I am looking to get another 22 handgun. I have narrowed it down to either a Smith and Wesson Model 63 or a Ruger 22/45. They are both priced similar.
HELP ME decide :2eek:

The easiest answer is to check paint supply for green and then get both.
I have the 22/45 although mine does not have the threaded barrel which is a plus if you know somebody with a suppressor. It's still a little balky and I haven't played with it enough to sort it out. I like it, feels good in hand. I need to spend more time with it, I have a few other 22's that I always seem to grab first. Always want to take them all but that can't happen. Need a place with a back porch I can shoot off.
Absolutely nothing against the revolver, looks sweet, not sure it would see as much range time unless your a revolver guy. That being said I was always a revolver guy but I lean towards cowboy revolvers.

Bingo.
I want a new 22 pistol but I just picked up an AR lower today to build an AR pistol that I’ve had parts for since 2021. Need to get me one of those foam buffer tube covers though since we can’t have braces any longer.

I had a 63 just like that and didn’t love it. It felt small in my hand, and the front sight was way too bright. Fixable stuff, I know, but it just didn’t excite me like I hoped.
The Rugers are good, my favorite is an SP101 .22

I have an SP101 .22 for the wife to shoot mostly. Was gonna get the same in 38 so she could practice with the 22. But thought it was too heavy, so ended up with a Smith 638. I get along fine with the shrouded hammer but it's easy to have the hammer get away. I tell the wife never to single action it. Wish now I'd gotten one with an exposed hammer. Can't hit well double action.

You can always slick up the triggers and make them easier to shoot in DA................

Picked up a MK4 22/45 & love it. The one-button takedown is a dream.

That one button takedown is awesome. Compared to holding your mouth right, jiggling, and standing on your head for the earlier models. Everytime I do it, it's a new learning experience.

As much as I'd like to have a Ruger SP-101 in 22 lr to compliment my all time favorite SP-101 357 mag, if it could only be one .22 handgun the Ruger 22/45 - my all time favorite. I had a slight chance of getting my hands on the SP-101 in 22 lr several years ago when doing a land survey for a close buddy but he backed out at the last minute and paid me in cash instead. I still want the old model SP-101 but I totally satisfied with the old Mark II 22/45 (bull barrel target model). It's deadly accurate as most Ruger semi-autos are right out of the box.

I have a Mark II 22/45, bull barrel, and a SP-101 in .22. The 22/45 is more accurate, and has about a 2# trigger pull. I live in a small development (12 houses), 1 acre lots. I bought the SP101 so I could shoot .22 quite round at varmits in the back yard. Not enough power to cycle the Mark II. Plus trigger is substantially heavier, even single action is about 5-6 pounds. On the plus side, it's easier to police your brass with a revolver.
So...depends on what you plan on using it for.

Having a .22 version of your centerfire is overrated. The trigger will be so different it’s not really a good trainer.

The Model 63 is a winner. Gifted mine to a grandson a few years ago.

I have a Tauruse 22 revolver, stout trigger in DA. Single action not terrible. I also have 2 LCRs one in 22lr and one in 9mm. The 22 has a noticeable heavier trigger to light of the rim fire cartridge. It became if I can shoot the LCR 22 well enough the 9 mm would be a breeze. When the 22/45s came out I really wanted one until I handled it. For me it just didn’t feel right. When the Mark4 came out I bought one to give my 1968 version a rest/ retirement.

I'm sitting (all the freaking time) on pins and needles in anticipation of forthcoming photographs. I'll wager you didn't get neither one but something different. Who's in?

Nice. Let us know how it shoots. I have limited.308 experience, only having two .308 rifles. My most noteworthy is a S&W M&P 10 that loves heavier bullets, but lighter ones not as much and groups open up some. It loves “Australian Outback 165GR gameking” rounds and will stack them in one hole at 100 yards. I bought a whole bunch at $10 a box back in 2015, it’s up to $25 a box now.
Ive heard that some of the Rugers do real well even with some of the generic .308 ammo.
One thing I learned the painful way was to make sure on a .308 that the adjustable stock is locked good before shooting. I actually removed the adjustable stock and added an A2 stock.

Dang! That hurted! Honestly never shot a 308. I’ve got my dad’s old 270 and wonder how much of a difference they would be. 38 vs 357 difference? I’d love to try one, but doubt I’d ever get one. Have gotten bitten by the “consolidating calibers” thing. Got too much ammo and too much of the same caliber in long guns (all 9mm’s and 223/556/Wylde stuff) other than pop’s old gun.
My nephew shot the 270 before I owned it and ended up with a cut like yours, along with a black eye, so I first shot it with trepidation. After a few rounds though I realized it’s not too much of a kicker. Definitely more than the 223/556 though.

Made it out range. I am very happy with results. After bore sighting this is shots 3,4 and 5 at 100 yards at Ahlman's range. First 2 shots were off the paper. One hangup on mag lips.

Not too shabby there Jeep! More so for a new to you gun. How’s the trigger?

Very good trigger! The only changes I've done is extended mag release and ambi safety, needs nothing else.

Nice rig jeep. We can't buy things like that anymore, here in our Socialist haven. For the greater good and all. :der:

Nice! Yes, I’ve never understood the oh so difficult to get to mag release on some AR’s, other than possibly avoiding accidental activation during a rough and tumble combat situation. I have one that was a custom build I bought from a guy and it has that extended release (love it) and is night & day from my others. I wish I knew who made it so I could research fitment and possibly duplicate it on the others. Who made your extended release if I may ask?
The ambi safety… are you left handed?

Just a simple Magpul brand. They are simple and not to big. I am right handed but wanted ability to work from both sides.

Colonel, so is that bolt release activated by pushing the lower serrated area by the Troy logo? Hmmmmm!
Bawanna
11-15-2023, 12:16 AM
It's activated by the lever that is on the ejection port side of the frame. Take your finger off the trigger, put it straight, push down and the bolt releases.

11-15-2023, 11:21 AM
Well that sounds a heckuva lot easier to activate than the itsy bitsy stock piece. Looks like I have 2 parts needed on a few of mine. Hopefully the wife will issue me a "bonus' soon. If not, Christmas is right around the corner!!!
