View Full Version : Magazines for my new CW9

I am picking up my new CW9 on thursday. Before I bought the pistol I did a lot of research and it looks like some folks are having problems with the Kahr 9mm magzines. Rounds falling out and nosediving into the feed ramp when loading the first round.
I saw a youtube video where the person showed his 7 round 9mm mag and how the top round would tip and not spring back. So he recommends getting some promag magazines.
Anyone have experience with promags in their CW9?
I traded my Keltec PF9 in on the cw9. It was a good gun but I could only get a 2 finger grip on it. Shot well with a firm 2 handed grip, but I would get some FTF's with a one handed grip. I am hoping the CW9 will be less finicky about a tight grip since I should be able to get 3 fingers on the grip.

I think the key is proper cleaning And break in. Follow the instructions in the tech section, use the lube guide for the gun, take the mags apart clean, no oil for the mags. Break that puppie in and have fun!!! I guess what I am saying is I know two other people with cw9's we all use factory mags and not one problem.

First off, I recommend you read the manual when your CW9 arrives. It will tell you how to load the gun. If you follow instructions you will have few problems, if any.
Secondly, the top round can strip off in a mag holder. Do a search and you'll find it a recent topic of discussion.

+1 on reading the owners manual. Most people don't even open the manual, let alone follow the opperating instructions.

I have not had any for the kahr but I did have pro mags for a S&W the worked ok but I did get FTF alot, prolly 1-20. I also had the slide not lock back a couple times. so for target probably fine, for carry I would not chance it.

A few things need updating in the manual. One is the method of loading the pistol. Kahr now recommends locking the slide back, inserting a full magazine, and then using the slide lock release to chamber a round.
Read the F.A.Q.'s at kahr.com:
Kahr Arms / Q & A (http://www.kahr.com/OR-4.html#q10)
There's a lot of information available at the Kahr Site:
Kahr Arms | Site Map (http://www.kahr.com/sitemap.html)
There are videos and magazine reviews and tests of all weapons and you can find a lot of good information like ammo the testers used and real velocities and accuracy.

Thanks for the replies....If I have trouble with the factory mags I will give the promags a try and post my results.
I saw the posts about loading from a locked slide that is why I was asking about the promags.
The person that made the video said you do not need to load from a locked back slide with them and you could ride the slide and it would still chamber. But I have heard the promags may be unreliable so I thought I would ask if anyone is using them in their Kahr. :)

Historically folks around here have had the best luck staying with factory Kahr mags. For carry use I would use nothing but the real thing myself.
Certainly no harm in trying the promags of course but I'd not carry them.
As far as loading from slide lock or sling shoting, you can do that with Kahr mags also after the break in and in some cases right out of the box. To me that isn't a magazine issue but a operator, slide frame fit.
My K series and PM45 both will load easily either slow let down, sling shot or slide lock. I normally use the slide lock as recommended but they all work.

I tried Promag for my K40 and P40, had a lot of problems. Never tried any with my CW9.
I would stay with factory mags, may cost a little more but they work the best.

First the subject of promags..... I have tried their hi-cap mags for a couple of Beretta applications, and they weren't worth the 15 bucks @ I paid for them. Actually they didn't even make good paper weights.
Now, the 9mm follower issue......
Most of us never really learned of or considered to inspect the actual shape of a 9mm brass casing. I admit myself that I didn't learn this until 4-5 years ago. Unlike most other "acp" rounds, the casing of the 9mm is not straight walled. Try a real simple experiment: lay out 7-8 rounds of 9mm on a flat surface in the same configuration they would stack in a magazine. Make sure the sides of the brass are making complete contact with the adjacent rounds. You shouldn't even need a straight edge along the cartridge bases to see that they tend to make a curved line. When they are forced into a straight line (back wall of the mag tube), this tends to make the bullet end appear to be "unsupported". With a full magazine the problem tends to be more pronounced.....lay out 20 rounds of 9mm in the "experiment" and you will most certainly see a curve forming. A fixed angle follower (pretty standard) in a straight backed magazine (haven't seen a curved one yet...although I can dream) would seem to me to be the culprit in feed issues on many varieties of 9mm handguns. Must not be a big issue or they would have adopted the spring hinged follower exclusively for the 9mm firearms. I wonder if Kahr might experiment with a spring hinged follower that might reduce the problems of the tapered 9mm cartridges?
Anyway....just my musings.....

It looks like the Kahr magazine have the cartridges at a steeper angle also than an other guns I own, that seems to exagerate that effect.
I picked up my CW9 today and I am very impressed with the machine quality and design. Took it apart and cleaned it today...The bore was dirty and there was a lot of small plastic shavings in the slide rails. Plenty of oil on it from the factory and they sure polish the feed ramp up nicely!
I tried chambering some snap caps and some gold dots and did not have any problems unless I rode the slide.
If I have time I will shoot it tomorrow and post how it went.

From the reviews I've run across the Promag magazines have had some serious problems with FTF and the slide locking back when there are still rounds in the mag. Not saying I have any experience with them; it's just what I've read.

Thanks for the input on the promags guys. I shot my CW9 and had no problems...slingshotting the slide it went into battery every time. My does not need to be loaded from a locked slide. :)
I ordered 2 more Kahr mags. I found a place on the net selling them for about $30 each.

Good to read that you ordered two more K mags. Pro's I've used have been hit or miss (with most going into the miss column).
I've also been able to load by quickly racking the slide at the range but after I clean the gun and reload for carry, I've always used the slide release on a full mag.
