Today is my birthday. I signed me and my standard poodle Charley up for "50 miles in February", to raise money for St. Jude hospital. Makes me laugh. But we will, "ger ur done".
We usually walk around 90-100 miles per month, so should be no problem meeting our goal.

The Winery
At a winery, the regular taster died and the director started looking for a new one to hire. A drunkard with a ragged, dirty look came in to
apply for the position. The director of the winery wondered how to send him away. He gave him a glass to drink. The drunk tried it and said,
"It's a Muscat, three years old, grown on a north slope, matured in steel containers. Low grade, but acceptable." "That's... that's correct.", said the boss,
astonished. Another glass... "This is a Cabernet, eight years old, a south-western slope, oak barrels, matured at 8 degrees. Requires three more
years for the finest results." "Correct!" A third glass... "It's a Pinot Blanc Champagne, high grade and exclusive, the drunk said calmly. The director was blown away, but in case this was some sort of hoax, he wanted to put the man to a real test. He winked at his secretary, secretly suggesting something.
She left the room and came back in with a glass of urine. The alcoholic tried it. "It's a blond, 26 years old, three months pregnant and if I don't get the job I’ll name the father.

I’m late to the party as usual. I think there were posts here about the cars of our youth. Spring break of my first year of grad school, I rented this to drive from Gainesville to St. Pete to hang out with friends. Ahh, the foolish innocent years, how I miss them.

Live Oaks. About 30 years old.
Had them pruned during the holidays, otherwise the damage would have been worse.

I thought they were live oaks. I lived on the gulf coast about 20 years ago and they were everywhere. Beautiful when they get really big and old (as in a few hundred years old.) My kids loved to climb on them.

A preacher gave a sermon one Sunday about being ready to meet the Lord because it can happen at any time and you had better be ready, he told the story of his grandfather who was a Biblical man who loved God who went to sleep one night and never woke up…….After the service on her way out a lady said to him, that was a beautiful sermon and I hope that I can pass away and enter heaven as peacefully as your grandfather did……The preacher said, it is a wonderful story and it would be perfect except for the three other poor bastards who were riding in the car with him and died screaming in horror as they went over that cliff………….:2eek:

Lawyers should never ask a Georgia grandma a question if they aren't prepared for the answer.
In a trial, a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney called his first witness, a grandmotherly, elderly woman to the stand.
He approached her and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know me?'
She responded, 'Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a boy,
and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs.
You think you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realise you'll never amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher.
Yes, I know you.
The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and asked, 'Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney?'
She again replied, 'Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too.
He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal relationship with anyone, and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state.
Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife.
Yes, I know him.'
The judge asked both counsellors to approach the bench and, in a very quiet voice, said,
'If either of you idiots asks her if she knows me, I'll send you both to the electric chair.

It was nice that BRANDON let the balloon upload all the data it collected direct via satellite back home BEFORE they shot it down. Now they don't have to send ANOTHER balloon to finish the "weather" gathering trip. BRANDON perhaps thought it was all on an SD CARD.

You’re telling me that in the huge state of Montana with a total population of just over a million people there wasn’t an open area where we could have safely dropped that thing and recovered the data?……..I know, let it fly all over the country and gather all the intelligence possible and wait to bring it down where it most likely never be seen again and then brag about the great military success tomorrow in the State of the Union speech…….

The following is a Public Safety Announcement. PSA
I can tell you from my many years of work in the petro chemical industry. Non-conductive flammable liquids build up static electrical charges when flowing through the air. Gasoline is a non-conductive liquid. This is why you should ALWAYS, place your lawn mower cans on the ground when filling. I saw a video, where some guys were filling lawn mower tanks in the back of a pick up. The tanks burst into flames and killed three people. Gasoline is a dangerous a substance.

We had tumblers but no the spinners. What were they?
In a house with 4 kids (2 older brothers), there was zero chance I'd ever find a spider and I remember the frustration of vainly trying to eyeball the 45's center on the spindle. Never worked.
My folks had a fancy console player with an axial catch built into the spindle that would retract with the needle arm (instead of the swing-out arm style 2nd record holder) so we could get twice the play time. Problem was that our records always flipped to side 2 instead of 1&4 & 2&3 . . . 1960's first world problems.

I had some 45s that were pressed a little off center, so leaving off the adapter let me center them better. And yes, it sounded wobbly when off center.

The world would be a better place if they brought these classes back. My senior year I had 4 periods of auto shop, one of wood shop, and one PE class. It was great.
Had I to do it over again, I cut back a few auto shops and take Home Ec, or other classes where there were some girls.
JohnR
02-18-2023, 12:56 PM
Ooh, sounds like a good excuse to intentionally fail a year! Get the auto shop skills, AND the girls in home ec.
I took typing in the 10th grade. Other guys thought I was nuts, or possibly gay. Turned out it was a big boon to me when I coded for nearly 30 years, and spent hours each day on the computer outside of work. And continue to. Didn't learn about cars until after I graduated, and was too poor to have someone else fix mine.

