As you may have read already, I am a new forum member and new Kahr PM9 owner. I bought a pearce grip extension, and 100 rounds of hot military "ball m882" ammo, I bought at my local LE equipment store.(I am a retired LEO) The salesman told me that the ammo would help break in the gun faster.

He also recommended after break in, to use the Speer 124 grain Gold Dot short barrel hollowpoints for a self defense round. What do you all think of this advice. Thanks.

I agree with the Speer Gold Dot carry ammo if it runs well in your gun. I have mixed emotions about the hot military ammo for break in. Kahrs are ok with +P no problem, I'm not certain how hot that ammo really is.
I'd not waste any of the Gold Dot or any expensive carry ammo till you've put a bunch of rounds thru it and make sure it's running.
Then try your choices for carry ammo and see what works best.
Generally Kahrs are not ammo sensitive but I feel better running a few to make sure they get along.

I like to practice with the M882 ammo as it feels similar to higher priced carry ammo. After shooting the RWS that Walmart recently stocked, I'd put it in the same catagory as the M882... good for practice.

I can't see one round speeding up any "break in" time. I can't see any benefit in increased pressure. I suspect shooting any ammo will suffice.

I tried the short barrel Gold Dot in my P2000sk, but decided it wasn't what I wanted. It burns really fast and seem to influence recoil more than I desired or expected. I wasn't as accurate with it as I am with the other rounds I routinely carry in that pistol, (Hornady TAP, Ranger T+P, PDX-1). Your experience may vary. I never tried it in a Kahr to my recollection.

I think that Bawhiney might be onto something there. Shoot it a bunch with ball, not even the hot stuff, then find a carry load you like, shoot that some and go with it. Most of these new hollow points will serve you well. As he said these little guys aren't known to be terribly ammo sensitive. Best advice, shoot it a bunch, shoot it some, rinse and repeat.

My defense ammo of choice is Federal HST. If you hurry you can get it at Kyles Gunshop (http://www.kylesgunshop.com/) for $33 (box of 50). I've dealt with him a few times and always a pleasure.

to that short barrel gold dot reducing muzzle flash due to a faster burning powder etc. I have never seen it around here or heard pro or con on it...
