I think it was a play on the word "cougar", B. It sucks to have to explain your jokes, but it is ok if someone else explains them. I thought it was very clever, but maybe because I'm originally from MN and raised on sarcasm and alcohol.
Boy, now I feel like the star of dumb and dumber. Now that it finally entered my brain she is indeed a cougar and a very pretty one. Quite a transformation in the last 5 years or so.
About time her hubby dumped her (idiot) she started exercising and apparently eating right and lost a lot of weight, she was never as fat as the other violets around here, not fat at all, but now she's slim and trim.
Bet her hubby is regretting it. She'd be my mistress cept she likes my wife and so do I truth be told.

Well a small deviation from gun grips. I did a little modification on a Roach Belly for Jfootin. We talked about replacing the whole handle with wood but I found that there's just a little stub into the polypropylene handle and I was concerned about strength.
Photobucket is ticking me off today and won't let me upload so I'll attempt a direct cut and paste approach.
Fingers crossed.
I inlaid a piece of stabilized buckeye burl and stippled the rest of the handle. Much better grip and looks a little better too.
Not a lot of fun, the poly melts at low temp so mini router bits etc just melt it into a gooey mess. Actually a wood burner came in handy to kind of melt the area I wanted to cut out and then it was a bit brittle to chip out.
Oh and one of the 4 Bambi's hanging around the place the last month or so, I thought about a little deer roping but reread the post on same and decided I had enough excitement in my life without that.

Kimosabi,
Those are beautiful! :D The buckeye burl is gorgeous!! :D:D And the stippling will make it so much easier to grip!!!:D:D:D
I love the size and shape of the Roach Belly, but the plain plastic grip makes it just so so. You really spiffed it up, and I bet the wood adds a little weight for better balance.
Thank you so much for doing this! You're a genius! :yo:

It was rather plain and unexciting with the original handle. Took some effort to put it in the box after the mods. Went out today.
Between that wicked sharp knife which I taped the heck out of the blade and a new file I thought I was gonna bleed out. Not used to working on sharp pointy things.
Didn't feel like it added much weight but perhaps a tad. Feels way more better in hand though.
Hope you dig it when it arrives on your side of the country.

I see how it is uncle B. Picking one side of the family over the other. Don't you remember when nephew JFootin threw up all over your favorite plaid tweet leisure suit after he drank too many Shirley Temples at aunt Estelle's christening? How soon you forget! Just kidding, I'm glad JFootin gets some of your handiwork. Nice upgrade, sure do love that Buckeye Burl. Carry it with pride JFootin.

Just got it this afternoon. It shur is purty! :D
I'm sorry you got cut on that insanely sharp blade. When I got the other one and was handling it, turning it and examining it, it slipped and took a small chunk out of the heel of my hand. It didn't hurt or bleed because the skin is so thick there. Whew! Could have just as easily done something awful to myself. That's when I retrieved the cardboard sheath that came on the blade and put it on. Did the same when I got this one. Of course, I like to look at the blade. I really like the shape of the blade on the Roach Belly! But when I do so, I keep a very firm grip on the handle.
I have been trying to decipher the NC laws concerning carrying knives. It is confusing. It seems like even LEOs and judges have different opinions about it. It is clear that the NC CC permit is specific to guns, not knives. (Interesting because the 2A says the God given right to keep and bear ARMS shall not be infringed. Isn't a knife an arm?) But you can open carry in NC without a permit. It seems that any fixed blade knife carried openly would be fine, but one police officer cited some rule about a 3" blade length limit. Whaaat?! Everybody show me your 3" Bowie knives! So, at this point, I am still not sure if I can carry the Roach Belly openly sheathed on my belt, or even my Gerber Fast Draw folded in my pocket... LOL! The Gerber is cool. It has a 2.99" blade. I am going to have to do some more research about carrying the Roach Belly.

Jfootin, here be some good poop on blades
www.thetruthaboutknives.com
www.knifelaw.us (haven't used this one in some time, may have to screwgle it)
Be warned, knife laws vary greatly, right down to the local levels few places have pre-emption laws on the books with regards to sharp things.

