I, for one, would like to see some of the guns that the Zootshooters from around the country use in their matches. I haven't been lucky enough to attend a match yet but I'll start with what I would use under the current rules.

Maybe my New Service with 4 1/2 inch barrel in 38 wcf caliber with my Remington model 14 1/2R carbine in matching caliber?

For right now, some inspiration - found this online, a Remington Model 11 made in 1928 with a factory 10 round magazine tube. That was for 'market hunters', who commercially harvested fowl for restaurants and hotels.

Hustler - I don't see anything wrong about showing some Kahr products used in Zootshooting. I've been looking at their Tommys for a while now.

3. For the rest of you mugs that're wondering what we're talking about, it's a Golden Age oriented forum, primarily oriented towards 1930s fashions (hence, the Fedora). You want an authentic look, it's a great place to check out. Seriously, if you're going to shoot this period you need a hat and this is the best place to read up on them.

Ditto praise for Fedora Lounge - it's definately for people like me who never was taught how to wear more formal clothes, vintage clothes and hats.

Ghostsoldier - your semi-M1A1 intrigues me - it's obviously a SBR and had to be registered with the govt, right? What kind of hassle was that? And, what was the sequence - i.e, do you tell the feds through your application that you want to create one of these and once they approve then you do, or ? Thanks!

Alvin,

Auto-Ordnance sells Thompsons that are already registered as SBRs. You can purchase one through a Class III dealer. After you purchase the SBR you have to fill out a form and have your sheriff sign it or register it under a LLC. You then mail it to the BATFE with a check for $200. After they approve your request (this can take several weeks or months) they send the form back to the dealer. The form has a big "postage stamp" on it that shows $200 not $.44. The stamp has the serial number hand written on it. There is also a registration number ink stamped at the top of the form. Once your dealer has your approved form, he releases the SBR to you with the document. This document (or at least a photo copy) must always accompany the SBR.

If you already have a Thompson and want to convert it to a SBR, take it to a Class III manufacturer. They can put a new serial number on it and install the short barrel. You would then follow the same process as mentioned before.

I'm not sure what happens if you are denied by the BATFE, but I assume the dealer or manufacturer would have to sell the SBR to someone else and then refund your money. I do not believe you can do either in reverse because the SBR's serial number must be on the form that you submit to the BATFE. BATFE will also keep your $200.

Not all states allow possession of Class IIIs. This is the procedure for Colorado. Check your local laws and make sure that your local sheriff will even sign off on a Class III. Ask a your dealer or BATFE agent. I hope this info helps and please correct me if I'm wrong!

Alvin,
The Hustler is correct in his description of the process. The fingerprinting and CLEO sign-off is the most aggravating part of the whole thing; the ATF waiting game is standard fare when dealing with the Feds....nothing you can do BUT wait. :(

He's also correct in telling you to check your state and local laws first, to make sure it's even legal to own a SBR...I found out the hard way that Alabama, for instance, allows full auto, but NOT SBR's....go figure! :rolleyes:

I had the AO 1911a1 heater in a horizontal shoulder rig of black leather...and carried the tommy gun, while the wife had the Colt 1908 stuffed into her garter. Everybody lined up to have their pictures taken by the main still, and I had them drop their 'toy' guns and hold the real deal. We had cocktails,Havana cigars,and gambled the nite away...gangster style.

This model 12 was purchased for $20.00 in 1968 and given to me some years later. It was made in 1914 (63,000 SN range) it has a polychoke and recoil pad installed. the pad and choke are probably from the 1940s or 1950s is my guess.

This'd be appropriate, if I was playing a rumrunner on the Canadian border : 1916 Webley Mk VI in the original .455 chambering, with (faux) ivory grips and riding in an Ostrich-skin shoulder holster.

Here are my .45 ACP handguns, my Webley is 1918 and the Enfield is 1924, both converted :( But fortunately they both shoot great with my .45 Auto Rim target load. The other pistols are a S&W 1917, Colt 1917, S&W 1937 (a 1917 made for the Brazillian Navy) and a S&W 625, all but the 625 are Zoot candidates.

