Happy New Year!

Be careful, a friend who lives in the Seattle area just posted that she spent the afternoon in the ER.
Seems she fell off her house roof while sweeping off the pine needles & other tree junk.
Broke her shoulder and wrist.
A 64 year old lady shouldn’t be doing that sort of activity..

I stopped getting on the roof a while back and hire people to clean the gutters and such because I don’t heal near as fast as I used to…..

Um, my wife likes cleaning the gutters. I don't. Last time I did hand her the leaf blower after she was already on the roof though. She's a keeper.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everybody!
Interesting dao, as my wife is the gutter cleaner too. Not that I can’t, but I put it off too long. Hoping to put in gutter guards eventually so she won’t have to.
I’m the one that blows off the roof though. She’s the one handing up the blower. Slipped once when up there. Knee cap came down directly on top of a fastener head (metal roof). Left an imprint in my knee cap shaped just like that fastener head. Smarted real good. Now I only wear a certain type of shoes up there as they are grabby. I sold metal roofs for years and always cautioned homeowner’s about walking on them, then there I go. I’ve walked hundreds of roofs without issue (other than putting a leg through a rotted area once) but never fell until on my roof. Guy I worked for got it real good one day. He fell through the roof, through the ceiling, down into the house. Surprisingly, he did not break any bones.

1. Gutter covers, one of the best investments I have ever made.

I worked construction for many years. Lots of high stuff off scaffolding, both professionally made, and jury-rigged. Even hung gutters for awhile. Never liked working up high. And I'm not as flexible as I once was so when I'm on the roof I move like the michelin man. My wife actually enjoys doing gutters. So, being a good husband who knows the value of a happy wife, I let her :D

I've always wondered about these. When the screens fill up don't they allow the water to back up under the roofing and down the backside of the gutter, against the barge board (fascia)?

My dad did that back in the day. Helping on a roof, went thru, thru the ceiling and ended up sitting beside the lady owner of the house on the couch. Didn't get hurt, neither of them. If he'd been a bit to one side, it would have been ugly. Never did tell me if the owner was cute or anything, wondered about that to this day.
I never cared working the high stuff either, I could climb a tree or anything where I'm using my hands, but walking walls, or even a rickety ladder, scaffolding etc, wasn't my thing.

Luckily, I have decks. Put a small ladder up and the farthest you'd fall is about 8 ft...............I've kept the trees away from the house, so I don't get much gutter junk. I wouldn't go up on the roof anymore anyway. Got a metal roof a few years back, and if you slip or slide, there's really nowhere to grab, and no real friction. Never liked heights either..................At one point, I was installing security systems. Used to go in and prewire commercial and residential. Lots of heights, lots of ladders, lots of walking on 2x4's. Lots of attics. I was about 30 ft. up, and a ladder gave out on me. My first reaction was to try and grab the beam above me. I was a split second too late and just tore out a nail before I started falling. All that went through my mind was if I was going to land on the ladder and snap my ankles. Pros: Landed on my feet with a jar and managed to land straddling the ladder. Cons: When the ladder fell, it knocked a sawhorse right underneath me, which was at the perfect height, well let's just say that I couldn't quite straddle that horse. I walked kind of funny for a few weeks..........................

I haven’t had any reason to get up on our roof in years, fortunately. I did it so slow and carefully, no way I was going to get a major injury over something I don’t really need to do.

The one roof experience I remember was about 1990 when I put up a ladder to paint a two story window and my 4 year old son decided to climb up to see what I was doing and I told him to get down immediately which he did but in the process he knocked the ladder over and went back inside while I sat up there waiting for the boss to come home from her hair appointment to put the ladder back up again so I could get down…….My son was fine, he just went inside and watched cartoons on TV but I will always have to hear about that story forever…….

In a continued effort to utilize every possible square inch of the man cave I put a rack (made it in junior high) in my window sill. I kind of like to look at some of my treasured stuff rather than leave in a dark safe.

The top one was all hand made by my wife's great great great grandfather. The story goes he was a Swedish gunmaker and the king of Belgium got him somehow and made guns for them. It's a side by side around 12 ga or a little less. Wife's dad sanded all the metal down when he was a kid. Dumb arse. I left it in the raw as I got it not wanting to mess it up. Then decided it wouldn't hurt nothing so I cold blued it. Much better. Imagine it was originally browned but who knows for sure.
The bottom is a Winchester lever action 10 gauge. A 1901 model. All complete. It was in my grandparents hall closet as long as I can remember. Rumored to have come across the country in a covered wagon although I got nothing to prove that. Also a Winchester 32 that allegedly made the same trip. I have it also.