Spent the weekend getting very intimate with a couple Hippo teeth. A fellow member sent me these teeth to make him a set of Ivory grips for an Officers Model. First time I've ever played with the stuff and I gotta tell you it's tough.
Real tough. Once you get through the outer layer, (enamel?) it's like a super hard wood, but that outer layer is like steel, sparks fly on a bandsaw, grinds like steel and you can't get the stuff hot. Enough with the dirty details.
Oh did I mention that it stinks like a dentist office on busy day? Wife hasn't decided if she'll wash my clothes or throw them away, my favorite T shirt too!
Windows open, fan going full tilt.
Some photos for your viewing pleasure.

I have just received these amazing Bawanna grips made from Cocobolo wood for my S&W .44 mag.
They are just fantastic looking as you can see, and the fit and feel is perfect in my hand.
Col. B you sir are a master grip maker, and I am very proud to own this beautiful set. My 629 has never looked so good, I just can't stop looking at it! Sometime soon I hope to have a 1911 that is worthy of another set from you.
Thank you very much!!!

G23 is the winner. I was feeling a bit low the other day so I encouraged my wife to play on the computer while I watched it again turned up to where even I could hear it (along with the distant neighbors). By the time it was over and we had "kicked some alien booty" I felt much better.
Bawanna you are indeed a master of the fine art of grip design and fabrication. I love the finger grips and from what I could tell it appeared to fit tight from all angles.

This is out of that same Hippo tooth with all the outside layer removed so it's all one color and smoother than a babies backside.

Warning- this post may contain pictures of a bikini clad woman. And definitely grip porn. You've been warned.
Well here's the finished project on the first set of Hippo Ivory grips. I abandoned the two tone stag look as it just made the grip too thick. I thought about thinning from the back and maintaining that look which I liked but went this route instead.
It took me all day to go from the previous photos to what you see here. That outside layer is some kind of tough stuff.
I did have to leave a little contour, not enough material to make a uniform slab and a tiny bit of the tough stuff was left at the top of each grip. I kind of like the contour myself, adds a bit of character.
Still a hunk left but I think I'll take a little hiatus from this stuff, even the hardest ebony will be like balsa wood compared to this stuff but it is real pretty and cool stuff.
Evidence photos.

They feel real good. I've found what really makes a smooth grip click is a checkered front strap. That gives you a good solid grip and hold but the beauty of a smooth grip.
I'm tempted to try checkering this stuff. I think it would checker nice but I'm once again skeered, don't want to try it and have it not work.
Kind of a don't mess with perfection or don't fix what ain't broken kind of deal.

Been wanting to try a knife rehandle. Greg sent me up a handleless Barong, traditional knife in the Phillipines.
After about a month of head scratching, research, and what if's and what for's I went for it. This is what I came up with. Still a little spit and polish needed but the day is almost done and back to the sweat shop tomorrow.

Your call Greg, I figured if it turned out decent I'd send it back. I got a good start on an edge on it too. I used to be able to sharpen a knife pretty good but seem to have lost the knack. It's coming along though.
Many of the Barongs I've seen were pretty ornate in the handle, I might add a little more bling to this thing. The handle does feel pretty nice in my hand too.
I got the sheath to work semi good too. Just was tight. I hosed it down with Ballistol (good stuff, just got some for the first time) inside and it seemed to help it. I think it was tight from the beginning, cracks kind of have to open to allow the blade to go in and out.
I love that Trisuli Ghaule, I haven't used it for anything yet but it feels good in hand. I don't know how you can tell what models they are, there's so many I have to keep them wrote down to remember what I got.
That pen knife just might get a new handle now that I've had my baptism.

Such beautiful work! Got thru the first 27 pages and just couldn`t wait any longer, had to skip towards the end to see some of the latest. I WANT, I WANT! now let`s see; a new 1911? nope no money for that now, how `bout a set for my new model blackhawk, certainly a good possibility. OR maybe some way to put a set on the cw45????
Only problem now is what wood, burled maple perhaps, checkered or smooth, inlay or not,(my dad was a navy man back in wwII). so many things to think about!

Hi Bawanna.
Well I've been through all 79 pages here but I didn't see what I need done. I going to start customizing an RIA wide body frame for a dedicated lower for a Mech Tech CCU. Their wide body looks like a Para Ordnance frame but with a difference. The grip screw placement is a little further apart so folks are opening up the lower holes . Have you tried doing grips for a Para P14 before ?
Here's what I intend to do with the frame, and a set of grips that were made for me by another grip maker.