Thanks. I got a bunch of Fiocchi .455 dirt cheap and I still shoot it only sparingly. Check Gunbroker, there's a guy selling .455 Webley cylinders (not cheap, tho).

AK, I love that model 1900 Luger! the holster is great also, is it marked? It looks high quality like S.D. Meyers and it a perfect fit. I have a 1920 commercial in 30 Luger. However, it came with a WWII German Black holster and WWII magazines, nothing from the period of the 1920s. Does Fiochi ammo work in yours? It does not in mine but other brands do.

Just to be totally retro : a 10 bore hammer F. Williams double bar/messenger/stage gun, very similar if not identical to a Bonehill. It has bucketloads of character and weighs in at a hefty 9 lbs, even with 20 1/2" barrels (that are real nicely trimmed down, even has a brass bead sight).

Remember, don't bring a knife to a gunfight..

I'm looking for something like that in 12ga. I have always had a thing for a rabbit eared coach gun. I've found some imports, but nothing I care to move on yet. I will shoot it plenty though, so I don't necessarily want an old gun with lots of history. Also can you still find, and where would you find those full brass shells?

The 12 Gauge coach gun from TTN is a reproduction of the Colt double. It's what I use in Cowboy Action Shooting. The best of the imports by far.

Here are some guns in the now legal 32 ACP. I think the Sauer 38 H is barely zoot legal but the CZ 70 and post war PPK-L are post 1939 and not legal. The PPK is a pre war example from 1937 and the PP is post war but the same design as the pre 1939 PPs. Of course the 1903 is good to go.

Anyone with a .38 S&W top-break that needs cartridges? I've got about 100 rounds of Remington Peters nickel-cased (post 1961) that I have no need for - about 80% are lead RN, the rest copper-jacketed HP. It's not brand-new, but it's not collectible stuff either.

I've got a couple recent acquisitions:

1918 era 1911 - all original with no rust or pitting but obviously seen alot of use over the last 92 years - $725 total:

1917 Eddystone Model of 1917 - a 30-06 caliber competitor to the 1903 Springfield (actually was used more in WWI than the 1903 by a 2 to 1 margin) and more ergonomic for me to shoot - all matching except for 4 small parts. Should be Zootshooter legal - $350 out the door.

Couple of real beauties. I have my dad's 1917 Enfield (Eddystone) He sporterized it but only the stock. Left all the metal, sights etc intact. I put it back in it's original configuration a few years ago. The wood is not nearly as nice as yours. I might have to do a boyds to make it prettier but like it alot as is. I also have my grandfathers 1917 (winchester). He sporterized his also, shortened the barrel, removed the sights, put a scope on it so it's a mere shadow of it's original self but still much loved and cherished.

I just had the opportunity to educate, and fondle one of those transitional 1911's. The story behind that goes like this: My uncle (more of a father than my own), has an elderly widow neighbor. She asked him to check out her husband's service pistol. Tim (my uncle) agrees, she pulls out a shoe box, and in it is a well used and worn holster, and an improvised pistol belt (holster wasn't ever issue either). In the holster is a 1911. Being more of a flintlock shooter, my uncle knows just enough about a 1911 to recognize it as such, and to be able to shoot it. He checks the chamber, and not seeing the round that was in it, lowers the hammer, which slipped from his thumb, and a weak load fire, the round left a mark but no dimple on the concrete near them. (That was Tim's AD, we all have one and usually no more than a couple, anything else means retraining, or training. Fortunately, no one was injured, and like most AD's was just beyond embarrassing.) My uncle couldn't remember how they come apart, and asks me to show him. So I demonstrated the correct way to disassemble the M1911, cleaned it and oiled it, and gave it back. That was a beautiful 1911, even had a bunch of a bright blue finish left after I oiled it. I don't think it was anywhere near original, but it sure was pretty. I also got to re-learn about the transitional period 1911's out of that. I'd forgotten that the Army had done that. I really hope that my uncle has a shot to get that pistol (as his neighbor has some family, but no one who would appreciate that), as the history alone is awesome, and should be preserved.

