President Biden claims that he spoke to the man who invented insulin (http://video.foxnews.com/v/6314752111112)
However, insulin, a hormone produced in the body, was never invented, but was discovered by Frederick Banting.
The late physician and scientist died at the age of 49 on Feb. 20, 1941.
Biden was born on Nov. 20, 1942.

I'm a professional computer programmer that started in 1977.
Wrote programs on coding sheets with number 2 pencils.
Keypunch operators read the sheets and punch up the cards.

We used keypunch cards in College for our Fortan class. We used to mess with our buddies, by taking one card and randomly inserting it out of order.

I took computer science in college in 1969 and their computer was an IBM 360 with punchcard input. We typed our own program cards. If we had had personal computers back then, I would have probably stayed with that as my major. I took a break in early 1970 and worked in a banK in the data processing department... mainly processing the payment cards through a card reader. I learned why you don't fold, spindle, or mutilate payment cards... or put tape on the cards! What fun it was to try to balance the totals with all of that taking place. I quit after 6 months and went back to college. Programmers were starting at only about $500 a month! I was making that tax free flying in a combat zone before college!
I changed my major to Math and got my degree in that. When Radio Shack introduced their PC's, I bought one and did a lot of programming in BASIC... as a hobby and mainly to change games and give me more control. :D
Oh, yeah... staples and paperclips, too!

1977 was driving a forklift for $5 an hour during the summer.
Graduated with an A.A. in Data Processing (C+ average I think - LOL).
Sent over 100 resumes into the L.A. basin.
Got three interviews and one job offer for a Cobol Programmer at $4 an hour!
Got married, bought a travel trailer and moved to Norco CA (where I knew nobody).
All before I started my first day of work.
40+ years, two failed marriages, three kids and three grandkids later.
I'm making 6 figures and preparing to retire.
It's been a good ride :)

I remember paying over a hundred bucks for a Texas Instrument TI 30 calculator in the early 80’s which would be like 5 hundred bucks in todays money to get through electronics tech school and thinking that thing must have come from outer space because at that time we only needed pencil, paper, a desk phone and a Rolodex to work with and if in the field we used a pay phone to call the office if necessary…..Somehow we survived and made it work but then we got beepers and everything changed…….
Looking at todays world with people addicted to their cell phones with TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, Alexia, the dark web and AI I think we were much better off before we got so smart……..

When I got out of the flying for the Navy I went to work for Chevrolet as an engineer. It was okay, but I wanted more, so I went to law school at night and got my JD in 1977. I worked as a corporate lawyer for twenty years until I got fed up with the profession. I bought my first computer about 1979, a Commodore 64 portable [?]. I taught myself how to program it and then jumped on the first IBM PC. I started my own computer company, and ran that until I got cancer in 2005 and retired. BTW, the cancer was gone in three months after a lot of radiation treatments, but I stayed quit since I was 76.

Graduated Highschool in 1975.
Was taking anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry...
No student in my classes owned a calculator.
In my science classes the school had a single Texas Instruments calculator per class.
76/77 went to Antelope Valley Community College for my A.A.
They had an IBM System 3 mini-computer for Cobol/Fortran classes.
Coded on an IBM 029 keypunch (cards).
In High School was figuring out what I wanted to do professionally.
Dad, a Clinical Psychologist, wanted me to be a physician.
And I had to specialize, although the specialty was my choice.
I chose Radiology until I looked up the grades and other admission requirements.
With severe dyslexia it was crystal clear higher education was out for me.
I wanted to be a Park Ranger.
But with very few job openings, 4 year degree requirements and relatively low pay - it looked like a poor choice.
So I went back and filtered on two year degrees, job openings, max salary and long term growth.
Computer Programming was the clear winner.
Didn't know much about it and had no interest in it.
But It looked like the best choice so...
For many years I refused to buy a personal computer.
Employers would loan me a "take home" computer for production support.
Finally they stopped loaning out computers and I had to get one for myself.
Started with Chromebooks.
But the latest ones haven't been unreliable for me.
So switched to a cheap HP laptop running Windows.
When I retire I'm sure I'll never code again :p
But that profession did served me well over the years.
Oh, this being a gun forum after all.
I think my first, sort of, gun was a Daisy Red Ryder BB gun.
Later moved up to a 5mm Sheridan Blue Streak air gun.
And finally, as a kid, got a Ruger 10/22 carbine.
My first centerfire weapon was a S&W 629 44 Mag (I wasn't a kid anymore - LOL!)