Actually the Para P14 45 LDA is what kicked off the whole grip saga of my life. I wanted a set and Eagle grips made a set but they had a ambi safety or something, a cut that didn't belong on mine.
I spoke with the owner and he was gonna make a set and send them for free for my evaluation but he never got around to it.
So I decided to try it myself. They are tough, getting that radius at the rear and everything fitting properly. Similar as a Beretta 92/96 which I've done dozens of.
I'd be hard pressed to improve on that set you got, they look fantastic and I love the way they left the little piece on the back to match the bottom of the thumb safety. They look great.
I need to break mine out, it's been neglected for quite a long time, they have all been neglected for far too long. I know I'd be a new man if I just went out and did some blasting.

The two rear ears in the rear that fill in the trigger's stirrup channel seem to be the thing no one wants to touch. They are fragile.
Ohhh well ! Looks like I'll have to spend money for a ill fitting set and elongate the holes.

That isn't your set of grips? Your wanting another set.
Seeing that last photo I can see where those would be very fragile. Probably why I had a hard time finding any when I wanted some too.
I have one of my first attempts here at my desk out of Epay or Ironwood and they are so thin I can see through them held up to a light.
I think some stabilized wood would almost be a must in order to have a better chance of them not breaking.
I said they were tough, I sure didn't mean to imply I wouldn't make an attempt.
I work with violets, I deal with challenges every waking moment of every waking day. I'm looking into a job sucking out septic tanks with a straw, I think it might be a good career move. No violets.

I'm sorry for the confusion. Those are my grips on my Para P14. I don't need another set for it.
I'm going to need a set for a RIA wide body frame that I'm thinking of customizing. Everything for that one is the same dimensions as the Para P14, except for the grip screw holes which are further apart. I was told because of the close copy to the Para frame, RIA changed the hole locations. When and if I get the RIA frame I can send you its grip panels to copy.
I did misunderstand you. I thought you didn't want to try making panels for a possibly one time only RIA hi cap frame.
Duh ! Keep out of the septic tanks, the fumes will fry your brain.

I'm sure the serial number is on the frame but if not I'd much rather have the frame than grips. Much easier to build to fit rather than try to match a grip.
If it's really the same as a P14 we might be able to do it.
Mine being an LDA doesn't have those little ears on the back, that might be a challenge with only a grip for a model.

Is this one of those "Hotel California" kind of places ... once you check in you can't check out?
Bawanna

With the exception of one of the first sets of kahrtalk grips going to my good friend Old Lincoln who unfortunately is cursed with living there, nothing in this thread has anything related to California.
I couldn't say for sure though, I never tried to check out, I have thought about it a few times, most recently yesterday, a very bad day with the violets.
Fortunately I decided the way to check out was to jump into a rattlesnake pit. Good thing for me is we don't have rattlesnakes in western Washington. Guess I dodged another fang or two right there.

Truth be told that's my 1911. He wasn't sure which 1911 he was gonna hang them on . He has quite a few. He brings em into the office once in awhile for show and tell.
It was in SEALS for like 30 years, like a White House liason for quite awhile. Don't tell too many war stories and I don't ask.
You can tell talking to him that he's been there and done that.
He teaches once in awhile at Gunsite. Just retired locally here so he's hoping to get down there more often.

Just got another small shipment of stabilized wood today. Took nearly 3 months, the guy is very busy and had other stuff going on.
Sad thing is I had the money when I ordered this and now I don't. Story of my life. Guess a credit card check will have to do.
Left to right.
Black Ash Burl (red dye), Box Elder Burl (green/black), Box Elder Burl (brown/black), Box Elder Burl (red/black), and a hunk of Afzelia Lay.
The red/black Box elder is for the wife of a member here, poor thing has been waiting way toooooo long, and it will sadly be a bit longer. But we're closer than we were yesterday.

Wow, they do fit pretty darn good. That slide lock is a very close thing but looks like it clears, the plunger tube worked perfect, I was concerned with that.
They flush on the mag well. I went inside the line down there thinking a tad shorter would be better than a tad long.
They look good.
Thanks for posting the picture. If occurred to me I didn't take any myself since I couldn't hang them on a gun, that part was weird.
I'm so happy they fit.
I got word last night that the Hippo tooth ones didn't. Still sorting that out, might be back to the drawing board on that one. That makes me sad.

