As a kid my parents would stuff the family, and some neighborhood kids, into the Pontiac Bonneville station wagon.
And off to the drive-in (I think it was $5 a carload - LOL!)
Park up front where there was a playground in front of the screen.
Break out the lawn chairs, cooler and have a picnic before the movies (double feature).
Pure sweetness without smartphones, tablets ...

Bought my wife a new 1973 Chevelle station wagon - the base model. 307 V8 with 3 on the tree, A/C, AM radio, heater, & tinted glass. No carpet, just rubber floor mat. It had power brakes but no power steering, so it handled like a tank. We kept that car 10 years and hauled our three boys to the drive in movie once every couple of months.
The wife would pop a three gallon bucket of popcorn (with lots of melted butter) and mix up a gallon jug of cold KoolAid for the evening snack.
Everybody had a soft plastic bowl and wiped their fingers with a wet wash cloth.
They loved watching cheesy flicks like Jason and the Argonauts.
Good times indeed.
They all remember it fondly.

That's what our wagon was also, 307, V8 Auto, but it was a Biscayne as I recall. Full size wagon and thank goodness it had power steering. My dad made me learn on his 69 GMC short bed pickup, straight 6, 3 on the tree. Insisted I learn on a stick. I begged and asked to get the basics of driving although I'd been driving for years on the farm and then I'll figure out the clutch stuff. I did fine except I always forgot to push in the clutch when I stopped.
Then I learned how to sidestep the clutch and it was all good after that.

Every once in a while out here in the Western states on the 2-lane roads I see signs that say "Roadside Table Ahead". And it's exactly that, a picnic table sitting just off the road in a little turn out area that was the 1960s equivalent to the rest stop on the interstate. Some are all grown over with weeds and trees, some show signs of still being used. Just a cool thing to see.

I had a 73 Chevelle SS in high school which was a nice car with swivel buckets and a 350 4 barrel that was a total dog in the horsepower department but the girls liked it and I remember going to the North 85 drive-in back around 74 with a little girl named Marcy to see Westworld with Yul Brunner and about half way through the movie Marcy decided she had seen enough and the rest is history……..I’ve always had very fond memories of that movie ever since…….

We had a ‘71 Ford Torino wagon Country Squire, bright red. That thing stood out like a sore thumb, and we kept it for about ten years I think. I learned to drive in it, and hoped it would be mine but my brother got it first. Black vinyl seats in Florida, you don’t wear short pants in summer. 2nd degree burns on your legs. Great car, though.

Not sure of the year on the Pontiac Bonneville (1966) ?
Had vertical headlights with a 389 4bl V8, 3sp auto trans, air conditioning and luggage rack on the roof.
Power steering, brakes and rear window in the tailgate.
9 passenger having triple bench seats with the last row facing backwards.
Used to sit on the tailgate facing forward holding the luggage rack.
Seatbelts? We didn't need no stinking seatbelts - LOL!

Texas still has a lot of those little rest stops on the state roads here & there, plus the big ones on the interstates with restrooms and enough parking for big rigs.

63 Impala Copper metallic 327 475 HP. 3 speed, 4:11 end, Edelbrock manifold, Holley carburetor, Isky cam, Hedman headers, Cherry Bomb glass packs. Regular brakes, regular steering, no air. Fun, fast car. I eventually blew it up on a hole shot and sold it for parts and pretty much broke even. I used to take it to a track we called the "Grove" and grudge race. 2 runs on the track for $8 which was quite a bit back then. If you kept winning, you kept racing for your $8. Some days/nights you'd be out in 2, but others, you could race all day if you brought enough tools, fuel, and tires.

Gutless '65 Biscayne six. U-turns, parallel parking, and even just cornering helped me develop fast hands and strong arms.
Mountain driving = remove the air filter lid, pinch the butterfly valve open with a clothespin, and carry on.
Fun prank on friends was to yank the ignition key out while driving and pretend that the steering wheel was locked.

I don't know about that. When I was in the 2nd grade, I fell head over heels for the 3rd grade teacher. Only time I couldn't wait for summer to get over with as I had planned out how I would wine and dine and propose before the end of the first day of school. I hate to do this about a local business but this is just fkn terrible.
I ordered Chinese from a local place last night (I won't name them) just went to pick it up and as I was driving home I heard the bags rustling and moving!!!
I said what the hell is that??!?!?! Is something in the bag? I thought I was hearing and seeing things so I leaned forward,
picked up the bag, put it on the passenger seat and it started again!!! more rustling ! Then I see little eyes peering out at me! !!!!!!!
I thought its got to be a rat or a mouse or something, so I carefully pulled the bag down ...
And there it was ... ... A Peeking Duck!!!

