View Full Version : Report on NAA Mini-Revolver
This is a follow up to a previous post where the muzzle flip on the NAA mini-revolver was mentioned...
I took my little NAA out to day and put a little over 20 rounds through it. I would have done more but you would have had to "pry the gun from my cold dead fingers".
Needless to say my hands got seriously cold. It is still wintertime here in the hinterlands.... I had not shot the little gun for a while. I did get a little muzzle flip but nothing that would deter me from taking a quick first or second shot. The gun is really designed for "real close" point and shoot. Now it is only a little 22LR and I am not sure how a 22 mag would have faired. Probably would have much more muzzle flip.
Certainly no replacement for my PM9 but..., I will still carry this when the need for something really small is required. :D

WMD, we spoke of this briefly in a PM where I mentioned I couldn't hold on to mine. I never dropped it but a few times it was nearly a shoot and catch proposition. I was indoors, it was a bit chilly but not terribly cold.
I was to the point of putting my weak hand thumb on the cylinder to try and keep it from jumping out of my strong hand.
Were you using just one hand or trying to get a second hand on it as well?
My son, bigger than me kept getting his thumb smacked each shot. I planned to just throw it in my display case but do find the thought of having it with me as a 3rd gun appealing.
I only hit my target once out of my 5 shots but to be honest I was focusing on trying to hang on rather than hit. Actually I think my son is the one that hit, I don't think I did. Granted the target was maybe 15 ft away which is a stretch for one of these.
I will try it again next trip, maybe I just had too many hands in the mix.

Forgot to mention on the same range trip we shot my sons Smith Mtn gun 44 mag. Haven't shot 44 in a long time. The concussion indoors was tremendous but surprisingly I hit very well with it.
Actually, I was shooting with one hand. I wrapped my middle finger around the grip and, with the finger next to my middle finger, it "kinda" grabbed a bit of grip I used my thumb to **** the gun, and of course, the index finger to squeeze the trigger. As I continued to shoot, I noticed I was relaxing my grip a little bit which allowed a bit more muzzle flip. Still no issue however, when I grabbed the hammer with my thumb, the gun would reseat itself in my hand. The muzzle would flip up maybe a half inch to an inch. Hopefully, my description makes sense.
I was shooting at a target about 7 yards away. To be honest, I was not paying much attention to where I was hitting. This gun is for real close up shooting. Forget trying to sight down the barrel and hit the target. I tried that and could not really see where I was hitting. For what it is, I think it could save your life in a pinch.

I have the 22mag Pug, I think they make a great "always carry" gun that will get the job done; even if you miss the noise will scare 'em away.

You got alot more handle to hang on to. I thought of some bigger grips. I know a guy that can do that. Kind of a wood butcher but should be able to handle this. Mine is just tiny. I'll try it again though one handed maybe held down some and not even try to aim as like WMD said there isn't much point of it anyhow.

I have a gun the same size that was made by Freedom Arms. I bought a set of grips that are about an inch longer than the originals. That makes it much easier to hang on to. Can't remember where I got them. Those little guns make a handy snake gun with bird shot. I always have it in my pocket in the summer time.

I have one of these little guys in .22LR. I've never fired it and kind of think of it as charm or key ring fob.

I thought that very thing myself. I actually thought of making it into an ear ring but I'm petrified of someone driving an ice pick thru my ear lobe. Always ask little girls that got earrings and they say it don't hurt??? One even called me a wuuuus. Can you believe that?
Same with tatoos, always wanted the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria all sinking on my chest but thats a load of skin punctures right there. Makes me cry just thinking about it.
An NAA mini .22 mag has been my "nowhere to hide a gun" carry piece forever. I've had no problem controlling it at all after practice. Perhaps a singular advantage of small hands. I switched from the 1 1/8 inch barrel version to the 1 5/8 despite the extra length because the shorter barrel keyholes. Might sound trivial to some but for me that affects acceptable performance at knife fighting distance. To anyone who thinks of these as toys...might want to rethink that. I have a friend who's still alive and undamaged because she carried a .22lr version packed in a jeans watch pocket.
That is how I feel about the little gun as well. Definitely not a toy. Certainly not the best CCW but it sure beats nothing! I would not want to get hit with it, that's for sure....! I will definitely continue to carry it when the PM9 cannot be carried.

I may have mentioned it here before, but I have a buddy that is a former state trooper that carries a mini-mag (1-1/8") in his left pants pocket all the time, most often his only carry. Problem is, he doesn't use a pocket holster and often forgets the whole hygiene thing. At our last dove grilling session someone asked if he would let them shoot it... the hammer dropped five times on nothing. Turned out that he finally decided to clean it up a bit and found enough lint buried inside to make a sweater, two pairs of socks and a pair of mittens. He swears he can consistantly hit 12 inch plates at 20 yards with it. Those things have been on my want list for many, many years. I would be willing to pay $200 for a NIB 1-5/8" mini-mag with additional factory tuned .22lr cylinder, but not much more.