Like wrap around the front? I did a couple with just a piece at the bottom that wrapped around.
Never really a wrap around.
Often thought Hogue had a nice thing with wood grips but with rubber finger grooves on the front strap.

Definitely 2 halves. With bushings you can't slip them on.
They are a challenge matching the contour of the front strap so they look right top and bottom.
The one set I made with the pad around the front at the bottom wasn't as difficult as I expected.
If it was easy, everyone would want to make grips right?

I stopped by Bawanna's last night and I noticed that the GA series grips fit the GC series, but the GC's don't fit the GA. Is this correct? We took the hogue wood grips that were on my GC series and put it on his GA series and they fit fine. We looked at both side by side and couldn't see any reason why grips made for a GA series wouldn't fit a GC series.
Bawanna
08-01-2013, 10:58 AM
I hope your slightly wrong on that. My GA's need to fit your GC and vice versa or I wish I had not let you take your gun home. We never did try your grips on my GA but I still can. I'll try hanging your wood grips on mine before I start to make sure we're good.
I'm hoping that maybe the early GC's just didn't have the frame change that has been messing me up. I still haven't figured it out.
I sent a message to my stabilized wood guy and ordered your wood. Hopefully he'll be way more quicker than last time.
I'll work on the other set and modify your wood set in the mean time.
Wife is getting around much better this morning so I might have to go back to work tomorrow. Kind of mess's with my bench time but I did get to sleep all night cept for letting the dog in and out 4 times when she thumped me on the shoulder. Might get a doggie door.

Do they make IWB knife sheaths or did you have to make your own?
Also, I can understand the comparison of a fixed blade and a gun carried with one in the chamber. Plus I understand that a fixed blade is normally much stronger than a folder.

I'm sure yours are slightly different somehow. I try to avoid mass production and make each one special some how. Some people love that skip line checkering and others don't. I kind of like it myself.
Many places that checker refuse to do skip line and I can't for the life of me figure out why.
It's no more difficult than standard and as the name implies you skip a line from time to time and skipping a line saves time, not much but a little.

It comes with a decent kydex like sheath. It has a little piece bolted on with a belt loop attached to that. I took it off and use my stretchy bungy cord for a belt loop. I'll try to get a picture of that. It's nice if you get caught on something, the knife just flexes a bit rather than trying to rip off your belt.
Might be able to reverse the belt loop so it's down instead of up and make it work for IWB.
It's a pretty good out of the box set up really. No straps, the knife clicks into the sheath and clicks out.

Interesting, I'll look forward to the pictures.

I didn't get a picture of the sheath that comes with the Growl but here's a picture of the sheath I made where I used the stretchy bungee cord belt loops.
It works really well. The sheath that comes with the growl already has the grommets so you just pick the holes that work best for your belt and lace it up.

A guy here pointed me to a semi local place Seattle Fabric that has all kinds of stuff, webbing, this bungee stuff, canvas, on and on with tons of remnants.
He says bungee cord also called shock cord is not all created equal and this place has the good stuff.
It's close to the hub bub of the city but I know where it is and as long as I can get in and out before dark, I should be ok.
Same guy also says he has some so maybe don't need to go anytime soon.
I do like the set up, holds the sheath in close but has a little flexibility when you move or if you catch on something.
Some do similarly with mag pouches etc.
Thanks much for your help and links, you guys rock.

For you viewing pleasure, a set of 1911 full size, full thickness fresh off the bench.
This is Franquette which is a strain of Walnut I picked up a few months back. just enough for one set.
If they sing to anybody let me know, they are unspoken for. I may have to adjust for extended thumb safety, ambi safety and such.
Thought about a little bling along the smooth diagonal strip but sometimes I'm better off to leave well enough alone ya know.

Got it. My bobtail is a little more extreme and I have done some additional radiusing. I have been browsing this thread and like way too many of your options. I would even entertain modifying a set that you haven't sold yet. I like the hippo tooth (teeth?) as well as the buckeye burl, really figured woods etc.
I am refinishing the frame in satin silver with the slide and all controls, bobtail, beavertail etc. in satin black. I will use stainless hex screws for the grips.
Post some of your remaining grips or ideas and I'll hopefully make a decision. Oh, I was also thinking about the half checkering and a thumb safety finger groove like on the (GASP!) VZ grips. Nothing overstated or too wide.