Regarding Jeepster's post above

My wife feeds the birds in our backyard. Critters like the one on the left come into our yard at night to eat the bird seed that's in the ground feeders. Our former critter like the one on the right was sprayed 5-6 times at least. Our current critter like the one on the right hasn't been sprayed yet. The author of this post found a mount that clamps a Surefire flashlight to the tube of a 1" scope. I've mounted it on my bolt action 22. It's zeroed at 15 yards with CCI's Silent 22s. I center the crosshairs between the skunk's glowing eyes and squeeze. Sometimes they just drop, sometimes they relax a certain muscle before they drop. I like it a lot better when the former happens. So do the neighbors, but they don't mind that there is one less of them either.

Years ago I drove a company truck with no AC and had that vent window turned backwards to scoop in outside air in the heat of the summer. Well, I scooped in some big bug at 60 mph and it nailed me right in the chest. Not sure what it was but it didn’t feel too good and left a big whelp.

I had a 68 RS long out of High School. High School I had a 66 Mustang.

Mine was a 67 Super Sport, Muncie 4SP, Positraction, Glasspacks, Gabriel HiJackers and US Slot Mags.
My Drivers License lasted about 7 months (Ending in a 90 day suspension)
Got a couple of duplicate licenses (before suspension), sold the Camaro and bought a 1960 Ford F100.
There's a much funnier ending to this story of which you will not get to hear... :p

I took a June bug to the cheek at 70 mph. Split me open like an over ripe melon. On the same day, a pheasant flew out of a culvert and hit a friend square in the side of the head. Never saw anyone go horizontal and still stay on the bike.

My worst on the bike was hitting a 6x6 square on at 60 mph. It fell off a trailer 3 vehicles ahead and the car in front of me straddled it because it was only like 3 foot long. Because of car I did not see it until I hit it. LUCKILY I had both hands on the bars with a firm grip because of all the traffic. I hit and went right over it with no issues to me or bike. If I would not of had both hands on it would of most likely been a disaster

Two times.
1. A buddy in the Navy, had a wasp fly down inside his jacket while riding his KZ-900. The wasp stung/distracted him so bad, he ran off the road into a barbed wire fence. He was one hurting unit.
2. In high school, a friend had a Honda 350 he rode up and down the country road he lived on, too young to have a license, around 14 or so. While going around 60 mph, a dog ran out in front of him, he t-boned it. He flew over the handle bars and broke both arms between the elbow and wrist. Major road rash. Had scars that looked like melted wax on both arms. They put him in an upper body cast, with bars running from his elbows to his chest. We all gave him a ration of Sh*t about his mom having to wipe his butt.

Ventriloquist Apologizes
A young ventriloquist is touring Norway and puts on a show in a small fishing town. With his dummy on his knee, he starts going through his usual dumb blonde jokes.

Suddenly, a blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and starts shouting, "I've heard enough of your stupid blonde jokes! What makes you think you can stereotype Norwegian blonde women that way? What does the color of a woman's hair have to do with her worth as a human being?

It's men like you who keep women like me from being respected at work and in the community, and from reaching our full potential as people! Its people like you that make others think that all blondes are dumb! You and your kind continue to perpetuate discrimination against not only blondes, but women in general, pathetically all in the name of humor!"

The embarrassed ventriloquist begins to apologize, and the blonde interrupts yelling, "You stay out of this! I'm talking to that little sh!t on your lap!"

The only street bike I ever had was a 76 Kawasaki KZ 900 which I thought was the most bad assed motorcycle you could buy and all 5’ 9” 135 lb of my skinny butt rode that monster all over north Georgia without a problem until I had my “Come to Jesus” moment on the interstate when I saw a semi up ahead and dropped it down a gear and hit it to show off and blast by him but the truck threw up a rock or something and just as I cut around him it hit me, luckily I had a full face helmet with a face shield on and whatever it was hit the shield and I instinctively pulled the my head up which at 80 mph was a bad idea because the air got under the helmet like a parachute and all I could see was blue sky, clouds and the top of a semi trailer with Overnite Transport on the side…….Somehow I didn’t lose it and finally got my head back down to see the road again and pulled off to the side to unclench from pucker factor 9 but that one scared the hell out of me……..A short time later I got married and the KZ got sold and became a sofa and love seat which is probably a good thing and why I’m still here………

Well..... I was in the Air Force in the early 60's. I was riding a friend's Vespa down to the flight line to preflight my aircraft at about 3am. I eased out onto the road and before an "oh ****" I was on my but. Not a "bike" but a tiny scooter. Rode a few real motorcycles before and after but stayed on'em all. Also built a 55 Chevy hot rod on base that was mean with a dontov cam, 10.5 compression, big carburetor, mechanical advance distributor, vet fuel pump, lifters, and more I don't remember. Oh got metal shop to install a set of dump tubes with flange caps and traction bars. Never raced it but just cruised. My thril was building it as it was all mine. Also cheap to do as most parts were stock Chevy. Sold it for $500 to another airman on discharge. Was too cheap but my thrill was satisfied.

