Friend sent me a pic of his 2005 model P45. Pics show some minor scratches on both sides of slide around slide lock. More than likely, scratches are from careless take down methods, but my question, is the black finish on this five year old P45 the same as the black diamond finish Kahr now uses?

thanks for reply. I need to look at that gun in person. That black diamond is not supposed to scratch.

Well I don't know much about it, but I know that at some point they had carbon steel slides that were black. Not sure if that's what you're looking at or not.

Also, I understand there was a period of time before black diamond when stainless steel slides were coated with other finishes with mixed results. At least if the slide is stainless, it won't be prone to rust. Nothing wrong with blued steel. They just require a little more care to keep looking good.

I don't think the P45 ever came with a carbon steel slide. Since inception the .45 line has had stainless.

To my knowledge the only carbon steel used was in the early K and E models.

If one will do some research in to the dlc finish that kahr uses on their slides, I think they will find that the rockwell hardness is almost twice the hardness of a kahr regualr stainless stainless slide.

So to me what that should tell you is if you indeed scratch a dlc finished slide, you certainly would have also harmed your stainless slide even worse. I think it is just that we might see the scratchs in a dlc finsih slide over a stainless slide. I have been told my some gun aficiados that if one will take a pencil eraser that most all of those little scratchs in the dlc finish slides will rub right off. Give me the dlc finish any day.