In a discussion elsewhere about laziness, someone posted this story from a Navy buddy….
“I was once on a US military ship, having breakfast in the wardroom (officers lounge) when the Operations Officer (OPS) walks in. This guy was the definition of NOT a morning person; he’s still half asleep, bleary eyed… basically a zombie with a bagel. He sits down across from me to eat his bagel and is just barely conscious. My back is to the outboard side of the ship, and the morning sun is blazing in one of the portholes putting a big bright-ass circle of light right on his barely conscious face. He’s squinting and chewing and basically just remembering how to be alive for today. It’s painful to watch.
But then zombie-OPS stops chewing, slowly picks up the phone, and dials the bridge. In his well-known I’m-still-totally-asleep voice, he says “heeeey. It’s OPS. Could you… shift our barpat… yeah, one six five. Thanks.” And puts the phone down. And then he just sits there. Squinting. Waiting.
And then, ever so slowly, I realize that that big blazing spot of sun has begun to slide off the zombie’s face and onto the wall behind him. After a moment it clears his face and he blinks slowly a few times and the brilliant beauty of what I’ve just witnessed begins to overwhelm me. By ordering the bridge to adjust the ship’s back-and-forth patrol by about 15 degrees, he’s changed our course just enough to reposition the sun off of his face. He’s literally just redirected thousands of tons of steel and hundreds of people so that he could get the sun out of his eyes while he eats his bagel. I am in awe.
He slowly picks up his bagel and for a moment I’m terrified at the thought that his own genius may escape him, that he may never appreciate the epic brilliance of his laziness (since he’s not going to wake up for another hour). But between his next bites he pauses, looks at me, and gives me the faintest, sly grin, before returning to gnaw slowly on his zombie bagel."