That is why I have to give my mom credit. She was right to make me take that class. I can type without looking. Not 110 words a minute, but I’m pretty quick. That year where I couldn’t feel my fingers was a tough typing year (2017-2018), but the sense of touch came back after the spine surgeries. The crazy thing is that I could still type without looking even when I had no feeling in the fingers. I just had to correct a lot of typos.
Bawanna

I don't have to look much either, only some of the special keys and most of those are ingrained in my extremely small mind too. Wife complains that all the characters are worn off the keyboard. So we have two, she has a normal square one that hardly gets used, I have one of those where your hands aren't scrunched together, ergonomic or whatever they call it.
Obviously they didn't have typewriters when Jocko was around, might not have had schools for that matter. I need to check in with him, have your decoder bracelets handy.

mr surveyor
02-18-2023, 09:54 PM
I never said I knew the "secret code" for those 110 wpm.
I've been a private land surveyor for a lot of years which involves about 10% time average doing records research, 50% time average in actual field work and 40% time average at the keyboard doing computations, cad mapping and typing reports. I can use two fingers on each hand and as long as I look at the keyboard I generally hit the right keys .... but if I don't stop punching buttons and look up at the screen every 20-30 words (only about a minute or so :2rolleyes: ) I may find I've had the caps lock on or have enough misspelled words to just backspace the whole line and start over. I will say that these new fangled computers are a lot friendlier than my Mom's old mechanical Underwood typewriter was back when I had to use it a few times in the 70's.
I never could play the piano either. Too danged many buttons!
I miss rotary dial

A few years back, my BIL had to get his left leg amputated above the knee. A few months later he came over to help me, along with a buddy, put a lift on my Blazer. My wife, MIL, and buddy's wife were there, too. It was the first time my wife and I had seen him since he lost his leg. My wife and MIL were doting over him to no end. Me? I treated him like nothing had happened. I figured he was also getting tired of those two always asking him if was feeling ok, needed anything, had to go pee, etc.
I got tired of them treating him like he couldn't do anything now that he only had one leg. So with my somewhat twisted sense of humor, I decided I had to do something. I asked my BIL if he could go get a tool or something. He got up on his crutches to get whatever it was and was gone about 5 seconds when I hollered at him to shake a leg and get moving. You could've heard a pin drop, until he hollered back to keep my shirt on or get it myself. About a half hour later, I pretended to be mad at him, and he knew I was setting something up. I was hooping and hollering at him, those in attendance stood with their mouths agape, in total disbelief. I winked at my BIL and then hollered out load, "I challenge you to an a$$ kicking contest!" He through his crutches down and told me to get over to him. We eyed each other with maybe a snarl or two for a short time, with our observers ready to call 911. We both took one more look at each other, got in our kicking stances, well, I did, and then started laughing our butts off.
My buddy caught on but the ladies had no clue, with my wife and MIL shooting daggers out of their eyes smack dab into the center of my chest. We went back to work and finished up the job. My BIL thanked me for not treating him any differently than from before. I did have to explain to my wife the reason why I did what I did. She came around eventually...I think.
I am the only person I know of who has challenged a one-legged man to an a$$ kicking contest, and I can honestly say that I know what a cheap French whore smells like, but that is another story.

Yep, looks familiar alright…..Next step for the boys in my old neighborhood was mini bikes, I had a Mickey Thompson with high ape handlebars with a 3 hp Briggs but I needed “More Power” so I saved a summers worth of grass cutting money and bought a used 6 hp Briggs tiller motor and doubled the juice…..We learned how to use tools, fix stuff and keep things running which led me into my later hot rod addiction but it sure was fun…… Our gang rode those things on the street for miles, ran from the cops occasionally and never thought about wearing a helmet…..

Brought back memories......That 6 HP motor probably really got that thing moving. They got going good with the 3 HP. I had a Yamaha 100, a friend had the same bike, and the rest of the "gang" had a Sears 80, a Garelli 125, a Yamaha 80, and a Honda 100......................We had a power co. track to ride on. Straight as an arrow almost to another city, so there were places where you could open them up.......I was walking to the store one day, and my friend with the Garelli says he'll give me a ride, because the pc track was a shortcut to stores in the area. I hop on, we're cruising down the track and we had helmets on. Next thing I know is he is ducking, and I'm being taken off the bike at about 35 mph. He said he yelled but I apparently didn't hear him.........Some evil person had stretched a wire across the track. My friend didn't see it until the last moment and instinctively ducked. Felt like I got hit with a baseball bat in the chest. Luckily, I was a tall skinny kid. If I'd been a bit shorter, it could have taken my head off. We laughed about it later after my recovery...........A few years later, my father worked with a guy that raced carts. Blueprinted and balanced carts made in Italy, with independent suspensions, little high revving engines, lightweight with Indy type tires, and your rear end is about an inch off the track. I got to drive one a few times. The University in town had a huge asphalt parking lot that was really smooth. Hardly anyone parked there, and it was about 400 yds. long. Top speeds were about 110 mph. and they could get there real fast. Being that I used to work at car dealerships in my younger days, I've had the opportunity to drive a lot of fast cars. That cart scared the s#!t out of me. Biggest rush, and probably pound for pound, the fastest thing I've ever driven, with my rear end an inch off the pavement. The acceleration and G force was amazing.

I haven't even thought of that is like forty years. You pop the tab out (or pre-recorded tapes had no tab) to keep from accidentally recording over the tape, then put tape over it so you can record over it again.

And if you had really cheap tape you shove paper in the hole first to support the tape so it didn’t get punctured.
