View Full Version : How old are we? Part two.
Dietrich
10-03-2010, 11:23 AM
It`s been about a year since we did this and we`ve added a lot of new friends and some old ones have drifted away. If I remember correctly, our average age a year ago was around 51.So,if you aren`t bothered by anyone knowing your age, here goes. How old will you be when November 30th,2010 rolls around? I`ll let everyone know the average age of the respondents on December 1st.Please state your age in years [not dog years Bawanna] not in other measurements of time.If you don`t want your age to be public knowledge, send it to me in a PM.It will not be divulged to anyone. The deadline for entries will be midnight on November 30th.I`ll start off and say my age is 59.Hope to hear from you ,Dietrich.:yo:

Well put me down for 56. Or 392 in wheelchair years.
Another excellent idea Dietrich as usual. I think are average is gonna drop considerably this time around.

Does it make you feel better to know that I probably won't live to see 40 at the rate I'm going, and that I quit counting at 24? BTW if I hear one more old fart bag on me because I don't have their years...
Bawanna
10-03-2010, 07:14 PM
At what age does Old fart status kick in exactly. I suspect the seniors are just jealous of your youth. I know I would be if I was a senior. I expect its too late to quit counting now although it couldn't hurt. I wish I'd thought of quiting counting when I was 24. 40 was the biggy for me, lots of stuff went down hill fast starting right there. Reading glasses, industrial strength hearing aides, the chair came along about then, yeah, slip around 40 if you got the chance. It's a good number to avoid.
You can comfort yourself in that you've had probably more lifes experiences in the corp and stuff than most half again your age.
Let me know on that Old fart age thing, I'm gonna try and skip that one too.

64 and still counting and riding the Harley Roadking as much as ever. I guess I'm still one of those boomers that think it's all in your head how old you are.
To me it's just a number. I have tools that are older than 30, and know people who are 30 that are older than me. Just ask them they'll tell ya.:D
Maybe you just have to be around a while to understand that age is not counted in years. It's all about attitude that you've aquired along the way that makes you stay young or perhaps get old.;) Your call!!!

70, but as my recent birthday card said "I'm really 18 with 52 years experience". When I turned 40, then 50, then 60 - each time I said to myself "No big deal, I wonder if I will be able to say that at 70 ?". The answer - "No big deal".

Ain't it funny how you write back and forth and converse with everybody, ya kind of put a picture in your mind of what a person looks like, short, tall, blonde, black , bald. Fat, skinny, old, young.
And then you do a survey like this and you realize your not even on the same planet let alone close.
Seems like the age average is still gonna be a little lower than the first time but hearing of these more mature fellas is making me feel younger all the time at least for short periods of time between rest spells and naps.
Funny I always got along better with mature folks than young or even my own age and it seems to get even better all the time.
Old guys rule. I hope to be one someday.
ok bye.

The Golden Years
As we get older we sometimes begin to doubt our ability to "make a difference" in the world. It is at these times that our hopes are boosted by the remarkable achievements of other "seniors" who have found the courage to take on challenges that would make many of us wither.
Harold Schlumberg (see picture below)is such a person.
QUOTE FROM HAROLD
I've often been asked, 'What do you old folks do now that you're retired?
“Well...I'm fortunate to have a chemical engineering background and one of the things I enjoy most is converting beer, wine and whiskey into urine. I do it nearly everyday and I really enjoy it.”
Harold is an inspiration to us all.

4,796,100 = 176 -.8x
4,795,924 = -.8x
(4,795,924)/(-0.8) = x

That didn't help.
SQRT(2190) = 176 - .8x
(46.7974 - 176)/-.8 = x
(-129.2)/-.8 = x
161.5 = x
I'm skeptical. :D But I think we're getting closer.

I'm not feeling any older but I'm feeling a whole lot stupider by the second. Does all this chicken scratch actually mean anything in the real world. I put away my pacifier and I'm fondling my 25' Stanley tape measure. I feel much more secure holding it in my hand at times like this.

35 sounds a lot better. I've probably forgotten 99% of my BS in Mathematics. College was the last time I used most of it... 1972. An HP calculator was the size of an IBM Selectric typewriter. It was much later before there were even the simplest of LED-screened hand calculators. Our computer science classes used punched-card decks with the IBM 360... which needed a whole room with the large disk drives and associated equipment. If we had had PC's back then, I would have stayed with computer science, but I just finished in Math. I still use the "B.S." part of my degree.:D

Thats pretty much it except it has a Harley motor. I'm sick of even conventional chairs running out of juice. I'm totally dependent on batteries, hearing aid, chair, van door controls, tactical flashlight. I switch back and forth between a power chair and a manual. I actually don't mind the manual, at least I know if I'm breathing it will go and its about the only exercise I get anyhow. The power setup is nice for carrying stuff around, you don't have to put it in your lap and drop it 12 times on the way to your destination.
I gotta wonder how a guy gets into that contraption. I have seen video of a similar one going in creek beds and thru the woods. I'd dig having something like that. I'd be out in the woods again in a heart beat for sure. Thats where I truely belong anyhow.

You had calculators? When I graduated in 1964 with a BS in EE and a math minor, all we had were slide rules. There were no computers to speak of, ie no computer science. I'll admit that today I use the BS a lot more than the EE or math.

Jeez... I didn't have one... the Math Department had one. I was going to major in physics but didn't want to take the 101-type course. I took the one that required Calculus as a co-requisite. That was a laugh... they were using differential equations and didn't emphasize "regular math." We used slide rules and they were handy for cribbing formulas. I can't remember when the first four-function simple calculators came out later, but they cost over a hundred bucks and were pretty flimsy, but STATE OF THE ART! Years later I got a TI-59 programmable, magnetic card-reading hand-held calculator that I used a bit for navigation... mainly to compute motion of bodies for celestial navigation to adjust our lines of position from shooting stars and planets with the sextant... at about 440 Knots True Airspeed... fun. I still have that thing and the print cradle I later picked up... late 70's(?)
[I was a ham radio operator and got a VHF SSB radio that I hooked into one of the ECM antennas on the BUFF. At 30,000 feet plus, I could really reach out... aeronautical mobile.]
I decided to switch to Computer Science... for about a year. We had a guy from the business world drafted to be a teacher, which he wasn't, and my basic assembly language class sucked. I switched to Math for a major inside a year... since I had been advancing in Math all along. I got my minor waived or got Arabic substituted because I had a year of intensive training in the Air Force.
Almost ten years later i had a Radio Shack TRS-80 with 16 kilobytes RAM and learned BASIC on my own. It was kind of fun doing some programming in that... there weren't many applications and no GUIs.
To change the subject again... if you are considering a used Kahr, it should be a really good deal, because you probably won't have any warranty, and for CCW it's hard to beat the PM9.
Enough rambling for now! Later.

Therein lies the problem - he wants $579 for a used PM9, which is only a few dollars less than a new one from Bud's. That's not a good deal, but he also wants $689 for a NIB pm9 which isn't good either. I really hate to do another transfer through him after two last week. I checked another Atlanta store I use occasionally, but they were even worst at $729. I did get warranty work and shipping [gap and notch] from Kahr on my used PM45, but that was under Ian, and may not work now.