A blast from the past:
Neighborhood Hazard
(or: Why the Cops Won’t Patrol Brice Street)
I never dreamed slowly cruising through a residential neighborhood could be so incredibly dangerous!
Studies have shown that motorcycling requires more decisions per second, and more sheer data processing than nearly any other common activity or sport. The reactions and accurate decision making abilities needed have been likened to the reactions of fighter pilots! The consequences of bad decisions or poor situational awareness are pretty much the same for both groups too.
Occasionally, as a rider I have caught myself starting to make bad or late decisions while riding. In flight training, my instructors called this being “behind the power curve”. It is a mark of experience that when this begins to happen, the rider recognizes the situation, and more importantly, does something about it. A short break, a meal, or even a gas stop can set things right again as it gives the brain a chance to catch up.
Good, accurate, and timely decisions are essential when riding a motorcycle…at least if you want to remain among the living. In short, the brain needs to keep up with the machine.
I had been banging around the roads of east Texas and as I headed back into Dallas, found myself in very heavy, high-speed traffic on the freeways. Normally, this is not a problem, I commute in these conditions daily, but suddenly I was nearly run down by a cage that decided it needed my lane more than I did. This is not normally a big deal either, as it happens around here often, but usually I can accurately predict which drivers are not paying attention and avoid them before we are even close. This one I missed seeing until it was nearly too late, and as I took evasive action I nearly broadsided another car that I was not even aware was there!
Two bad decisions and insufficient situational awareness…all within seconds. I was behind the power curve. Time to get off the freeway.
I hit the next exit, and as I was in an area I knew pretty well, headed through a few big residential neighborhoods as a new route home. As I turned onto the nearly empty streets I opened the visor on my full-face helmet to help get some air. I figured some slow riding through the quiet surface streets would give me time to relax, think, and regain that “edge” so frequently required when riding.
Little did I suspect…
As I passed an oncoming car, a brown furry missile shot out from under it and tumbled to a stop immediately in front of me. It was a squirrel, and must have been trying to run across the road when it encountered the car. I really was not going very fast, but there was no time to brake or avoid it—it was that close.
I hate to run over animals…and I really hate it on a motorcycle, but a squirrel should pose no danger to me. I barely had time to brace for the impact.
Animal lovers, never fear. Squirrels can take care of themselves!
Inches before impact, the squirrel flipped to his feet. He was standing on his hind legs and facing the oncoming Valkyrie with steadfast resolve in his little beady eyes. His mouth opened, and at the last possible second, he screamed and leapt! I am pretty sure the scream was squirrel for, “Banzai!” or maybe, “Die you gravy-sucking, heathen scum!” as the leap was spectacular and he flew over the windshield and impacted me squarely in the chest.
Instantly he set upon me. If I did not know better I would have sworn he brought twenty of his little buddies along for the attack. Snarling, hissing, and tearing at my clothes, he was a frenzy of activity. As I was dressed only in a light t-shirt, summer riding gloves, and jeans this was a bit of a cause for concern. This furry little tornado was doing some damage!
Picture a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a t-shirt, and leather gloves puttering maybe 25mph down a quiet residential street…and in the fight of his life with a squirrel. And losing.
I grabbed for him with my left hand and managed to snag his tail. With all my strength I flung the evil rodent off the left of the bike, almost running into the right curb as I recoiled from the throw.
That should have done it. The matter should have ended right there. It really should have. The squirrel could have sailed into one of the pristinely kept yards and gone on about his business, and I could have headed home. No one would have been the wiser.
But this was no ordinary squirrel. This was not even an ordinary pissed-off squirrel.
This was an evil attack squirrel of death!
Somehow he caught my gloved finger with one of his little hands, and with the force of the throw swung around and with a resounding thump and an amazing impact he landed square on my back and resumed his rather anti-social and extremely distracting activities. He also managed to take my left glove with him!
The situation was not improved. Not improved at all. His attacks were continuing, and now I could not reach him.
I was startled to say the least. The combination of the force of the throw, only having one hand (the throttle hand) on the handlebars, and my jerking back unfortunately put a healthy twist through my right hand and into the throttle. A healthy twist on the throttle of a Valkyrie can only have one result. Torque. This is what the Valkyrie is made for, and she is very, very good at it.
The engine roared as the front wheel left the pavement. The squirrel screamed in anger. The Valkyrie screamed in ecstasy. I screamed in…well…I just plain screamed.
Now picture a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a slightly squirrel torn t-shirt, and only one leather glove roaring at maybe 70mph and rapidly accelerating down a quiet residential street…on one wheel and with a demonic squirrel on his back. The man and the squirrel are both screaming bloody murder.
With the sudden acceleration I was forced to put my other hand back on the handlebars and try to get control of the bike. This was leaving the mutant squirrel to his own devices, but I really did not want to crash into somebody’s tree, house, or parked car. Also, I had not yet figured out how to release the throttle…my brain was just simply overloaded. I did manage to mash the back brake, but it had little affect against the massive power of the big cruiser.
About this time the squirrel decided that I was not paying sufficient attention to this very serious battle (maybe he is a Scottish attack squirrel of death), and he came around my neck and got IN my full-face helmet with me. As the faceplate closed partway and he began hissing in my face I am quite sure my screaming changed tone and intensity. It seemed to have little affect on the squirrel however.
The rpm’s on The Dragon maxed out (I was not concerned about shifting at the moment) and her front end started to drop.
Now picture the large man on the huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a very ragged torn t-shirt, and wearing one leather glove, roaring at probably 80MPH, still on one wheel, with a large puffy squirrel’s tail sticking out his mostly closed full-face helmet. By now the screams are probably getting a little hoarse.
Finally I got the upper hand…I managed to grab his tail again, pulled him out of my helmet, and slung him to the left as hard as I could. This time it worked…sort-of. Spectacularly sort-of, so to speak.
Picture the scene. You are a cop. You and your partner have pulled off on a quiet residential street and parked with your windows down to do some paperwork.
Suddenly a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a torn t-shirt flapping in the breeze, and wearing one leather glove, moving at probably 80mph on one wheel, and screaming bloody murder roars by and with all his strength throws a live squirrel grenade directly into your police car.
I heard screams. They weren't mine...
I managed to get the big motorcycle under directional control and dropped the front wheel to the ground. I then used maximum braking and skidded to a stop in a cloud of tire smoke at the stop sign at a busy cross street.
I would have returned to fess up (and to get my glove back). I really would have. Really. But for two things. First, the cops did not seem interested or the slightest bit concerned about me at the moment. One of them was on his back in the front yard of the house they had been parked in front of and was rapidly crabbing backwards away from the patrol car. The other was standing in the street and was training a riot shotgun on the police cruiser.
So the cops were not interested in me. They often insist to “let the professionals handle it” anyway. That was one thing. The other? Well, I swear I could see the squirrel, standing in the back window of the patrol car among shredded and flying pieces of foam and upholstery, and shaking his little fist at me. I think he was shooting me the finger…
That is one dangerous squirrel. And now he has a patrol car…
I took a deep breath, turned on my turn-signal, made an easy right turn, and sedately left the neighborhood.
As for my easy and slow drive home? Screw it. Faced with a choice of 80mph cars and inattentive drivers, or the evil, demonic, attack squirrel of death...I’ll take my chances with the freeway. Every time.
And I’ll buy myself a new pair of gloves.

