View Full Version : How does Kahrtalk feel about .22lr "tactical" rifles??

I was in my local gun shop the other day browsing as I do too often... But I was checking out some of those cheap 22LR "plinking tactical" rifles. (M&P) came to mind. They run around 400-500 bucks but seem like they could be kinda fun. Considering I am anything but a hunter and I do not plan on an apocalypse anytime soon I was kinda interested in one just for fun at the range. I mean you could shoot that for hours with the girlfriend of friends when they come to town for about 30-40 dollars. Besides my uncle does have a .223 Knights Armament SR-15 (w/ EOTEC) if I wanted to shoot something a little heavier and I suppose a little bit farther. But all in all any of you wise individuals out there have any experience with one? Pros and Cons? Or should I just save my money and not even bother with one. But I know for sure a base Bushmaster without attachments I kinda wanna stay away from just given price of ammo alone. But thanks for the input guys since I've only been here for a couple days and I am loving all the responses.:53:

Keep in mind I dont know my a**hol* from my elbow when it comes to rifles.

$400 to $500 is cheap?? My humble opinion would be to buy an SS 10-22 with synthetic stock for about $230 or so at Walmart and save the rest for ammo or tricking the Ruger out. Good grief! $500 for a wannabe "tactical .22"!!
I would opt for the Ruger and maybe a GSG 1911 .22 pistol.

Its funny IMO that I have bought and seen just about everything Wally World has to offer, and I buy 90% of my ammo from there (excluding my Golden Sabers) but not once have I even glanced at the guns in the case but thanks for your input because yet again I am the king of all noobs when it comes to rifles and that of the sort. But I will be looking into alot more options with the help of you fine people. TYVM:D

And by cheap I mean I think Bushmasters run 8-900 and my uncles Knights Armament was I believe just over 2000. But that is a beautiful piece.
(Please dont quote my prices I am not a blue book...lol)

I've had several of those 10/22's over the years, but just don't need any rifles now. I've looked at those latest Rugers and thought about getting one just to have a rifle of some sort, but I just don't need it, living in the city and having no place to shoot it. An indoor 15-yard range just wouldn't be worthwhile for the rifle, but will do for my pistols.
I still have my 25-round Butler(?) magazine and mag-feeder... just in case I ever do get one of those again. :)

GSG also makes a little 22 carbine, kind of a MP5 clone looking thing that is just a blast to shoot. My sons if very very accurate, its looks wicked cool and just like the Ruger theres all kinds of options for tricking it out, although it certainly don't need any of them. They make a carbine and a pistol version. We got the carbine model.

I plan to look over a GSG 1911 22 if I can ever find one, looks like a great little fun 22 for a very reasonable price.

I have to agree with Wynn on this one.400 to 500 bucks is a right fair chunk of money.Keep looking and you`ll find something nice for much less.

If you want it, get it. Guns can have more than one purpose, if you choose. I would like to own one of each.

Now, about the idea of taking my girlfriend to the range for a day of fun......

it would only happen once;)

THIS!

You can pick up one of these for about 325-350 and they are SUPER fun. Go check out my "I Got a 1911!" in the 1911 Pistols sub-forum here.

I have had a 10/22 for a lot of years. It was the normal carbine.

I have changed it twice once with a custom made carbon fiber stock. It reduced the weight to about 4 pounds. I didn't get the ergometrics of the pistol grip as good as I wanted. I covered it in camo cloth thought that it looked pretty tactical. Later I wanted to try a bull pup design so I bought a plastic bullpup stock for it, that is the way it is configured today. I would like to build my own bullpup stock from carbon but haven't made the time to do it.

I have numerous times darlin. Thats a fine looking pistol and your directly responsible for planting the want in me. I still want to see on in person before I drop any money and right now the piggy bank is dreadfully empty but its day will come.
If you want something bad enough you'll find a way to get it.:wof:

I saw both of the 1911 import .22's at one vendor's table in the last gun show this month. Both were $300 and the STI GSG definitely looks better quality than the other. I don't remember what the other was called, but I saw another at my dealer's store last week... the Puma... looked like a Hi-Point import.
I really thought about getting one, but I wanted a 1911 .45.