If you like you can have the original take off grips if they are any better than what you have.:music:

I'm never without mine.
When I'm somewhere I don't like the suroundings, it's in the palm of my hand until I feel the threat is gone.
I'm happy that it keyholes, as that will cause more damage, and works best at bad breath range.
And the muzzle flash is minimal when the barrel is touching the target, as is muzzle flip.
For those who cannot make grips, a folding grip that fills the hand is available.

Dang! I hated mine. It was just .22LR and I could only hit a barn with it if I was inside! I tried many times to shoot something just to see where the POA was... but couldn't find the POI!!
It was a brutal little piece with sharp edges on everything, especially the rear of the cylinder which cut my thumb several times. The plastic stocks cracked... both... and I had to epoxy them on. I replaced it with an Interarms Walther stainless TPH in .22LR. I could hit a 4" bull at 15 yards and felt okay that 7 Stingers would be some kind of defense, IF you kept fresh ammo in it. Long-carried rimfire ammo doesn't have a great track record if you're talking life and death situations... I mean it might not fire!
I used the gun on several occasions and had clicks instead of bangs. At least you could double action and strike several times, but that was not a guarantee that it would EVER fire, so I got fresh ammo and changed it more often.
I saw online test results where Stingers were STILL considered the best round for a 2 1/2 inch barrel... with deep penetration, but no expansion... the round having been designed for RIFLES. I was surprised, happily, to find the bullets were going over 1000 fps leaving the TPH barrel... I had thought maybe 700 fps or so.
My P380 weighs less than the TPH, which is why I got it... wanting a center-fire and real gun for defense. The tiny derringer sucks big time for primary defense. As a backup, I guess it's better than a rock... maybe.
The TPH was and still is the ONLY gun that I have that I use the safety on... because it could fire if dropped with the chamber loaded. I kept the firing pin of the derringer between rounds.
JMHO!!!

I'm with Wynn on this one... wanted one forever... finally bite the bulletand got myself the 1 1/8" LR version for Xmas 2 years ago... took it out and shot it 105 times at the indoor range and could hit a man sized target at 5-7 yds but really had trouble cocking it, holding it, and shooting it due to size and practically no grip. recoil wasn't a problem, just holding and cocking it was difficult enough.... I recently sold it when I realized I never carried it... it was like a cool piece of jewelry that I hated (sharp edges so it wasn't comfortable in a pocket)... and I'd ALWAYS grab my LCP instead... so they are neat little pieces but the novelty wore off and it left the collection... Glad you guys like yours.

Wyn:
I HAD an Iver Johnson TP22, a poor man's Walther, and carried it for a while.
The slide would slice open the knuckle of my thumb pretty regularly.
I rounded it off but it still would injure my thumb.
My usual carry gun cycle is buy one, try it, but another, try it, trade those two in on another....repeat.
That keeps the LGSs in business.

I've been sizing up a .22 mag Pug for several months now, but have resisted temptation so far. I know I "want" one, but it's hard to justify spending the money for a new one. If I ever see a used one cheap at a show or in a store, I might have to upgrade my "want" to "NEED".

I'm learning more and more about these tiny little guns. Jeepster just told me the PUG actually comes with XS sights. Its a nice looking little thing. Not sure what they sell for and I don't have one on my list but it's nice.

The way I was taught to shoot them (by a cop) is to draw and hold the grip in my off hand (I pinch it between my thumb and index finger).
I **** the hammer and pull the trigger with my dominant hand wrapped around my weak hand. Works very well.
Since it is a secondary type of weapon I carry it on my weak side which works perfectly.
Made a little vid of it:

After watching this video, I'm rethinking my current though about getting one if these. Either this guy has zero marksmanship skills, or it really is difficult to shoot these little boogers.
The annotated comments were the best part of the video for me.

Interesting video...., I noticed you are using two hands and like the way you are shooting it. If I understand, you are doing a variation of "fanning" the revolver.
When at YT to see your video, I also came across this video of some dude shooting one handed usimng the same technique I do. Notice..., he is only getting a little muzzle flip.

Mine is paper plate accurate at 20 feet. I bet the guy with misfires still had his thumb on the hammer when he triggered it. I don't recall any misfires in 3-4 years. I am not really fanning mine just grip with one hand then clamp my grip down with my strong side (left) as I pull back on hammer with thumb and releasing trigger with index finger.
I am just spraying in that vid. No target in mind, aiming into my woods. Having fun.

I intend to give your method a try. I was actually tryng to hold the cylinder and top strap with finger and thumb so I wouldn't drop the thing.
I'm also gonna try WMD's one hand method, maybe I was just trying to hold to much.
It was trying to jump out of my hand every shot.
Jeepsters slightly large grips might help alot.

I got these grips from Jeepster in the mail today and they are a huge improvement over the tiny little grips that were on mine. I suspect I'll be able to hang onto the thing pretty good now.
While they don't seem to fit real tight, kind of a slip over situation they seem to stay secure while holding it and more hand filling.
Might try making a set out of wood useing these as a guide for outside dimensions, see what I can come up with.
Thanks for sending these Jeepster, your on my pay back list.
