I have been doing a little research on 9mm reloading supplies, and am thinking this might get me started off in the right direction.

1000 SPEER 9mm 124gr Gold Dot Hollow point bullet : Supplies at GunBroker.com (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=204531410)

9mm brass SPEER 1000ct. : Supplies at GunBroker.com (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=203691159)

5,000 CCI Small Pistol Primers : Supplies at GunBroker.com (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=204195504)

I need to see what brand and kind of powder the above will require to perform properly.

Please let me know what you gents think and if I am headed off in the wrong direction.

Thanks,
Steve

Theres really no wrong direction, well I guess there is or could be.

Myself I never buy brass except for hard to find or not plentiful stuff like 45 Colt around our parts. I'd just buy the cheapest good quality brass cased factory stuff and then shoot it and then start the reloading.

The case is the most expensive component in the reloading process.

I've never loaded 9 so I'm not up on any good recipes or preferred powders and stuff.

Check closely when ordering primers and powder on line also. Many times they hit ya with a hazardous fee that makes it almost just as cheap to buy locally. I know this is true on powder and probably on primers also.

What Mr.B said, and
Judging from your signature, I think you might be interested in these bullets.
They're not HP but put nice holes in paper and make steel go clang.

Precision Delta - Competition Ammunition (http://www.precisiondelta.com/detail.php?sku=B-9-115-FMJ)

If you're just starting out the best thing to do is try and find a mentor.
Easy to find at the range, re-loader's are proud of their ammo and will display it...and when not shooting, are always looking down at the ground:rolleyes:

If your plan is to save money, you won't, and for most, "to save money" is just wifespeak for a "new hobby".
Equipment?...pick a color.
With Lee being the low end of the cost spectrum and Dillon the other end, it's kind of a ford/chevy thing.

As for powder, for 9mm you can't go wrong with W-231 (HP-38 is the same) and Hodgdon site for some starting data.
Read through the mega-thread as there is some good info there.
If you are going to shoot a lot, consider a progressive as you can disconnect the index and run it like a single stage.
That way there's not too much going on at once.
I wrote about some Lee equipment in another thread here...check it out.

Check out Berry's MFG.com for bullets. There are several good places to get a deal on bulk bullets. I suggest you start with Unique or 231 powder. Lot of data available for both. Let us know how much you think you will shoot/week/month and folks here can better suggest presses to fit your need. Dillon Square Deal B is a good starter progressive press. A little expensive for some needs but a great press and will last for many years. It comes complete and includes dies.
Some of us drink the blue koolaid and some drink the red but you can't go wrong either way.
Whay ever you do, when you start loading GO SLOW and pay attention to what you are doing. It ain't rocket science but you need to watch everything, all the time.
Listen to the folks here, they know what they are doing, and welcome.

Thanks for the input.

My turn to work the night shift this week, starting tomorrow night, and all I seem to get done during the day is sleep.

Getting too old to work these 12 hour shifts along with the hour commute each way, but happy to have a job.

Will look into further on my next set of days off.

Thanks again,
Steve

That looks like a great start to me! I can see your planning on reloading the cases more then once by your primer count. Do a google search on the powder companies and you can get some good info on what to expect from different powders. Hodgdons, Alliant, and Vihtavuori are good places to start. The plated Berry bullets and the good Montana Gold bullets are also good for cheap practice. Actually with the price of 9mm ammo I just use the cheap stuff for a day at the range, but reloading is rewarding too!

Also I would recommend getting carbide dies if you don't have them, its way easier to use as you don't have to mess with case lube. Also if your loading with a single stage press you don't have to bell the case mouths and then you don't have to taper crimp the cases. If you do only crimp the case enough to take the bell out, over crimping just makes the bullet looser in the case as strange as it seems. Better yet, just load a few dummy rounds and measure the overall length... then hard cycle them through the pistol using the slide release, measuring them after every cycle. Then you will see yourself which way will hold the bullet the tightest.

With my carry bullets I always keep a close eye on the chambered round and then use it for shooting after a few cycles, if you cycle the same round too many times it will get too short and might cause a over pressure when it is shot.

Ok, I'm getting on a completely different subject, lol.... enjoy your reloading and shooting!
