Welcome Nathan, glad you found us. I'm sure we have some hunters here but I'm not certain who they are. In an earlier life I was an avid hunter, both rifle and archery.
I've not hunted Alaska but know many and have read tons about it as I always wanted to hunt it myself.
It's a big place and things are different depending on what area you hunt. One common denominator is they usually go bigger than usually needed. With very good reason of course due to Bears and things that will hunt you back.
If you go with a guide he'll almost certainly carry a 375 H&H or bigger. If you go to like Kodiak Island he'll probably want you to have one too as its loaded with deer but also lots of bears.
I'm not much help but I'd suggest some research, consider a guide that knows the area and weather conditions.
Welcome Nathan.
In addition to ammo, your choice of rifle should take into consideration what your area of hunting terrain is like. A 30-30 works very well in areas of heavy cover because there is often a limited range you can take a deer in due to trees and such. For longer shots you might want a rifle that is better at reaching out to 250yds or more. In any case though any rifle caliber above .22lr or magnum is likely plenty for deer, so the choice of ammo is wide open to just about anything the appropiate rifle will shoot.
Like Bawanna I don't hunt anymore and I've never hunted Alaska (or visited), but I'd sure like to.
