Thanks TD2K for reminding me of another gun I want. I have heard that shooting shotshells out of a rifled barrel shotgun is a no, no but it's ok to shoot slugs out of a cylinder bore barrel. Do I have that right? Is there any rifleled barrel shotgun that will accomdate shot too?

I believe the reason shotshells aren't recommended in a rifled barrel is mainly due to the fact that the shot pattern will be unpredictable, in part due to deformartion of the spherical shot pellets, and part due to the friction of the rifling. The steel rifling won't be damaged. per se, by the lead shot, but will experience a considerable amount of lead fouling....i.e. much more time with the solvents and brushes.

From what I hear and read, the new Taurus (not a fan) long gun version of the "judge", a six shot revolver 45 lc/.410 shotgun has interchangeable choke tubes and a rifled barrel. I think (again no personal experience) at least one of the choke tubes is designed with something similar to "straight rifling grooves" to attempt to stabalize the shot pellets.....not sure.

Unless I were in a state that required shotguns for deer (which I'm not, thankfully) I would have no use for a rifled shotgun barrel. Just my opinion though.

I think I'd just get another barrel. If you had one barrel that did both shot and slug I suspect it would do neither very well.

Sort of like the tools that do the work of a 186 different tools. They do all that, unfortunately they don't do any of them as well as each individual tool and it takes you 4 days to switch modes or longer if you've forgotten how.

Sorry so negative, must have slid into the wrong snow bank. We're talking cold mutha around here today and tonight.

yes, I hear you are in for some negative temps there tonight. Reminds me of my days in the frozen tundra of Green Bay. I know what you're saying about those one tool does all things. I kinda thought that about the shotgun barrels but since I don't really have much experience with shotguns, I thought I'd ask. I'd still like another 12 guage with wood stock though and am currently in the hunt for one.

the great thing about shotguns IS the ability to swap barrels in just seconds (or minutes). You can have that rifled slug barrel for the "big stuff", a 26-30" smooth bore for birds and small game, and a 18" barrel for the "social events". It can be an inexpensive way to cover a lot of bases, but like Bawanna said, the right tool for the job. You can occassionally run across some really good deals on barrels for the more popular guns on the market and outfit yoursel pretty well. Like a few of the pistols on the larket that offer interchangeable barrels of 9mm, .40 S&W and .357 Sig, as well as .22 cal uppers - all fittied for the same platform.

Personally, I think the idea of having multiple barrels for the same shotgun is a great idea. Also the take down single shot long guns offering a rifle barrel and a shotgun barrel are wonderful ideas for storing in the zippered carry case with a box of ammo for each in your vehicle. It's a shame there don't seem to be many real quality offerings for those.

oh, and for the record, it hit 80 degrees here in Stumpwater, Texas today, but Bawanna's cold front is supposed to get here in a couple of days and by Saturday a.m. we're expecting upper 20's. We need to build a taller wall on the North side(s) of Texas.... I hate cold.

Wow, that'll be a shock, go from 80 to 20 in a matter of days. It's below 10 out right now and the east side is -12 in a couple places. It normally don't get that cold around here.

I'm ready for summer.
