It was a fun little car and handled better than one would think............I believe that they won some kind of award in 73 for having the most comfortable bucket seats. I had a friend who owned 2 of them. One was the Levi Edition.

AMC PACER:
Now this had to be one of the WORST cars ever made. I worked at an AMC dealer when they were out.....they were plagued with problems.
Valve covers leaked like a sieve [no gasket, just silicone], gas tanks rusted out on top due to recess made in it to clear body, trapped water. Door hinges broke due to huge heavy doors....I could go on and on.

I also worked at an AMC dealership a couple years before I bought the Gremlin. I think AMC had that valve cover " issue " the entire time they were in business. A friend of mine bought an Eagle and had to use high temp sealer every few thousand miles on his valve covers. I couldn't believe that the covers were plastic. They expanded and contracted constantly They definitely could have found a different area to shave a few bucks.

I was parts and service director at White Bear Quality Imports years ago. The dealer sold Maserati, Alfa Romeo and YUGO.
I thought the owner was absolutely nuts for selling all 3 on the same sales floor. Leon, the owner wanted me to drive a YUGO for my demo.
I refused! Instead I got to pick any used car I wanted. I ended up driving the Maserati Quadraport. Back to Yugo story.....The importer of Yugo,
out of Baltimore, tried to get me to work for Yugo and move to Yugoslavia and work at the factory. They flew me out to Headquarters and drove me around in Limo.
I was told my kids would be able to go to school at the American Embassy and all expenses would be paid. They wanted me to help in AMERICANIZING the Yugo. I came REAL CLOSE to accepting and had better judgement and turned it down. Approximately 6 months later Yugo went bankrupt due to the importers embezzling money. I WOULD OF ENDED UP STUCK IN YUGO LAND! After that Yugo's were selling at our dealership for "buy one get one free".

I don't know about the Yugos, but when my fiancée and I drove my 1985 Audi 4000 Quattro through East Germany to Berlin and then over to East Berlin, the most "popular" car there was the Trabant... another fine German automobile... East German, and arguably not as good as my West German Audi, but the prevalent brand we would see. Look at my collage from that visit at the Palast der Republik, or something like that, where we parked and went to the big building where there was a cafeteria and we ate lunch. 21360
My red Audi was probably the only one there and 99% of the others were Trabants.
I don't know where I was trying to go with this. I'm old and it's late at night after a bit of wine. Maybe I got confused over Commie Cars.
It was quite an experience and I'm so glad that we were able to go... visit a Communist country... another country comes to mind in that respect, but I never thought Germany would be reunited... and become a Western Democracy, though Merkel reversed that quite a bit by allowing, no mandating that over a million "migrants or refugees be admitted during her reign.
Now we have upwards of 10-11 million "migrants" among us, and we don't know how many are terrorists and saboteurs with ulterior motives, but I digress and change the direction... whatever it was.

Man has technology advanced engine design and output. Back in the day if a V8 gave you 1hp per cubic inch it was special. Fast forward 50 years and we have some 4 bangers that could beat most any of the muscle cars. I don't know what the 401 looked like but that's not a lot of horsepower for that displacement. Not to say it wouldn't make the Gremlin pleasingly squirrelly, but those figures are a bit anemic. By one comparison, my truck's 5.3L (325ci), puts out 355hp and 383lbs-ft. of torque. I don't know if they measured at the rear wheels back then, and they may have. But I'm pretty sure that today's testing is done at the crank. That would make quite a difference, but regardless engineers have done wonders with engines in the last 20 years.

My '69 Javelin had the 290ci in it. Felt ok, and was able to get out of its own way, but not much more than that. Still though it had enough torque to where I kept stripping the Desoto splined hubs on the rear axles. AMC bought a LOT of parts from other manufacturers and cobbled them together to make some pretty cool machines.

No kidding, I bought a used 92 Jeep Comanche pickup which was the last year AMC owned the Jeep brand and that thing was a mismatch of parts made into a truck…….It had the Iron Duke 4 cylinder GM motor with a Mitsubishi 4 speed manual transmission and a Ford carburetor and rear axle……..Trying to buy parts for it was a hit or miss deal at best and sometimes the NAPA guy would scratch his head and say, are you sure it’s a 92 because the book says they don’t exist but it was a cool little truck and I drove it until it would not go another mile……Learned my lesson and bought a 2002 Silverado and she’s still running just fine……

Had a 67 SS Camaro 4sp, posi, glass packs - in high school.
It was a blast to drive, but even then, it didn't really feel fast.
Many years later I rented a Shelby GT-H (320 HP 5.0 5sp auto).
It was quick, but still didn't pin you to your seat.
Then I rented a Mustang GT with the 5.0 Coyote 460 HP motor and 10 sp auto.
Now that car was fast :cool:

Quarter mile times really tell the tale.
Although part of that involves tire/transmission/suspension technology.
In the 70s a mid 13 second car was considered fast.
That late model Mustang GT felt like a low 12 second car :eek:

Yep…..For my 40 year anniversary gift at the big phone company I selected a 65 inch LG Smart TV and it’s now on the wall in the den and the picture is great but the problem is it didn’t come with much instructions such as how to watch normal channels or maybe the ball game but it gives you the option of about 400 streaming apps that cost God knows how much to watch mostly crap and my wife who is really smart and computer savvy can’t figure out out how to operate the stupid remote so I have to wonder how advanced we’ve become that we can’t even watch the evening news on TV anymore……..I’m so confused……

I'm a professional Software Engineer designing and developing programs.
I've actually designed online systems that people use every day.
You are absolutely correct in that software should be intuitive and easy to use by design.
There's no good reason I can think of why these devices are so complicated.
It seems like every new team that's supposed to upgrade some interface
feels the need to rename and/or move everything around (like that's an improvement?).
Microsoft is notorious for this :mad:

IMHO the best designed stuff you can just pick up and use :cool:
