I found this photo album on Flickr and thought it might be of interest here. The owner appears to have made some K9 grips out of a bamboo cutting board. There are also some photos of what appear to be DIY magazine base plates.

Too bad he says they split after a few rounds. They didn't look horrible, but I'll stick to our very own master craftsman.

Nice find. This guy is talented with common items like the leather holster he made out of an old boot.

I never worked with bamboo but heard it's pretty tough stuff. I suspect if he turned them so the grain rain vertical like normal they probably wouldn't split. To me they would look better too. Can't grasp the horizontal grain too good.
He did a nice job on them.

They do look great, but bamboo is actually a very soft wood. I'd wonder about the split with the grain running either way.
Much better use for a cutting board though ...... and kudos on the holster. The guy seems to be a practical kind of person.

I wish I cold say I liked those grips but I just can't. the workmanship is certainly there but those grips just do not bend my crank..