Don't say hippo tooth on this forum ever again. No way, no how. The finished product on those was beautiful but getting there was a nightmare from hell. I may someday if I live long enough touch slabbed ivory maybe? Raw horn or tooth is just to beyond my tools and knowledge. I learned a ton about it and bad as it was it was a good experience. I'm trying to remove it from my memory banks.
Sadly I can't get the buckeye burl from the guy I usually use who has consistently provided good stabilized wood. I might be able to find a chunk on ebay or something or perhaps if your browsing you could too. My guy sometimes has dyed Box Elder Burl that resembles buckeye pretty close too.
I've not sure what you mean on thumb safety finger groove. I've done mag release recess's. We'll have to figure that out.

Bawanna you are correct. I was not thinking clearly as my post was near 1700hrs.

Burl, Rosewood, darker stained Bubinga and Pau Ferro, or whatever.
If you have some stabilized blanks, let me know what variety, color and figuring they have and I'll pick one.
I have an idea of what I am looking for so I may email you some pictures for reference.

My first color choice is the black/gray or blue/gray.
My second color choice is in the figured Koa, Cocobolo, Pau Ferro etc.

I did but it's sized for a K or MK. Frankly it's not as pretty as the last stuff either.
I'm trying to put together some loot to order some more. I have one piece on order, the guy is real good but he ain't too quick shipping. Course he has to cut it and stabilize it and all but he said next week and it's been like a month. I still like him and trust his product though.
I'll make a note to get more of that. You thinking SP101 or something else?
AIRret- he doesn't charge for engraving so it would still be 80 bucks. The grips would depend on what we make them out of. I can't keep giving away the stabilized stuff, wife says giving it away and paying shipping is not helping me get money to buy more. She's an economic wizard she is.......
I can do real reasonable on some wood that I have and it doesn't take a huge piece so even the stabilized shouldn't be a kings ransom.

Still have that last set of 1911 grips and a few others. Need to post pictures again and find them a good home.

Yeah Coco Bolo would cover all those looks pictured. It varies tremendously even in the same piece of wood.
See it almost like Zebra wood with vertical grain, wild figure going all directions (my favorite) and everything in between.
I need to get up to the wood store and try and get some, I'm pretty much on empty.
I am working some as we speak. Didn't know what it was until I started working it and the dust, taste, numb hands, and head being a little out of whack all scream Coco Bolo.

Just got back from the wood store. It was rather lean again, not much to even look at. I did get a piece of Rosewood that looks very much like the second photo in nimbadews post.
I'll have to look at the slip, already forgot what it's called. 32 bucks a board foot!
They had a large piece of ebony not completely useable due to sap wood and a few cracks. roughly 2 1/2' by maybe 7" average. They sell it by the pound.
It was 186 bucks. I wanted it but not that bad, so I left it.
Need to scout out another wood supplier.

Pau Ferro shouldn't be difficult to work with. What do you want me to do to it or you just comparing woods.
I haven't played with it very much but it is hard enough and a lot of places make grips out of it. Looks very nice although it can vary from beautiful to pretty plain too, like most other woods.

I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking for? Sorry. Are the pins similar to last year?
Probably something dark, not a lot of contrast but some nice grain pattern.
I might have some rosewood I just got yesterday that might fill the bill nicely.
Send some pics of the pins, maybe wait till you win those Pau Ferro grips and send the pins and those all at once, we'll cheat the postman out of a second trip.

Bawanna

Colonel can you make grips for the newer Mk's yet or just the older ones?
The short answer to that question is I don't know. I thought I had it all sorted out, defining the new and the old. The GA early and the GC later. But I've made grips on my GA and they didn't fit someones elses GA?
The set I did modified for nimbadew which was a GC which made me all excited since he offered to loan it to me to make a bunch for folks here fit my GA perfectly.
So there's some variance that isn't based on serial number.
I'd really like to get a solid for sure solution. I know there are many here that want grips for both the K and the MK. I'd sure like to fix them all up.

