View Full Version : Loving The Compensated 9

I posted up earlier about todays range session with a few different guns, which were all shot for the first time by me. I can not stop thinking about what a great experience the compensated Beretta 92FS was. I had posted up a while back about the crazy looking mods I had made, but had not until today had a chance to test it out. I'm blown away. I've had recoil absorbing 9mm's (Colt Competition, other 9mm 1911's such as the Dan Wesson PM9) that I LOVED, but none ever were what this one seems to be.
When I loaded it with the Uplula, it just kep accepting rounds. I put 24 rounds in it before it would take no more. Topped it off for 25!
Then I shot it. I had first ran two 45 1911's and a pocket sized Kahr 9mm. Again, all first time shooters for me. Once I figured out that the POA and POI were of a "Combat" sight picture, I started making ragged holes. (using the sights, which I do for range guns, but not for carry guns).
The thing that really gets me is the feel when I hold it, and the softness of the recoil and muzzle rise. I've heard people report shooting 9mm's that "feels like you are shooting a 22". Under my breath I've always said "yeah, right". But to me, that's how this one shoots. The front sight barely rises and is back where it came from in what seems to be mili seconds. I never, in the course of 143 rounds had to adjust my grip because of recoil. This is my new favorite.
If you have the chance to shoot a gun with a good, true compensator, please do. You are in for a treat!
In my cool weather (mosquitos will be gone in my garage workspace) project list of things to do is to finish polishing the same compensator for a nickeled/polished Beretta 92s. I can't wait to see how that older gun compares. Thinking it will be somewhat similar, or at least I hope so! Any Beretta 92 (or varients) lovers on here?19297

Ankle carry?

Lol! Highly unlikely. Yes, it is long in both directions. Not everyone's cup of tea for sure.

I've paired my firearms down over the years but have owned two 92's and 3 96's. Always loved the 96's myself. To me, one of the nicest looking designs and actions. Great shooters. Of course, I'm a bit prejudiced as you can tell by my screen handle.:p

I've never tried one, though I know I should. Just never floated my boat. I'll probably find out one day the 92 is the gun I should have owned all along, but who knows.

I babysat about 30 92's and then about 40 96's back in my department days. I still have a 92 officer buy back gun from when we switched. I regret not buying the 96 when they went to Glocks.
Many departments didn't like them, claimed they had issues. We never had any issues that could be blamed on the gun.
I vividly recall the Beretta Armorer Class. 3 very full days of totally dismantling the gun. Bajillion springs and detents in that slide. It was fun though. Stayed in contact with the instructor up until a few years ago.
His rule was when springs go flying, look for 5 minutes, then go to his magic box and get a new one. End of the day I'd find springs I was sitting on or stuck to clothing. About 25 in the class so spring were flying.

I've shot the military version many times, and as much as I hate to admit it, I shot it better than the 1911. I didn't like when the military dropped the 1911's so we would fit in better with NATO so we would all be shooting 9mm's. Probably why I've never had a 9mm. Well, that IS the reason I've never had a 9mm. I do have a 1911, though!

Good for you AJBert, real men and even some half men like myself still carry 1911's in 45. I'm semi ashamed to admit I've kind of been shopping for a 9mm 1911, course when I'm broke I can do a lot of shopping with no harm. Think I need to find a new part time job to have a little slush fund again.

It's definitely got considerable appeal. Some cops I know would be all over that for a duty gun. Bet it's just a blast to play with.

Nice set up Bird! Something I've always liked about Berettas is their smooth as glass slide action. Great guns that surprisingly have lost some of their appeal since losing the military contract. Still well made though and as good as ever. I still have my Cougar and probably always will but have let the rest go.

Hey beretta, yes, I guess you would be the beretta guy on here. I did not put 2 and 2 together! I would like to try one of those 96’s after looking them up. Would look nice with that rail and a compensator! ;)

I had one a few years ago. I was all about the 1911 at the time, so it did not vibe with me at the time. I certainly feel different now. If you get a chance, you may just like them. But then again, one man’s pleasure can be another's terror!

I was looking at the take apart vids and see what you mean. I hope I can retain all of those springs! I may just use the large ziplock freezer bag method!

I had the opposite happen my first go round, as stated in my recent reply, and shot the 1911’s better. But this go round, at least with the comped version, I’m shooting it better than my 1911’s. Go figure! : )

It certainly is. Yes, if I was going to be a duty guy, I’d sure like to have that capacity!

I think you remember me posting up about “buttercup”, the Colt Competition I had in 9mm. That thing was suuuuuper fun to shoot and one of the, if not THE most accurate 1911 I could shoot. I bet you’ll really enjoy one when, not if, you do get a 9mm 1911.
