Today was a mess of fun.
Not related directly to Kahr's but it it is gun related. Let me share:
I'm 50, I started shooting when I was 8 or 9. My first gun of my own was a H&R "Plainsman" Model 865 5 shot bolt action .22 with a 22" barrel, got it when I was about 12 or so. My dad had bought it before I was born, so it was made some time in the 50's (they were introduced in 1949 and I was born in 59).
My wife and I have been married for 30 years and she has not been a gun fan until this year, so my little .22 has not been fired in over 25 years. Last time I remember shooting it was squirrel hunting with an ex brother-in-law. It had fell from a closet shelf and broke the stock 10 years or so back, got a replacement 6 or 7 years ago that didn't quite fit right. Well, today I fit the stock and then the wife and I spent 3 hours looking for the magazine - knew it was here somewhere . I cleaned and lubed it better than I ever remember doing as a kid. Man was it dirty.
This afternoon I shot it free hand from about 50 feet and landed all 10 shots in a 2 inch circle. I can't describe how good it felt to shoot that gun again. When I was a teenager I would leave home and walk through the woods for hours. I would hunt ground hogs, squirrels, grouse, pheasant and anything else that was edible and in season. I got to be a pretty good shot with that old gun and it was so much fun to shoot it again.
I'm not real happy with the replacement stock, I think I might make one out of curly cherry, hard chrome the barrel and then put a scope on it and use it strictly for target shooting. BTW, I discovered an old add online today (Popular Science) for it when it was introduced in 1949; it sold for $23.95. I need to find another magazine or two for it.
We shot a couple hundred rounds in the side yard of .22, 380, 9mm (my CW9) and .40 this afternoon between my wife, son and I. Gave the son a go with the old .22 as well - he loved it.
It was a good day....