I'm sure I've told this story before.
But we are all old (mostly) and forget much so...
Riding my Honda chopper on the freeway had two semi tractor trailers (doubles) blocking both lanes in front of me.
I think it was legal in Cali at the time?
Either way, got the bright idea to run down the white line and split lanes.
Got about between the first and second trailer and the road went into a curve!
Now I'm leaning sideways into the curve with giant semi tires spinning on either side of me
No way out, heart in my throat, I down shifted, punched it and held on for my life.
Blasted out between the two trucks at warp speed and lived to tell the tale ;)

Most of my friends either died or were seriously hurt on bikes.
I retired from my motorcycle days long ago.

As for today, my apartment has either cool or heat, but not both at the same time.
Right now it's in cool mode.
This AM it's a chilly 50 degrees and I've got the oven on with the door open - LOL!
Such is the Hard Life in Phoenix AZ :p

I worked out at the local, small town airport between my sophomore and junior years in high school. On lunch break with a couple of other guys, a buddy we all knew road up on his Yamakamzukionda 550 I believe, or something like that. Said he was selling it and asked if any of us were interested. I told I was, though my mom threatened to end my life quite soon if I ever got a bike.

So I asked him if I could take it for a ride and he agreed. This little town airport had 7 runways and could handle the largest planes, both military and commercial, as it was built as a refueling stop during WWII by and for the military for cross country flights, located in the Texas panhandle. The airport used only two of the runways and the others were more or less abandoned, but still flat and straight.

I took off on the bike nice and easy and headed toward the abandoned runways. Once I got to them I opened it, flying at break neck speed with the wind in my hair, squinting my eyes as I didn't wear glasses, my feet nice and cool due to my holey sneakers, with the same to be said with my legs due to numerous holes throughout my jeans. My tshirt also provided a wonderful cooling effect on that hot summer day. For some reason I decided to glance down at the speedo. Pegged at 85 (think Jimmy Carter mandates for those old enough to remember).

The runway was not in the best of shape. True, it was flat, straight and long, but there were plenty of cracks, chunks of concrete, the occasional tumble weed and various bugs flying about. A thought went through my pea sized teenaged brain that there was better than a 50/50 chance that I wouldn't have to worry about my mom taking my life as I was more than likely about to become a very long grease stain on an old WWII runway of my own accord.

Last time I rode a bike, and pretty sure I wouldn't be here if I had ever bought one. I may have said to my buddies before and since that last ride, "Hold my beer and watch this." Add a bike going all out and I'm positive the odds would have caught up with me.

Bikes have never been good for my family, starting with my Dad.
He had a 1918 Indian that he rode when he was a student at the U. Of Missouri starting in 1929. During his sophomore year he was going to ride it home to Nodaway County for Christmas but missed a curve and landed in a corn field with a broken leg. Wish I had that bike now though - it would be a cool display in my man cave room.
My oldest brother had a German Zundapp 250 that he rode around Austin as a U. Of Texas student in the late ‘50s. He got t-boned by a Volkswagen on campus, breaking his leg. He sold the bike and bought a Volkswagen.
In the early 1980s his son had a Yamaha 550 dirt bike in Austin. Some old fart pulled out of a driveway too fast for my nephew to avoid hitting him. Nephew not only broke his leg flying over that car, but the foot peg made a huge hole in his thigh. Still has quite a scar there.
My youngest son snuck his older brother’s Kawasaki 500 trail bike out one day, but only got a block from home before hitting a curb and dislocating his shoulder after landing in someone’s front yard.
I had a 1975 Honda CB200 and a 1980 CT110, but luckily never put either one down. Sold the 200, and one of my boys kept the little 110 as a classic.

Never knew you was a pilot Old Lincoln. You've been holding out on us some.