Four Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee in St. Peter's Square.
The first Catholic man tells his friends,
"My son is a priest. When he walks into
a room, everyone calls him 'Father'."
The second Catholic man chirps,
"My son is a Bishop. When he walks into a room people call him 'Your Grace'."
The third Catholic gent says,
"My son is a Cardinal. When he enters a room everyone bows their head and says 'Your Eminence'."
The fourth Catholic man says very proudly,
"My son is the Pope. When he walks into a room people call him 'Your Holiness'."
Since the lone Catholic woman was sipping her coffee in silence, the four men give her a subtle, "Well....?"
She proudly replies,
"I have a daughter,

4 Mexicans
U.S. Navy destroyer stops 4 Mexicans rowing towards Texas. The Captain gets on the megaphone and shouts, Ahoy, small craft. Where are you headed?
One of the Mexicans puts down his oar, stands up, and shouts, "Gringo, we are
invading the United States of America to reclaim the territory taken by the USA during the 1800's."
The entire crew on the destroyer doubles over in laughter.
The Captain finally catches his breath, gets back on the megaphone and asks, "Just the four of you?"
The same Mexican stands up again and shouts, "No senor, we are the last four. The other 21 million are already there."

THE $100 bill
It's a slow day in the town and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit.
A tourist visiting the area drives through the town, stops at a hotel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night. As soon as he walks upstairs, the hotel owner grabs the note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.
The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his feed supplier.
The guy at the supplier takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on credit.
Now, the hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner.
The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveller will not suspect anything.
At that moment the traveller comes back down the stairs, stating that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves.
No one produced anything and no one earned anything!
However... the whole village now thinks that they are out of debt and there is a false atmosphere of optimism and glee!
And that, my friends, is how a government works!

75-year-old Dad
My 75-year-old Dad was taking his daily walk through the
park when he heard a tiny voice calling to him. "Hey,
mister! Pssst, mister!" Dad looked all around, and spotted a
little frog sitting in the grass looking up at him.
"Hey mister," said the frog. "A wicked witch cast a spell on
me, and turned me into an ugly frog. If you'll just kiss me
I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and be forever
grateful."
Dad reached down, picked up the frog, put it in his pocket,
and proceeded to walk on. The frog called out to him again,
"Hey! Didn't you hear me? I said if you'll kiss me, I'll
turn into a beautiful princess and be forever grateful."
Dad replied, "I heard you, but at my age, I'd rather just
have a talking frog!"

