View Full Version : Torn primers

I have been shooting a variety of factory ammo, federal, winchester, remmington, and have noticed the primers have a distinct tadpole mark on them some even have had what looked to be a tear. Now I know these light locked breach pistols cycle fast but is this what everyone is expreiencing? It seems a slightly stronger recoil spring would be an improvement.

This can happen in any semiauto, but is pretty much the norm for striker fired guns (Google image search "Glock primer swipe"). This occurs becuase there is no rebound spring for the striker as there is for the firing pin in many hammer fired guns.

I may be wrong but I seem to recall even seeing this in the owners manual. I call it primer smear, and believe the cause is just what Greg described. I've not heard of it being an issue for any reason.
I do admit that even though I read about it I was concerned about it at first also. No longer give it a thought.

gosh I hate words that are spelled the same, but have different meanings and different pronunciations..... the use of the word "tear" in the original post could have two totally different meanings, but in context either could be appropriate. One possibility is the intent was to express the shape of the primer dimple as "tear shaped" (which it could be described as such), as pronounced "teer". The other possibility (as I would assume to be the intent as expressed in the thread title by the use of the word "torn") would be that the primer body itself was showing a breach, or tear...as if pronounced "tare". Assuming the latter to be the case, as in the primer surface is being torn into, I would suspect that the striker either has a burr or other sharp edge, or the striker may be longitudinally out of spec.
If the striker is the culprit of ripping into the primer casing, I would certainly call the mother ship and ask for a replacment striker.... or at least describe the issue with them. As said, tear (teer) shaped primer strikes are normal, tearing (taring) the primer isn't.
Had to clear that whole word thing up:D

Exactly correct once again Surv. Its another one of those lines that can be read and interpreted a couple ways. I assumed he was experienceing the norm which as you pointed out may not in fact be the case.
I don't jump too much in recent years but I obviously hopped to an indefinite conclusion in this case. I shall report to the flogging post to amend my ways.
Your good dude.

hey the only way I caught any possibility of ambiguity (wow....I finally got to use that word in a sentence) was re-reading the thread title...otherwise I would have assumed the whole issue was the teardrop shape. I've been downright spanked on some sites for honest mistakes in interpreting discussion topics

We try to avoid the spanking scenario's around here near as I can tell. A few tried to swat me but I bobbed and weaved and avoided the contact.
As for that ambiquity thing, glad it panned out for ya, I'm gonna have to borrow Jocko's dictionary and try to get a grasp on the meaning of that. Could be a curse though on account of I'll be wanting to use it in a sentence too.
I recall in an early grade in school, each day the teacher passed around a dictionary, wasn't Jocko's, this one had big words and stuff. We each had to close our eyes, flip it open and put our finger on a page and use what ever word was closest to our finger in a sentence.
My first word was diahrea, I refused to play fair anymore and used my own words after that.

I knew it, there must be two different kind of dictionaries that can make the same word ambiguityess?
Now I know what the indian meant when he said white eye speak with forked tongue.

If you think Kahr's firing pin marks look strange, you should see a Glock's mark. It looks like it was fired by a hammer & chisel & a sharp one at that.
