Looking to get one of these ....any thoughts on which one to get? They are comparable in price and both 308. I have a 1-4 Trijicon Acupoint to use on either.

It all depends on the intent and functionality that you're looking for. A bolt action may be undesirable if you're looking for a high rate of fire.

I like the one on top. But maybe that’s because I already have a.308 AR platform rifle. I wonder if you could easily put rings farther back on the Gunsight rifle? If not it may take a special scope to get good eye relief. But I may be missing something. My M1A SOCOM has a forward rail like that.

Depends if you want a scout rifle or a semi, simple as that.

jeepster09

Well the Trijicon scope will work great on either one. I am totally undecided. I have a number of semi autos now. I don't have a 308.
Both are short and both get great reviews. Do you think one would be more accurate at 300 yards?

I vote for the Ruger, and comparing the two photos, I'd say the Ruger would be more accurate due to the barrel being longer and it being bolt action. Keep in mind, I haven't shot either one. Also, the only semi-auto rifle I own is a Ruger 10/22.

They are BOTH Rugers! They BOTH have 16.1" barrels.:Amflag2:

I vote for getting both, if she ask’s why you had to get two just say because I can damnit!

Looks like measured accuracy was about a wash with best tested loads.
If self defense is part of the picture? I like semi-auto rate of fire.
Otherwise "Dealers Choice" :)

I have gone back and forth in my mind....I like both. Now I'm starting to think neither. I have a Mini 14, Mini 30 and a 300 Blackout AR.
Perhaps it would not be smart adding another caliber at this time. Not sure 308 would be much better than what I have...

Barth

Yup, I get it.
Have three 308 rifles myself.
But the ammo is expensive.
Only advantage might be hunting large game.
And shooting at extreme long distances.

These days, for me, adding new calibers just doesn't make sense.
I used to laugh at folks "consolidating calibers".
I'm not laughing any more :(

If I could go back in time?
I'd seriously consider limiting my guns to 9mm and 5.56 NATO.
Now I get it...

I have a S&W .223 AR, a real nice Marlin lever action 30-30 and an older Ruger 10-22 that is a tac driver so I’m well covered as far as rifles go for 2 or 4 legged predators so from here on I’m only buying all the ammo I can afford in these 3 calibers…………..

Bawanna

No scaling back on calibers for me, far too late. Anything on sale I best jump on it. If I don't have something it fits, I probably will someday, if there are enough days.

44 Mag
44 Special
357 Mag
38 Special
.380 ACP
9mm Makarov
9mm
357 Sig
40 S&W
45 ACP
.223 Remington
5.56 NATO
7.62 NATO
308 Winchester

That's just too many calibers for me to stack ammo for :(

yqtszhj
09-01-2023, 09:11 AM
I’m a minimalist I guess then. I only stack:
.22
.380
9mm
.38 special
.357 mag
.40
.45
.223/5.56
.308/7.62
12 Gauge

can’t see myself getting out of any of those calibers but I still need to thin the herd, I just can’t find anything I want to give up yet.

I get the consolidation, too. It makes range trips simpler and I don’t feel like a slave to the inanimate objects.

"Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify. Simplify."

I can see appreciating the simplicity of culling to just these: 22lr, 9mm, 12ga . . .

and maybe .357 . . .
.38sp is better for sharing the 357s with newbs . . .
everyone needs 5.56 . . .
who doesn't enjoy the occasional 45acp outing . . .
sweet looking .308 . . .
.380 would be good for occasional pocket carry . . .
CMP releasing a new batch of Garands? . . .

Well ....went to look today and ended up with NEITHER. But a MINT Sig P227 followed me home for $700 out the door price. It even already
has ORANGE Trijicon HD sights on it and SRT trigger upgrade. :yo::w00t:

Good score. Pictures or it didn’t happen. The big question is did it come with the jeepster color scheme too?

Ive come to like the Sig DA/SA metal frame pistols lately.

Finally got some pictures, threw on scale LOADED for some comparisons:

P227 45 ACP with 11 rounds/ Trigger pull= 6lbs 4oz in DA 2lbs 5oz in single action
P226 357 Sig with 13 rounds/ Trigger pull= 5 lbs 6oz in DA 2lbs 4oz inn single action
Wilson Combat 92G Centurion with 18 rounds 9mm/ Trigger pull= 5lbs 2oz in DA 2lbs 5 oz in single action
S@W 1911 SC 45ACP with 9 rounds
Ruger SP101 357 magnum 5 rounds

These are in carry rotation favoring the SP101 and the S@W due to comfort when carrying.

Out of curiosity, I just weighed my Tisas Carry. It came in at 33.90. I was surprised it was less than your Smith 1911. Course 45's are heavier and more meaningful. I've been after my son's Smith (just like yours) for years. He don't carry it but he won't part with it, probably on account of I don't have enough rubles to cover the tariff.

jeepster09
09-17-2023, 06:31 PM
Was the TISA loaded? I weighed it with mag in, loaded including one in chamber of 230 grain ammo total of 9 rounds. I was comparing actual CARRY weight.
[per web site it is 28.8 empty]

I noted that. I weighed mine as it came out of my holster with one little bitty 9mm round in the chamber and a full mag of 9. I believe they are 124gr hollow points.

Ruger SP101 357 magnum 5 rounds

Being all steel it shoots well with 357 and real tame with 38. In pocket ammo pouch I carry 10 extra rounds of both calibers.

I don't carry extra ammo, but I do stagger my ammo. First 2 shots are .357 and the next three are .38+P.

Finally got the trigger pulls checked on my SP101 [this is a factory special edition full polish with jeweled trigger and hammer].
Double action averages 8.5 and single is 2.9 lbs.

The 1911 S@W SC is 3.4 lbs.

Interesting.........I have the Wiley Clapp model and with springs, (about as low as you'd want to go on the weight) a polish. and shims, I've got mine at 6.2 double and 2.7 single. I really like the pistol. Not quite as sleek as a Smith, but I believe you've got to do a lot more work on a Smith to get it to what you can do with the Ruger. A proper set of grips to your liking and it's a darn nice revolver. Almost perfect for me as far as carry goes.

The Ruger Gunsite Scout and the Ruger SFAR are great rifles, but they offer different things depending on your preferences. If you like a classic bolt-action, the Gunsite Scout is fantastic—lightweight, easy to carry, and reliable. It's an excellent choice for hunting or just a solid-range gun.

On the other hand, the SFAR is more of a semi-auto, so if you're into quick follow-up shots or tactical use, it might suit you better. It’s built more for modern versatility. Both rifles are solid, but it comes down to whether you want that old-school bolt action or the semi-auto speed. I lean towards the Gunsite Scout for its simplicity and how easy it is to get the parts for it. Check out sites like revolver parts (https://everygunpart.com/handgun-kits/revolver.html) for more info if you are considering upgrades!

Well as I said before. I have had both [had a Scout several years ago] and prefer the SFAR. I had a 1-4 Trijicon Accupoint on it and recently switched it out to a 2.5-10 Trijicon Accupoint. Works great. [I will have to get UPDATED picture].

I baby sat about 35 AR's during my time at the PD. Never cared for cleaning those things. I have a very nice Armalite with all the stuff on it. I should take it apart and see if I remember anything. I don't think I've shot it 100 times.
Guess I should get it out and shoot it some more, cleaning is a necessary evil.

Now that sings!!! I remember years ago pondering one when they were about 700 bucks. Overnight they virtually quadrupled in price and haven't landed one yet.

State Trooper I knew saw the writing on the wall and bought 6 right before the increase. I tried unsuccessfully to talk him out of one but it never happened.