A great 1911 story and I'm glad no one got hurt!! It's amazing to me how many of these old guns are lying around in shoeboxes, or in the dresser, or under the bed, loaded for years if not decades. My uncle had a Walther like that and I had to unload it after his death. It was a WWII bring-back that was probably loaded and put in the night stand in 1946 to remain there until I unloaded it in 1982.

It is amazing to me as well about that. I fancy myself as a student of martial history, and to find one of these that has obviously seen the world and been some one's best buddy always makes my heart flutter. I would hang on to that Walther, just for the family history alone. I wish more of the folks who carried them would put the stories onto paper. Makes life much more interesting, and can influence the value as well. Not that these gems should be sold, but none the less it helps future generations appreciate them and the history more.

Both original. The LP08 is matching except for the magazine, its a 1917 DWM. I have a repro shoulder stock and holster set for it. The Mauser C96 is prewar with an original non matching shoulder stock. As a present my wife purchased me a P08 1917 DWM as a mate a few years ago.

Mauser C96 and LP08s can have original or repro shoulder stocks and not be considered CL 3 short barreled rifles. This has to do with their C&R status and has been published by the BATF. They both shoot better (for me anyway) with the shoulder stocks attached. Stocked pistols would be an interesting Zoot Shoot side match.

Hmm, I thought that ANY weapon that could have a stock attached fell under SBR's. The C&R status not withstanding. Of course that may be the only reason they are not is the C&R status. I know that new guns are subject to that Krap, and if you have a pistol with a rail, and put a handgrip on that rail that it is considered SBR. That would make an interesting side match though.

Here's a good thread on the matter of Mauser, Luger, and Browning shoulder stocks. Basically, they have been removed from the NFA. They have also ruled that original pattern detachable stocks are O.K.

Here is the story we got from the dealer. Again, this just the story. Make of it what you like. The dealer said he purchased the gun from a widow. The widow said her husband bought the gun decades earlier in a Chicago police auction of confiscated mob weapons. There are four small holes hand carved in the right grip, i.e. notches in the grip. Maybe 80 percent finish. I need to take photos of this. $1,750

This article alludes to photos of the weapons in question, yet doesn't run them.

The weapons are believed to be among those seized after a raid April 13, 1933, at the outlaws’ apartment hideout near 34th Street and Oak Ridge Drive in Joplin.

Five lawmen in two cars, armed only with handguns, descended on the apartment, and a bloody gunfight ensued. Two of the lawmen — Newton County Constable John Wesley Harryman and Joplin police Detective Harry McGinnis — were killed. Clyde Barrow, Buck Barrow and fellow gang member W.D. “Deacon” Jones were injured.

After the raid, police confiscated guns, a camera and personal items from the apartment, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. The film in the camera, which was developed by The Joplin Globe at the time, was of special interest. The images on the film, which include some with the guns, were the first to identify the outlaws. Historians say the publication of those images in newspapers across the country spelled the beginning of the end for the duo.

Once I have my Thompson, I shoot some photos of it and the Colt. I plan on submitting the paperwork to convert the Thompson to an SBR once I have it.

Here's a couple I will definitely use, the Tommygun may get a vertical foregrip in the future and the wheel gun is a genuine 1917 built S&W 1917 that still has about 30% of it's original factory blued finish.

I finally had a chance to get to the range today. My time was limited, I only put 100 rounds through the 1927a1. Functioning was flawless, not one failure of any type. The rifle was shooting 10 inches low at 25 yards using the basic sight with the ladder folded down. Using the ladder sight at 100 yards, I was able to pick off pieces of clay birds that someone had left on the backstop. All shooting was off hand.

I did not try the drum, I did not take the time to load it.

I expect to get to the range again this weekend and should have a good bit more time.

I think i will have to build one of these. I've got a good shooting M&P .38 from 1906 that was horribly rebuffed and reblued that would be a winner for this, found the Barrel band source, now to decide if I want to bob the barrel on the old timer from 1906.

A work in progress : an ostrich skin shoulder holster for the S&W #3 actually fits a detachable mag Broomhandle snugly, and disappears under a sport jacket.