YES, the spiders. Black Widows in my grandparents two holer. Plus my grand father had this crusty old rooster that he messed with all the time. Very nasty, mean, evil rooster. You had to get by him to get to the out house. He would jump up and flog you with his spurs, very frightening to a youngster.

I hated using one of those at my grandparents’ place in the 1940s.
My grandparents still used one and didn't have running water in the house into the 60's. Had a pump just outside the back door. Uncles finally ran some plumbing inside the house so they had a bathtub and toilet and even running water in the kitchen.

My grandparents had an outhouse out back down in LA until my grandpa died in 86. They did have running water in the kitchen which ran into a galvanized tub on the counter. First thing my grandma did after he died was to have the middle bedroom converted into a bathroom. The house was a classic shotgun shack. I never minded using the outhouse as a kid. plenty of lizards to take care of the bugs, plus they were fun to catch.

My grandpa and uncle were lumberjacks that lived in Wolfeboro New Hampshire, their home was 5 miles down a dirt road in the woods. They had out house and a pump in the kitchen for water. The pump was next to a pot belly stove. I remember gramps telling us.....do mess around in barn next to out house; I keep my black powder in there and I don't want it blown up. He also reminded us to stay alert and watch for bears when using out house. They had quite the life. During the winter months they would carve wooden chains out of a tree...pretty cool to see a six plus foot wooden chain.
My sister still lives in New Hampshire on Ragged Mountain and regularly gets bears and moose in her back yard. She said it is hard to keep a dog living there because small ones get lost to other wild life.

Sure was for my kids.
No TV when I was little. Dad bought our first TV set when I was 10.

Sure not much worth watching now days. Except for the old stuff of course.
Winter struck the NW yesterday, and more white stuff called for rest of the week. Have to dig a path to the shop to make sawdust I guess.

It's fun to watch em. Drives the Mini Schnauzer absolutely nuts. I have several that will take peanuts right out of my hand. When it's warm and the shop door is open they'll come right inside and sit by the chair waiting for a peanut. I can even open the door a crack so the dog can't get out and while he's barking like crazy they'll still come up and take a peanut from hand. Entertaining.
Might have to start a gofundme page however. Between peanuts and deer feed and bird feed the cost are pretty high. Got deer that will just stand by the door letting us know the little feed trough is needing refilled.

Digging the rail mounted feeder Colonel. Has a Swedish feel to it. Feel sorry for the goat in the background though. Looks like the poor guy has been relegated. Must feel disowned with you feedin the deer so well.
Did you make the goat too? Pretty cool art if you ask me. You have a really nice property. Kind of place I’d love to vacation. Getting away from the city and the people in it is always good for the spirit.

Don’t see a goat anywhere in the Colonel’s pictures.

Mall shopping
Husband and Wife Christmas Shopping
A couple were in a busy shopping center just before Christmas. The wife suddenly noticed that her husband was missing and as they had a lot to do, so she called him on the mobile.
The wife said " Where are you, you know we have lots to do."
He said "You remember the jewelers we went into about 10 years ago, and you fell in love with that diamond necklace? I could not afford it at the time and I said that one day I would get it for you?"
Little tears started to flow down her cheek and she got all
choked up…
"Yes, I do remember that shop." she replied.
"Well I am in the gun shop next door to that."

Damn you guys are good. I see it now. That's a metal deal the wife brought home some time back. Poor bastard probably froze to death with snow pile up on him. I'm sure Jocko will be by soon as he hears of it and one that can't get away.

I recall that metal goat shocked the hell out of me first time I came home. Didn't know what it was at first. It was kind of a fight or flee situation for a few seconds.

I was shooting over my shoulder as I tried to roll away rapidly in the chair. Kind of like rowing a boat with one oar. Could have affected my aim. Good thing I at least missed the horses, wife would have killed me.