We do need to talk Bawanna, I have an NYPD K9 and two nice blocks of stabilized Amboyna burl cut to K9 sized blocks.
They await your whittlers touch. I'd send the gun along for fitting, if it can be legally done.

I've checked into just that and using an FFL would be difficult. They tell me that they would have to received it, log it in, then transfer it to me, then take it back log it back in and transfer it back to you.
I have had folks send just the frame which technically is not legal since the frame has the serial number. That's also why I can't just get stripped frames to whittle grips on.
I don't see an issue sending a frame myself, we can plead insanity. Call it machined parts or metal scrap. It's not a gun without the top end.

Well boys and girls I spent the weekend whittling out MK9 grips, I use the plural terminology rather weakly since I really only netted one set.
Started off pretty good, on set one.
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n538/hopke5/DSCN4500_zps3d384480.jpg (http://s1138.photobucket.com/user/hopke5/media/DSCN4500_zps3d384480.jpg.html)

Wanted a set with a little more grain pattern so went to a different spot on the board and went for set # 2.
Pretty similar, went well, got them fitting perfectly, looking good.
Then catastrophe struck.
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n538/hopke5/DSCN4493_zpsc69c2bdc.jpg (http://s1138.photobucket.com/user/hopke5/media/DSCN4493_zpsc69c2bdc.jpg.html)

Cutter grabbed, got away from me trying to recess the screw head. Done it before, still breaks my heart. 4 hours down the commode.
Guess I at least have a nice set I can use for a template to set depths on the cutter in the future.
Did make one hell of a mess as usual too, make myself proud.

Here is my most recent personal project gun. I picked up a mixed-parts, Israeli, Mk III Hi Power for a good price. Took it down and cleaned it up. It ended up being more work than I expected as someone had laid into the hammer strut pin with a jack hammer. :( A new pin from Midway arrived, and it is back together with a nice Cylinder and Slide drop-in hammer/sear kit. More important, it wears the most beautiful grips ever to grace an FN Hi Power. Many thanks to the Colonel! This will be a carry gun much of the time. I am hesitant as the grips are too pretty for that, but on the other hand they feel wonderful! I just have to put them to work. ;)

Old Goat!
The Old Italian Golfer
An 80-year-old Italian goes to the doctor for a checkup. The doctor is
amazed at what good shape the guy is in and asks, ‘how do you stay in such great physical condition?’
I’m Italian and I am a golfer,’ says the old guy, ‘and that’s why I’m in
such good shape. I’m up well before daylight and out golfing up and down the fairways. I have a glass of vino, and all is well.’
’Well’ says the doctor, ‘I’m sure that helps, but there’s got to be more to it. How old was your Father when he died?’
’Who said my Father’s dead?’
The doctor is amazed. ‘You mean you’re 80 years old and your Father’s still alive. How old is he?’
‘He’s 100 years old,’ says the Old Italian golfer.’ In fact he golfed with
me this morning. Then we went to the topless beach for a walk and had a little vino. That’s why he’s still alive. He’s Italian and he’s a golfer, too.’
’Well,’ the doctor says, ‘that’s great, but I’m sure there’s more to it than that. How about your Father’s Father? How old was he when he died?’
’Who said my Nono’s dead?’
Stunned, the doctor asks, ‘you mean you’re 80 years old and your
grandfather’s still living! Incredible, how old is he?’
‘He’s 118 years old,’ says the Old Italian golfer.
The doctor is getting frustrated at this point, ‘So, I guess he went golfing with you this morning too?’
‘No, Nono couldn’t go this morning because he’s getting married today.’
At this point the doctor is close to losing it.
‘Getting married! Why
would a 118-year-old guy want to get married?’
‘Who said he wanted to?’ Just sayin:Amflag2:

+1 . . . Love the burl inlay. That ought to be your signature grip style.

I sort of went into this one blind, wasn't sure how it was gonna turn out.
I guess I actually owe someone here, I'll have to go back and check. This is the set where I buggered up the mounting hole.
I just inlaid the burl to cover up the goof and recut the mounting hole and got it right the second time.
I was kind of pleased with how they came out.
That was a nice piece of wood but I can see doing this with plain grained wood to bring a little life to it.
I'm just overjoyed that they fit and Bonjorno likes em. A win/win for bawanna. Got another fella that needs to test drive a set to see if they fit his MK, right about now I'm feeling pretty lucky.

