View Full Version : Snappier loads cause pre-mature slide lockback?

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this...

When I first got my PM9 (used, already broken in) I ran 100 rounds through it with literally no problem. Then I ran 30-50 (can't recall) +P SD rounds through it and had a handful (4-5?) slide lock backs with rounds still in the mag. I didn't think too much of it but it did stick in my head...

Well, got to shoot my first new reloads this past weekend and noticed the same thing. This time was with my reliable P40 covert and a new MK40 (again, used). I made up 180 gr FMJ (precision delta) with Clays and with Bullseye... both with the minimal starting loads... the Clays were VERY soft shooting and I loved them! The Bullseye loads were noticably more snappy than the Clays and a bit more snappy than the range ammo I'd been shooting (Blazer, WWB). In roughly 50-75 rounds of each, I had zero premature lockbacks with the Clays but probably 6-8 with the Bullseye loads... consistent across both guns.

I am confident it wasn't my thumb hitting the slide stop... All I can chalk it up to is the snappier loads causing the slide stop to engage... is this possible?

P.S. I now understand why some folks like the all steel kahrs... although I don't mind the .40 recoil, the felt recoil of the MK was night and day different than the P40 Covert... the MK just stayed right on target while the P40 had to re-acquire the target... and the grips (wood grips) on the MK really filled my hand well.. what a super machine!

Scott, I see no one has answered you so I will try. I have not shot +P in my guns. Take the slide off. Insert slide stop. Insert loaded mag. See if the bullet touches the slide stop on the inside. Push the mag up with your hand & check. Wiggle the shell & mag around, if it will. I had to take a stone & take a little off of my slide stop on the inside to get a little more clearance from the bullet. Maybe the heavy recoil is letting the bullet make contact. Hope this helps.

refer to the kahr tech section and hit on the sticky PROPPER PREPPINGOF YOURNEW KAHR. It willtell the two things that might be causingyour issues and how to fix them.

It is not the snappier rounds causing it..

jeremiah/az hit on one of the possable issues..

Wow, so I have a couple guns now (P40 and MK40) that have premature slide locks and one (T40) that refuses to lock the slide.

I'll field strip and evaluate the slide stops with loaded mags. I do not anticipate finding anything... the rounds I'm shooting when the issue occurs are identical (physically) to the ones I'm shooting that do not cause the problem. I know I have the slide stops installed correctly, and I'll verify the slide stop spring is tight, so I'm guessing that leaves 'weak wristing'... guess I need to hit the gym! :o