Just to clarify and I'm not a perfectionist but it's ATI GSG not to be confused with STI which is a totally different pony.

I haven't seen the Puma but if it looks like a Hi-Point I suspect I can live without.

100Percent, I've put my 10/22 in several stocks also. Tried a bullpup too, loved the feel, size and look but with about 6 inches of plastic between the real trigger and the bullpup trigger it was pretty hideous. I still have it, not sure why.
A real one, not encased in a Mattel piece of plastic with linkage would be wicked cool

I have it in a Boyds laminate thumbhole stock I bought unfinished. It was a project to finish it and make it the way I wanted but it's real nice now.

If you ever build one, I'd sure like to see pictures.................

Oh, my bad! I thought you only had eyes for me and your husband. You know how I get so jealous.

I'll try to control my jealous rages. I know the rest of the fellas love to hear from you too, I shouldn't be so sensitive, must be all those sensitivity sessions with Surv. Glad thats all over and we can be ourselves again.

Somebody suggested I was a Bogart the other day. This must be what they meant.

Fingernail polish remover(acetone)??

may have to try it.

I have acetone from work. My husband says I'm like the old guy in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding". He fixed everything with Windex, I fix everything with acetone.

wyntrout

I keep the fingernail version at hand and the "straight" stuff in the garage... too much is not healthy. Lighter fluid and acetone are my favorite "removers" though some plastics kind of soften with either!
Do a tiny less conspicuous spot test first.

I do have that citrus-smelling Goo Gone for light work.

Unless you want to seek a complete refinish I'd lean towards cover, not remove.
Maybe make it a little more suttle with a darker color but not a perfect match. Course a perfect match would be good if it was perfect. Otherwise make it look like you planned it.

I know that Kel-Tec makes an inexpensive Tactical .22, and Mossberg too. These run from mid $200's to mid $300's.
I think, as mentioned before, a Ruger 10-22,(low $200's) would be a good way to go. You can then buy the tactical replacement stock, with tri-pod, and end up with a quality rifle that could also be returned to original carbine form if desired. All of this for, depending where you buy, for less than what a S&W would cost.
You could also check out used ones at your local shop. I've seen a used Sig for around $350.

Those 10/22's have been around for a long time, and I gotta say they are ubiquitous, and handy. Very accurate, and easy to do anything to or with. I took mine and was shooting thumbtacks (clear) at 50 on a target backer (white target turned backwards) off the bench. I've rolled a few bunnies and tree rats and what have you with it as well. Great gun, it'll serve you well.

Yep those 10/22s are great values and fun. Got my first one when the Jacks would mock me when shooting cotton tails, Wy. Got the 10/22 and rolled them jacks. :)

I finally bought another one of these and now I just need to sort out the best ammo for the range and for hunting/SD... ya know, for a "Prepper" long gun.

I'll look at SS sling mounts and some kind of optics. I've always been partial to 1 to 1.5X variables to 4 or 5X... full-sized rifle scopes because I haven't seen good "rimfire versions"... not that I've looked in a long time... and price is a big factor, too!

This baby weighs in at under 4.5 pounds on my kitchen scale with the ten-round magazine in place. The barrel on this All-Weather Carbine is 18.5".

i'm pretty torn right now w/ this decision on my next purchase. have never owned a .22 rifle, but finding a desire to teach my son to shoot and to have something lightweight to have around. i'm having a tough time deciding between a 10/22 and modifying it w/ something like a Knoxx floating barrel stock and top rail, or getting a 15-22 and having a 'training' .22 for the AR platform. Ultimately, both. But in the next 6-12 months, have to pick one.

Unlimited gun funds sure would be nice.

It will cost a bit more but look at something like this http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/item/18-Gov39t-Profile-22-Upper-w-Railed-Gas-Block-1743 and http://cmmginc.secure-mall.com/item/AR-15-Lower-Group-511 then you have more than just a .22, it has opptions. The Mossberg is cute but looks a pain to strip for cleaning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bnJyl2ptbI , the M&P 15 22 is better but still just a .22

I have been enjoying my S&W 15-22 for about a year now. Mine came with the Magpul sights and adjustable stock for $410. It was a great intro to guns for me. I really like how the controls mimick a full size AR. When I get to shoot my friend's AR's he always comments how I need to get a full size based on how well I operate them.

