View Full Version : How to tell if a P40 Covert is factory or not?

I have a P40 covert I bought used that I absolutely love! I've always thought it was an aftermarket covert rather than a factory one simply because I thought the texture on the grip would have been more like the texture on a PM40 (doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the grip, but stops and smooths out about a 1/4" from the bottom).

I didn't get a box with the gun, but it did come with the flush mount and extended mags (obviously could have been bought separately).

Then I saw the P40 Factory Covert in the Marketplace today that has the box pictured that says Covert... that guns looks exactly like mine except it has the tapered end where mine has a blunt end (front of slide).

The serial # is ZA2345 and I didn't find anything in the Kahr Tech Serial # thread to help me figure it out.

Any help is appreciated (not that I really care, but would like to know!).

Did I say I love this gun!? It shoots great and is very reliable.

Thx,
Scott

Actually, yes... I just emailed them for a question I have on the slide stop of a T40 and figured I'd ask them about the P40 manufacture date and whether it is a factory covert or not. I'll keep you posted...

Was just wondering if someone here knew how to tell just from something specific on the gun... thanks anyway!

Keep in mind the frame on the PM series was changed. On earlier ones the texture did go all the way to the bottom of the grip.

AZ - this is the one I referenced in my original post... I was surprised that one was a factory covert... it looks exactly like mine except for the taper at the front of the slide. That is what got me thinking that maybe mine is a factory covert! :) I love it no matter what, but I'd rather it was a factory job than aftermarket.

JB, good to know the grips changed... I was a bit surprised the gun AZ provided the link to has the taper slide and the grip is still like mine... I'm guessing mine was made around 2000.... but the tapered slide I thought was a lot newer than that... do you know when the grip texture changes were made?

Hopefully I'll find out from Kahr fairly soon.

Thx, Scott

Well, Jay at Kahr did not confirm when it was made, but he did confirm it is a factory covert! :)

Well heck yea! Thats great news. Even though you obviously love it either way it's better to love the factory version for sure.

Good for you............

I'll have to admit... I picked this gun up as a P40 sight-unseen. When I got there I thought, GREAT, I was considering chopping it anyway, so just go for it... a quick visual examination showed a professional chop job, but due to the texture, stippling, etc.. going all the way down to the bottom of the grip and really looking like it was filed and sanded to be round and smooth at the bottom I just couldn't believe it was a factory job... then when I saw the one for sale in the marketplace it took me by surprise, so I started thinking!

You're right, it honestly doesn't matter, but I am a bit happier knowing its a kahr factory covert. :)

Thx, Scott

Thx, Scott

Kahr should never had dropped the covert, but I would think when the PM series came out, it kinda killed the covert...

Personally, pocket carry isn't very comfortable for me. I've pocket carried an LCP a bit and plan to do so now with my P380 (once reliable). I'm trying to get used to pocket carrying my PM9 but am struggling... thought if I could get used to it the P380 would be easy!

Once pocket carry is out of the picture, I personally like the covert better than the PM because I find the extra 1/2" or so of barrel no harder to carry than the PM and it give a little more length for accuracy and possibly velocity. So I agree the covert is fantastic.

My biggest problem now is liking the 9mm... it shoots SO soft, but I'm getting addicted to the recoil of the 40 in these small guns and find myself grabbing the P40 over the PM9 everytime!

Oh well, not a bad problem to have! :)
