Choosing an SD ammo.

Anyone have problems feeding Speer Gold Dot 9mm +P 124gr. JHP?

(I have a P9, but any comments welcome, thanks.)

No problems with it in my CW9. In fact, I have one magazine that does not feed ball ammo very well if chambering a round via the slingshot method; the Gold Dot works much better in this regards in that magazine.

Shoots well in My PM9, it just runs well with anything I put in the magazine. I have not found any ammo that give it a problem even if I mix different ammo in the magazine

probalby the most popular round for kahrs. Runs well, very few issues with feeding. Kahr tests their guns with 124 grain ammo, so I am told, so I am gonna assume it is a HP round of some make..

Thank you, all! I'll check some out. I hope it works, especially given the following...

My P9 has managed 300 round of WWB FMJ so far without a problem. But, I tried 50 rounds of WWB JHP today (didn't even know there was such a thing until I saw it in the display case), and I had a failure to feed. The mag wouldn't eject until I locked the slide back, then the problem round came out with the magazine. I reseated it in the mag, and the rest of the rounds fired fine. (I made a note of which mag it was.)

It's concerning, coming after the recommended break in period yet so soon in my P9's career.

Maybe that first round got hung up and dipped down when you inserted the mag....was it the first round of a mag? I had a flat bottom mag holder that if the mag was pushed all the way down that 1st round would "level out" and slide slightly forward in the mag and that made the nose dive down and jam

The 9mm rounds in a Kahr magazine, especially the 7-rounder for a PM, are sometimes a problem. When fully loaded the top round can be wiggled up and down and work its way out in a loose magazine holder or your pocket. When a round is chambered, the next round is usually pulled along and positioned a bit forward. Sometimes it noses down and jams against the ramp or in the magazine, creating a jam that requires locking the slide back and dropping the magazine to clear. The 7-round PM mag does this more than the 6-rounder.
Most of us insert the magazine with the slide locked back, release the slide to chamber a round and then drop the magazine and top it off, making sure all rounds are to the rear of the mag. If you chamber a round and don't make sure the remaining rounds are to the rear, the next round could be forward and dive as it is being pushed forward by the "stripper" part of the lower breech face. The 6-round mags don't seem to be as prone to this. Stronger springs and making sure the elevated part of the spring is forward to push up the follower in the front can help prevent this, but not totally eliminate the possibility.

I use angled-bottom, kydex mag carriers to prevent the rounds from working their way out. There has been at least one worst-case report of a 9mm mag emptying in a pocket or loose mag carrier... nylon-type, I guess.

My PM9 carry ammo is the Speer 124-gr Gold Dot +P short barrel version. It costs more than the regular because it's only available in 20-round boxes. It's a bonded bullet and very popular for defensive carry.

Thanks for the additional thoughts! I've noticed the angles first bullet problem. Thee failure was in the middle of the magazine. The failure was consistent with the sort of feeding problem you all are describing, though -- the bullet's nose was low and jammed horizontal near the feed ramp.

Good idea about the angled mag carrier, though in my case the mag had been sitting on the range table in front of me before use. Maybe that doesn't matter, though, because yesterday one of the P9 mags I'd loaded and placed on the range table spontaneously spit out a round -- I wasn't even touching it. I hope the 7-round mag isn't the problem since that's the standard magazine for the P9 that doesn't stick out the bottom of the gun.

I've heard of the short barreled version of the Speer. It sounds very promising! Mas Ayoob wrote about it saying he wasn't aware of any actual defensive shooting data on it, yet, so I shied away from it. That was last Summer, so maybe something has happened since.

Thanks again for the additional ideas!

Something else you might want to try is polshing the feed ramp a little and cleaning the inside of the mags. Might not be the problem but it won't hurt to do it.

I've only owned perhaps a half-dozen handguns, so take this for what it's worth. I've never seen a handgun out of the box with a feed ramp as highly polished as the CW9 I purchased yesterday. I thought it might be chromed. Just shouts "QUALITY!"

More good suggestions, thanks all. I did the Jocko prep before this happened, so the feed ramp had been polished. I also had taken apart the magazine for inspection and sanding the lips, per Jocko's recommendations.

I went to the range again today:
100 rounds WWB
100 rounds Remington 'generic' JHPs
40 rounds Speer Gold Dot +P 124 gr.

No stoppages, including alternating half of the rounds between FMJ and JHP in the same mag. I also took some one-hand and weak-hand shots and some fairly rapid double taps. I didn't have any more of the WWB JHPs that FTF'd last time out, but I want to try another box to see if the gun just doesn't like that ammo. Anyway, that brings me to 590 total rounds with just the one FTF at around 300.

Things I changed today: As before, one of the magazine shot out the top round as it lay untouched on the table. (I made a note of which mag it was.) So, I started making triple sure all the mags were neatly loaded. It didn't happen again. I also started running the gun even more wet -- it was very wet before, but today I had about as much lube as I could get to stick to the gun.

I want to run another 160 rounds of the Speer and another few hundred FMJs and cheap JHPs without an incident before I can really feel good about the reliability of the gun. At this point I'm just hoping it was an extended break in issue that won't return. I'm also not willing to trust that one self-ejecting, jumping bean of a magazine.

Thanks all!