I test fired some ammo... inside today in my 10/22... the Remington 38-gr Subsonic ~1049 fps in a "rifle" barrel... mine is 18.5"... the All-Weather Carbine model. It's still kind of noisy, but the Colibrì is fairly quiet. I'll post a video and link for relative noise and some stills of the "Flashes". I'll have to edit those a bit, though.

The Remington Subsonic cycled okay and ejected about 60" to the right from a foot or so off the floor. The 20-grain, powderless Colibrì didn't even budge the bolt and made no "flash" and barely any sign at all other than the small "crack". You can shoot that and cycle the bolt by hand... no biggee. It buried the 20-gr bullet in a poplar board that I had.

I tried to make a decent backstop and not duplicate Getsome's awesome 12-gauge test...<snicker>:D I used an IBM 18 GB SCSI hard drive that I don't figure to use again, as a final backstop in front of the brick hearth. On initial testing when firing through 1/4" plywood to start the bullets upsetting and limit penetration. Behind the 1/4" plywood, the Mouser Electronics 2240-page or so catalog, two of the hardbound Cabela's 50th Anniversary Catalogs, and the hard drive, was my poplar board, then the brick hearth. None of the rounds got through the Mouser catalog, so all was good, if a bit messy.

Wifey's due in any moment from work and I've vacuumed but not put all of the paraphernalia away... most is still on the dining room table! Got to get busy!

I'll make some posts later... after supper and Wifey has retired for the night.

I bought a 10/22 carbine last year. If your looking for an inexpensive 22 rifle there pretty hard to beat. The aftermarket accessories for them are endless. If I remember I paid $215 at the local GS.

If I were to get a new .22 it would be a 10-22 as well. I have a Marlin Model 60 and a Marlin 882SS 22 mag. now. The Model 60 is very accurate and picky about ammo it will not feed the cheap bulk ammo. I will not part with my Model 60 as my mom and I went to Buckeye Mart when I was 15 and she bought it for me. At any rate I think for the money and with all of the aftermarket options out there the 10-22 is a great little rifle. Just my opinion.

Wifey got home just before I made that last post.

After she changed and I got her a glass of wine to unwind with... and seated her in my computer chair, I showed her what I did today with the Ruger. She just said be careful.

The Ruger was $237 + 7% tax at Wally World, so that was the price to beat at the gun show, but the only stock 10/22's I saw were ~$260+tax and none like what I wanted.

I took a bunch of photos and several video clips, but I'm worried about posting some info on some of the stuff... like my Tipton Cleaning Patch Catcher that I tried to keep from spreading so much unburned powder about the living room. It had a somewhat quietening effect on the Subsonic and powderless .22 ammo that I tried. I also fired one of each without anything to lessen the sound... one Subsonic and then one powderless Colibrì round in quick succession... touching holes. The Subsonic Remington cycled well and loaded the Colibrì which fired but didn't move the bolt.:)

I'll have to work on that post later tonight, though... cooking and still doing chores.

I bought the M&P 15-22 new from a store in PA on Gunbroker for $330 delivered. I use it for CMP rimfire sporter matches and it works great. I did had the trigger done a little lighter.

Buy what you like and enjoy it. You can never have enough fun guns, especially in .22, you get to shoot for a long time with a $19 box of bullets.

Now beware that the AR style and 10/22 rifles both have a HUGE variety of aftermarket accessories available. If you get infected with accessorieitis it can get expensive.

I used my M&P 15-22 at a 2-day shoot this past weekend. It performed admirably. I also had the chance to shoot a 10-22, but it was not comfortable because of the length of the stock. LOL! I had a Magpul party after getting my 15-22.

My first choice if you could find one(hard to do now) is the Remington Nylon 22. They are light, shoot forever with minor maintenance and is a good size for kids and the wife( my wife claims it as her squirrel rifle). A Ruger is a good choice due to the amount of add-ons available and they are reasonbly priced. Also, there are a lot of used ones out there you may buy from a private gun show sale or citizen and no paperwork(at least here in S.C.)
Have fun looking.
