View Full Version : Dipping front sight on trigger pull - NOT trigger control issue

Folks,
just picked up a Kahr PM9 - beautiful little 9mm and will serve me well along with my j-frame as a backup.
Anyway, noticed something interesting upon repeated dry firing - upon the release of the striker, the front sight kept dipping. At first I thought it was a trigger control issue but I have many long DAO guns that I have no issue with.
Tried it with various braces, rests and two handed holds, and still the persistent front sight dip.
Perplexed, I looked at the side/frame relationship from the side while slowly pulling the trigger and noticed that just at the moment of release, the entire slide dipped forward. Holding the gun up sideways in front of a light source, you can see some light between the frame and lower edge of the slide towards the front half of the gun. Pulling the trigger shows an obvious movement/dipping of the slide towards the front.
Now, with the striker 'cocked', there is some vertical play of the slide; if I push down on the slide first, then pull the trigger, the amount of slide/front sight dip is reduced.
Any ideas on what's going on?
thanks!
Dave

I don't see any motion, nor can I get any motion as you described on my PM40.

Dave,
I noticed the same issue with my CW45. Even when held extremely still the front sight does in fact dip when I break the tension.

The slide will move when the striker is released - every action will have an equal and opposite reaction.
Do this with the frame clamped in a vice, or the dust cover planted firmly against a desk. I'm quite sure that it won't "dip" when this is done.
Like it or not, just because you have other long DA pull guns and don't have that problem with them, that's irrelevant unless they are all Kahrs. The Kahr platform is totally different.

Well, like it or not, the slide movement is real even with the frame/dust cover properly secured.
However, in reality, I'm not sure it this movement will actually happen, as the slide going into battery under the forces of recoil (as simulated by a sling shot or slide stop release on an empty gun of course) does 'push' the slide forward and down, taking up the 'slack' so upon striker release, there is very minimal to no movement.
Just saying that I wish the slide/barrel lockup was a bit tighter. When the striker is cocked, the slide/barrel unit CAN be moved to a degree which is commensurate with the amount of slide/front sight dip upon striker release.
So, maybe just the first shot after clearing leather will have this issue....
Dave.

With any polymer frame/striker fired pistol that I have ever encountered, the slide WILL move to some extent when dryfiring. I have never found it to effect live fire. Steel striker guns are much less sucseptable to this.
With the Kahrs, I DID notice there was a generous POI shift for the first shot when the slide was manually racked or released by the slide release. I simply loaded my carry magazine with the top round of range ammo, loaded it, fired one shot, and topped off the magazine with two rounds.
When I did this there was NO change in POI for any of the shots.

The hole in the chest was from my first outing with my Kahr T40. The hole in the abdomin was from my 1911 that I used to compete with. Distance was about 15-20 yards if my memory serves me correct.
I wouldn't worry about it ;)

Mike why do you have to shoot them in the jewels? Isn't it enough that you ruin their day, but to shoot them in the Jimmy. ;)

Yeah, jlottmc, can't you see that's the tummy area? :bump2: And that jeep45238 actually completely shot off the "jimmy" area and even made a nice straight line across the whole sheet just to show off?
P.S. All kidding aside, to all vets in these waning moments of this sacred day: Thank you for your service to our country, gentlemen and gentlewomen, and thank you for sacrificing and fighting for my freedom that I too often take for granted.