Still needs a retention strap and I think I'm going to repurpose the .44 loops on the left side to retaining straps for a brown leather mag pouch (taken off a Makarov holster ages ago), which will hold one (1) spare stripper clip of 9mm.

New to the forum, new to the sport, just trying to get started and have been picking up guns to get things rolling. So far I have a Hungarian FEG PJK-9 Hi-Power, FM Argentine "Detective" Hi-Power, East German PM Makarov, Polish Radom P-64 Makarov, 1907 Savage self loading pistol in .32ACP, Llama 9mm 1911 (picking up a second as well), 1895 Nagant revolver, H&R Break Top .32S&W revolver, Universal M1 Carbine, Remington Model 11E 12g and am building a semi-auto Sten Mk.III. I know that the FM Hi-Power has an inappropriate thumb safety on it, but I will probably just get another FEG and use the FM as my concealed carry instead.
Here are some pictures of some of them, working on getting correct grips for the Hi-Powers, but the custom ones I am getting are a 3 month wait minimum!

I have always had a soft spot for the 1911, and I actually like Llama and Star pistols (have owned a few over the years), so when I found this one, I just had to get it. Since it is in 9mm, I can use the loads I am making for my Hi-Powers and it gives me a fun shooter that my wife is comfortable with, so I may persuade her yet to join me!

The seed of this must have been planted back in 82 when I converted 6 FA 1928 Tommies to fire blanks. A Cal. movie prop outfit requested the build from Thompson/West Hurley NY back when I was employed there. Interesting blanks they use for those movie guns. They are 308 caseings heavily crimped to a 45ACP configuration with a compressed black powder charge. The guns were supposed to be used in Scarface and from closely watching the Tommies run in Johnny Depp's Public Enemy movie, im sure those BP firing guns made a showing there also. You can tell from the huge fireballs/smoke that would rip from the blanks.:53: Those blank gun were far more wicked to fire than the real thing! Seems a long time ago....

How about this for any long range side match? I recently traded for this rifle with the idea to use it as a P-Scout, but it should fit in nicely for an AZSA side match.

It's a sporterized '03 Springfield with a Redfield aperture sight. The stripper clip guide is intact and I managed to pick up a box of 40 of the clips.

It is still 30-06, not sure if it has the original barrel. If it is the original barrel, the smith did a great job removing the original rear sight.

I made time for a quick trip to a a public range. I put 25 rounds through the rifle at a five bull target. The longest range at this facility is 50 yards. All rounds were shot off hand.

My best group was just over 2 inches and my worst was about 5 inches. The front sight has a 2 MOA bead.

I must say that I am pleased with this rifle. I look forward to getting to another range so that I can shoot at 100 yards, from a good bench rest.

I'll post an update after I get to the range again.

Hey guys, I just joined the forum and figured I should post my small collection of Zootshooter guns.

Top row: 1917 Webley MKVI in .45acp; S&W M28 .357 which I refinished to a high-gloss blue, so it ought to meet the 10' rule (the original finish wasn't in the best shape).
Bottom row - the works in progress: S&W Victory Model .38 that someone nickel-plated and added cheesy faux stag grips that will soon be replaced (it was a gift, looks a little silly but shoots well); and my retro-styled 1911 project gun built from parts which will hopefully be getting a vintage slide and a new wide spur hammer soon.

A better shot of the Webley (easily my favorite to shoot) with my holster I made for it and some of my handloads.

I don't think the Victory model looks cheesy at all. I like real stag better than the fake stuff but it looks nice to me.
And that Webley nearly makes me cry. I love that.

Hey thanks Bawanna. Maybe cheesy was a poor choice of words on my part. In photos they look alright, but in person they aren't so great... kinda uncomfortable too. I've got a pair of M&P grips somewhere that should look okay on it.

ol boy, if you can find a Tyler T grip for the Victory, it makes the smaller grips feel so much better and would look great on that gun.

It's been ages since I'd posted here, so here is how my old Victory Model is looking these days, with a pair of vintage grips added. They are a LOT more comfortable than those old faux-stag ones.
