusive golf course and decided to drive the stolen truck across the 10th green where the club golf pro Gene Siller happened to see the accident and went to investigate and unfortunately came upon young rap star Bryan who shot him in the head killing him instantly..….Gene Siller was buried today and left a wife and two small children……

It gets better……Young Bryan was on the run 4 days but couldn’t stay out of trouble and was arrested in NE Atlanta last Thursday for DUI driving a Maserati with no tail lights, fake drive out tags, no insurance, no registration and pot in the car…….Bryan spent the night in jail but was released last Friday morning…….The local county where the golf pro was murdered had figured out who Bryan was by all the great finger prints he left in the stolen truck and his cell phone record that had him at the murder scene so when NCIC showed the DUI arrest but bail release they still had Bryan’s cell phone number so they called him up and said they still were holding the $17,000 from his previous airport arrest and wanted to return it and if he would come by Chamblee Police station they would return it to him and guess what, he did……Sometimes really dumb criminals and great Police work take thugs off the street, hopefully they keep him behind bars this time……

Another take away is how our lawyers, judges, civil rights grifters, etc have made it so that this stuff can happen. How many bad things does a bad man have to do before “the law” says enough is enough? Apparently, if you are a certain type of person, you get many free passes to rape, rob, pillage and kill.

Great joke of the day……Don’t know where else to put this post except the comedy section………...…Today Mr. Paul Hodgkins was sentenced in court to 8 months hard time in Federal Prison which pretty much destroys his chance for any kind of a future normal life…..Mr. Hodgkins is the first of many to get Federal Prison time for entering the US Capital building January 6th to protest what he and many others including myself think was a stolen Presidential Election……Mr. Hodgkins was unarmed and did no physical harm to the Capital grounds while in the building but he was on video which makes him a John Dillinger like criminal……..Mr. Hodgkins main crime according to Federal Judge Randolph Moss was that while inside Nancy’s sacred Senate Chamber he was carrying a Trump flag which apparently made him an enemy of the state so he must be punished for his criminal offense which is starting to sound a lot like what’s going on in Cuba, protest your views against a corrupt Government and then disappear in prison………

On the other hand a US Capital employee who was very well armed on January 6th shot unarmed US Air Force veteran Ashley Babbitt in the face and took her life because she dared enter the building to protest and to this day no Federal Agent has been named, let alone charged in any Court of Law for her murder and never will be………….Good luck to the many who will suffer Federal Prison time in the future because they felt they still had the right to assemble and voice their issues………..This still Merica?

And after a total of 64 years living within 10 miles of my birth place (actually 55 years, and still counting, within 3 miles of the hospital I was born in), I'm not leaving again. Twice we moved almost 75 miles away, way up North - within 40 miles of the Red River. I can't say for sure, but I think Carthage is close to 50 miles Southeast of me here in Stumpwater. And since it's been over fifty years to even think about it, I very well may have played football or run track against that old fart (respectfully :) ) from Carthage. I don't think I been through there in a year or so.

I dunno, many years ago I took my Son up to the panhandle to a ranch just south of Pala Duro Canyon for the High Power Rocketry Nationals. Neat trip, the nation wide contest that year was seeing who could launch a 16lb bowling ball to the highest altitude on an ammonium percolate "K" Motor...
Fun times, spectacular launches, way up there, with the FAA clearance to 35 thousand feet.
I have always said that I learned a lot on that trip.

The thing that has stuck with me the most since then is this, "now I really know where the middle of nowhere is..."

You know, back in the day the first thing every kid did when we got home from school was to watch Batman, forget homework because you had to see what the Joker did to Robin from the last episode…….I do remember liking the episodes with Catwoman the best for some strange reason I didn’t quite understand as an 11 year old but now I totally get it……..I never knew who played Catwoman and didn’t care as long as she wore that suit but apparently there were several actresses over the years but the internet says Julie Newman had the part in the original 60’s season 1 and 2 then Eartha Kitt took over in season 3 and later on when the feature films started Lee Meriwether got the part, there may have been more after her, not sure but for me, black leather with the proper curves and I’m down…..

My wife and I go to church with a friend who’s a cinematographer and has filmed several Disney movies like “Iron Will” and worked with many Hollywood stars over the years….Bill is really laid back and easy to talk too and tells great stories and said the two worst, hardest to work with, self absorbed actresses of all time was a tie between Mary Tyler Moore and Elizabeth Montgomery but leaning towards Montgomery winning the B!tch award……He said one of the nicest, most friendly and easy to work with actor is Tom Hanks who doesn’t act like a big star at all, just a regular guy…….