Nope not a pilot! Pilots were a dime a dozen, but only 1 crew chief per kc135 and that was me. It was all mine and loving to fly I flew 95% of when it flew. Mostly sat in the jump seat between pilots and silently critiqued them. Had favorites and loosers. Always great jobbed the winners and no comment to others. My altimeter favorite was on who on a calm day would set it down so softly passengers (whe we had them) couldn't tell. I'd quietly tell the one next to me we're down and they'd usually laugh until the spoilers popped up and breaking. The looser's thought dropping my puppy from 3 feet was normal. I absolutely loved my job and the organization was great. The absolute only reason for getting out was 1 rotc worm that carried a Ceasars complex and actually shut down operations to force a barracks cleanup. I was in ear range when the first shirt caught up with him breathing fire. The LT stupidly tried to pull rank on him and boy howdy that didn't last long. The green LT disappeared shortly after. My grief was the possibility of others in a second hitch with no guarantees of deployment. They promised a promotion which was pushed hard by everybody except the wing commander who declared nobody goes nco the first hitch.
Had second thoughts for many years afterwards.

The CIA had an opening for an assassin.
After all the background checks, interviews and testing were done, there were three finalists: two men and a woman.

For the final test, the CIA agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun.

"We must know that you will follow your instructions no matter what the circumstances. Inside the room you will find your spouse sitting in a chair. Shoot to kill”.

The man said "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife".

The agent said, "Then you are not the right man for this job. Take your wife and go home".

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about five minutes. The man came out with tears in his eyes, "I tried, but I can't kill my wife."

The agent said, "You don't have what it takes, so take your wife and go home."

Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same instructions to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room.
Shots were heard one after another. They heard screaming, crashing, and banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet.

The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping sweat from her brow.

“The gun was loaded with blanks ”, she said. "I had to kill him with the chair

A good Brit friend sent me this one:

An Airbus 380 is on its way across the Atlantic. It flies consistently at 800 km/h at 30,000 feet, when suddenly a Eurofighter with a Tempo Mach 2 appears.
The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus, boring flight isn’t it? Now have a look here!"
He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, and then swoops down almost to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He loops back next to the Airbus and asks: "Well, how was that?"
The Airbus pilot answers: "Very impressive, but watch this!"
The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens. It continues to fly straight, at the same speed. After 15 minutes, the Airbus pilot radios, "Well, how was that?
Confused, the jet pilot asks, "What did you do?"
The AirBus pilot laughs and says: "I got up, stretched my legs, walked to the back of the aircraft to use the washroom, then got a cup of coffee and a chocolate fudge pastry."
The moral of the story is: When you’re young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great. But as you get older and wiser, you learn that comfort and peace are more important.
This is called S.O.S.: Slower, Older and Smarter.
Dedicated to all my senior friends ~ it’s time to slow down and enjoy the rest of the trip.

Talking about winged cars tonight I watched a TV show about how a shop built a replica of Bobby Issac’s number 71 K&K Insurance 426 Hemi NASCAR 1969 Dodge Daytona Charger with some slight improvements like a modern race car chassis with 4 link rear coil overs front and rear but other than that every other part was exactly the same as the original car they took to the track back in 1969 …..They took the car out to the Bonneville Salt Flats to see just how fast they could go in a straight line with high speed cameras recording what happened……The car did what it was built to do but at just over 200 mph even with a pointed nose and a chin spoiler the front suspension rose almost 5 inches causing the car to go out of control on the salt and spin out because the wing was doing it’s job too good planting the rear end down but lightning the nose to the point they couldn’t maintain control…….The fastest run of 226 mph came with the rear wing at neutral down force and letting the vertical side wings control the rear movement of the car…….To think those guys were racing basically this same car around in a circle at speeds of near 200 mph on crappy tires and very little technology way back in the day it’s amazing that more drivers were’t killed…….

Only car I ever owned with Wings was a 1960 Cadillac.
Had a 390 V8 4BL with an automatic trans.
From a dead stop I'd floor it and count the transmission shifts - I swore it had a 4sp auto!
Raced a friend in a 70s Chrysler 440 and walked away from him - LOL!

Talking about older cars and what they meant to us back in high school.
Really makes me sad for then next generation and what's to come.
These soulless, computer controlled, self driving electric sleds are so sad...

Airplane SEL, MEL, IFR
Commercial rotocraft, helicopter IFR
Somewhere between 11k to 12k hours.

That pic was misleading. We are expected to have the flight manual pretty much memorized. The mx manuals are a step by step guide and are intended to be used as such.

A 6 banger, 3 on the tree. Went to the boneyard and got some extra tires on rims for $10. We took it out to a country bar we used to hang out at (underage) which had a super steep drive going down to a parking lot bordering a lake. We would coast the car down the drive backwards and see who could get closest to the lake before letting the clutch fly. We'd burn the tires all the way up the steep slope and out on to the road. Filled the neighborhood area with major smoke. Neighbors must have loved us. We figured at the least, we'd eventually burn out the clutch or blow the thing up. After a few weekends and all out of tires and getting super-hot, the thing was still running. The mechanic neighbor got wind of this and bought it back from us for $25.