Here's my latest project for Nimbadew (might have the spelling screwed up on that).
Kind of a work in progress and going slow and careful on this set. Thought I'd post pics here so he can see and tell me where to go from here.
One thing I learned is that most 1911 screws are tapered. He wanted me to use allen head 1911 screws on this set but the lower screw has so little to screw into that the 1911 screw will just barely thread, not much holding it. If Kahr sells allen grips screws I'm pretty sure they won't be tapered.
I'll have to research untapered 1911 screws if there is such a thing.
For your viewing pleasure.
The original slab.

So far I've left these just a little bit bulky. He wanted a full grip and the back strap not reduced.
Since he's relatively local we can try to get them fitting just the way he wants them. (I hope).
I think I'm gonna take a hiatus from MK grips for a spell, take a ton of time and I've had the borrowed MK9 for probably a year off and on. I probably should give it back at least for a while.
I'll try to whittle a set from time to time and offer them up.
Think I'll go out and blow leaves for a while. Entertaining for the neighbors, watching a guy in a wheelchair with a back pack leaf blower.
Gotta fix a right side brake on the manual chair first, always something huh?

If the other side looks like what I think it looks like I'm gonna decline. I've spend a good amount of time and thinking capacity and Sig's are down right tough. Just too much crap to work around on the left side.
If I had a beater model to play with I'd probably give it a shot.
I remember by old play ryoung hounded me for quite a spell, never did get him fixed up. Epic failure for bawanna for sure.

Say Colonel, want to take a crack at these?

That's some pretty nice wood, be hard to improve on that anyhow me thinks.
Now if you just want checkering or an inlay or something other than slab to fitting grips, I'm your man.

That is the set you would actually be working on. I was thinking of just checkering on them, simple pattern that wouldn't completely hide the grain. Wanted to get some input before we would commit to it.

I'm your man. Looking at the picture I think the grain would show through checkering pretty good.
Kind of draw out the area you want checkered, kind of what you want it to look like and we'll get to checkering.
Standard or skip line. We'll get r dun.

Nice. Kind of handy that I made that set on the Ruger. So I'm sure they fit well.
Thanks for posting that.
You gonna send me them Sig grips for a makeover or what?

I'm still debating about what pattern to go with. The grain is so pretty, I kinda hate to lose it.

Proof of authenticity, kind of a trademark thing and not bad to look at neither. The fact that we share the same last name is good too. (We're cousins).

I broke form of late and have been checkering a few knife handles. Figured I might as well post them for show and tell, ridicule, harsh judgement and criticism.

Just finished the larger of these two today. Wanted to make them match.

Did 3 others for other folks. Couple wood and a couple horn handle.

One skiplined and one regular.

And a set of skip lined grips to match for the guy with the skip lined horn handle.

Dayum! I am fresh out of ridicule and harsh judgement.
So, I will have to stick to honest criticism . . .
I like them. A lot! :D

What, the grips or the cousin???
LOL! Both!
As a knife maker I can really appreciate those handles. What type of blades are those. They look to be of Nepal influence.
Bawanna
03-31-2014, 12:10 PM
Correct, they are straight from Nepal via Himalayan imports. Thanks to another moderator here who is also much wiser than I he gave me some bad influence along with a khukri and I'm now also a khukri addict.
The little one is actually unofficially being called the bawanna bowie. Officially I think it's call a Micro Mini AK Bowie. I got the larger one and got to thinking if I could shrink it down to 7 inches or so it'd make a fine belt knife. I mentioned to the nice lady who runs HI and she had some made up. I love it.

Hey Bawanna, I'm truly impressed!! Nice work.
How do you keep your eyes from getting squirrelly when you do such close work?
When I do close work it takes my eyes an hour to straighten out.

Ha! I clearly remember the days when I could checker with my nekkid eye. Now I wear reading glasses and an opti visor and still get cross eyed.
Probably from trying to checker with the nekkid eye?
Or maybe it was just timing. I know right about the 40 mark things started going to pot on me.
The eyes and the neck, usually the neck causes more breaks. I raised the work area so I'm no hunched over. Somedays I can go all day, used to go day and night before I went back to work and had to be someplace daily.
Hell to get old I guess.
