Singapore Airlines
Mother and her young inquisitive son were flying Singapore Airlines from Singapore to New York. The son (who had been looking out the window) turned to his mother and asked, 'If dogs have baby dogs and cats have baby cats, why don't planes have baby planes????'
The mother (who couldn't think of an answer) told her son to ask the pretty flight attendant.
So the boy dutifully asked the flight attendant, 'If dogs have baby dogs and cats have baby cats, why don't planes have baby planes?'
The flight attendant responded, 'Did your mother tell you to ask me that?' The little boy admitted that she did.
“Well, then, tell your mother that there are no baby planes because Singapore Airlines always pulls out on time. Now, let your mother explain that to you.!!!”

IRS guy audits fishing boat owner
The IRS suspected a fishing boat owner wasn't paying proper wages to his deckhand and sent an agent to investigate him.
IRS AUDITOR: "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them."
BOAT OWNER: "Well, there's Clarence, my deck hand, he's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1,000 a week plus free room and board.
Then there's the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of Bacardi rum and a dozen beers every Saturday night so he can cope with life. He also gets to sleep with my wife occasionally."
IRS AUDITOR: "That's The guy I'm here here to talk to- The mentally challenged one."
BOAT OWNER: "That would be me. What would you like to know?"

I assume that the placement of the "E" and the "W" is what's being questioned?

That represents a standard "Compass Rose" of a Surveyor's compass .... back in the "old days". This was on the face of the compass, with the free "floating" magnetized needle centered above it in the case. When the compass body was turned to point a specific direction, the needle remained pointed to the North and the direction that the compass body was pointed (towards the target) could be read on the compass rose. On most true surveyor grade instruments, the circular case had finely engraved marks around the entire circumference of the case face so that a more precise reading could be made.

So, when it comes to 500 year old technology she probably knows where she is after all.

Thank you for that explanation. In my feeble recently retired brain I had been trying to figure that out for about a year when compared to the type compass where the whole N/E/S/W would spin around. Son #2 went through land navigation training and terrain map reading last year and we were talking about compass reading.

Great explanation, Mr. Surveyor, but . . . assuming her fella's needle always points north, at least when he's taking a reading . . . I don't get the whole needle-to-body alignment to get an east or west reading on that particular compass body . . . do they cover that in upper-div surveyor school, or is that something the apprentices pick up in field work?

Yeah, the whole surveying instrument thing is pretty darned interesting. That chick is either a surveyor herself, married to a surveyor or trying to bait one of us wonderful, studly surveyors into a ron-dee-voo

It's hard to imagine without the floating compass needle, just visualize a magnetized compass needle sitting on an axle centered above the "compass rose". Then visualize yourself holding the compass (somewhat level) and have the body of the compass pointed the "right" of North .... the compass needle will still be pointing North but the compass rose will be rotated such the "North" end of the needle will appear to be in the quadrant of the compass rose marked with the "N" and the "E" ... you will be facing the North East. If you turn and point the compass body in a Southerly direction (Southeast or Southwest) the South end of the needle would be what you read.

Compass reading can be really affected by exterior magnetic attractions, not only whatever ferrous metal objects you may have on your person, but also fences, tools, vehicles, etc. ... but also can be affected by such stuff as iron ore rock in the immediate vicinity. We do have that here in my neck of NE Texas. Surveyors no longer depend on magnetic compass instruments for their survey projects, but they are still handy when doing preliminary recon. Still really useful tools, after several centuries.

Oh, to make it even more complicated - Magnetic North isn't True Polar North ... the magnetic pole of the Earth is quite a ways South (Southeast as viewed from my location) so available certain charts (Isogonic charts) need to be referred to calibrate the compass for your location for accurate (respectively speaking) measurements to be made. Also, over time the magnetic pole "wanders" so that also has to be taken into account when trying to make relatively accurate, reproducible measurements.

Apologies, I should've added a laugh emoticon to the end.
I quite understand the use of an actual surveyor's compass.
I thought my veiled reference to "her fella's 'needle'" and the implication that there's no available means to procure an east or west heading . . . um, on second thought, never mind :-)

Must of seen that movie about ten times back in the day…….Interesting that Chrysler loaned eight brand new alpine white 1970 Challengers for $1.00 a day to the movie producers to promote the cars and it worked, everybody wanted one and they sold a ton of them……Of the 8 Challengers used in filming there was only one left running at the end of the movie and it was used to pull a stripped down 1967 Camaro with no engine but loaded with explosive’s made to look like the grill of a Challenger to hit the bulldozers at the ending scene and explode…….What was left of all 8 Challengers were returned to Chrysler who crushed them after angry executives found out the movie was about drug use and running from Police…….If you have a copy of the movie look carefully at the final bulldozer shot and you can tell the car isn’t a Challenger……..

This right here was me at 8 years old. I don’t know how long I laid there.

Throw some dirt on it.
Get up.
And carry on.

It seems those times have been lost forever ...

I wiped the blood from my mouth on my T shirt and moved on.

A friend of mine took a 10 speed. bike for a spin. A !0 speed wasn't a real common thing back then. We were just getting past fat tires. I told him to be careful. He said don't worry about it. Famous last words. He got that skinny ass tire caught in a crack in the cement. Went down hard, face first. I was going to tell him to shake it off. Then i realized that his front teeth were missing. It looked as painful as it probably was...........................

I'm surprised that us kids in my town lived at all....for "fun" we played "KNIGHTS" we all would carry broom sticks on our bikes. The GOAL was to put your "lance" into other KNIGHTS front spokes and launch him over handle bars of his horse. The rider remaining was the winner.

Thankfully we progressed to less dangerous antics...using my Dads cold war fallout silver radiation suit and a flashing lantern adding a set of tv rabbit ear antennas...we found something safer to do.
We had at least twenty cars stopped on side of road swearing they saw a martian.

Back in the day we used to ride our dirt bikes in the local park which had swings, slides and a 3 height chin up bar and one day Ronnie got the idea that he would get on the back of his Kawasaki 100 while another kid drove and the plan was to go under the highest bar and he was going to stand up on the rear foot pegs and grab on and do a couple flips around the bar so we all stopped and watched them speed up and at the last minute Ronnie stood up but they had failed to measure the height and the bar caught him smack in the forehead and I will never forget the sound, it was like a college baseball player hitting a fastball with an aluminum bat like a very loud BINK and Ronnie was down and out cold with a golf ball size lump forming so someone went to get his mother and tell her that he was dead but by the time she got there he was coming to saying WTF happened……It’s funny now but we really thought he was a goner for sure…….Ronnie lived and today owns a very successful towing company in Chamblee Ga and is a millionaire so maybe getting whacked in the head ain’t such a bad thing……I’m not sure how any of us lived after all the stupid stuff we did so it must be true that God watches after fools and children…….

I was running across the playground after school was out and didn’t notice the forehead-height pull-up bar. I don’t recall the sound, but I do remember the feeling.

It didn’t make me a millionaire. Guess I should have run faster.

I was on the back of my friends Garelli 125, going down an elec. co. owned trail. I saw him duck and was immediately hit by a hanging cable acrossed the chest at about 40 mph. Took me right off the bike, knocked the wind out of me. Chest hurt for a month. A little higher, who knows but I know I wouldn't have been a millionaire.............One of the dumbest things I ever did was, I worked for a German co., and we used to get skids in made of solid oak with bent metal edging They knew how to make skids. They weighed in over 120 lbs. easy. I was dragging one behind me and thought my legs were clear, so I dropped it. Legs were not clear, and I shaved the meat off of both legs from behind the knee down. Most painful thing I've felt to date.....................
