View Full Version : Sons of Guns
OK, we have a thread going on about Top Shot, how about "Sons of Guns"? Anyone watch that program? I have seen it 3 times and am not terribly impressed.
I watched them cut down a 12 gauge shotgun barrel and then cut off the butstock at the grip. Uh...... barrel is clearly below legal limits and is now a pistol.... Isn't that a felony?
The guy in charge (forget his name) has made some other pretty dumb statements. Not sure he is playing with a full deck of cards.....
Any one else check it out?

Interesting to watch. The owner is a bit eccentric. There SBR'ing of a Thompson sub machine gun last night was pretty awesome. I have fired hundreds of rounds thru a Thompson and once you get used to them they are fantastic fun to shoot.

i have been watching it. they seem to be a class 3 weapons manufacturer dealing with NFA weapons. so as long as the proper forms are filled out and approved with the BATFE there should be no problem. I would love to have one of the shotguns with a silencer! over all i think its an interesting show.

I'm not terribly impressed either. They seem to deal mainly in stuff for LE which is fine. I didn't much care for what they did to the Tommy. Light rails on a Tommy should be sin.
The did make an AR with an attached breaching shotgun underneath that had merit although it looked enwieldy to me. The guy on the SWAT team seemed to like it.
I suspect it's gonna get like that bike building show and alot more drama to spice things up.
Same with Top Gun as someone mentioned I think they have to seek these people out.
I watch Survivor just to see if they can find more pathetic people than the season before and they almost always do. When they can't the bring back pathetic losers from seasons past.
Most of them people got no business being anyplace without walk and don't walk signs, thats for sure.

+1 for enjoying the show but not caring for what they did to that tommy. if you want a modern .45 full auto the kriss would be a no brainer decision. check out the future weapons feature on this weapon on youtube. sick

It's a good show - better than most of the drivel on TV these days. Agreed on the Thompson, but if the sheriff is the one asking (and is paying), wouldn't you do what he asks? Isn't the customer (almost) always right, especially if he's carrying a badge?

Your right but it's also like hanging a laser on a SAA Colt. It can be done but it's a total lack of respect for history.

I like the show, don't like the way they treat beginners and people who walk in. Glad not all gun dealers decide to not sell to those who they don't feel are qualified, if so no one could begin.

Oh well. As has been posted the man with the money says what is a sin and what is not. If that sheriff wants it so be it.

I like the show and will continue to watch...This week they mount a semi auto shotgun on an ATV for a wounded combat vet that has lost the use of his right arm...I think thats cool for them to figure out a way to get that hero back into shooting...That is the side of the Sandbox War that is hidden from Americas view, all the vets that have lost arms, legs, eyes etc and are still just kids... War is he!! but but GD it if you fight a war fight to win...Use our air power and get it done, collateral damage be damned, kick a$$ and take names and stop bringing these mangled men and women back home to suffer the rest of their life for nothing...Now back to Sons of Guns...I didn't care for the butchering of the Tommy Gun and really don't believe any law enforcement agency would want or allow such a weapon due to the liability factor when there are many other factory made rifles that would fill the need better and probably wouldn't cost half as much as that custom job did...All in all I like the show and really love the title song "Shelter Me" sung by Tab Benoit, sounds like a combination between Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King...Cool song....Now for Top Shot, I like the shooting part until they get into stupid stuff like shooting at targets while riding a zip line and the other crap thats just for drama back at their dorm rooms...As for the guy "don't know his name" that runs the show, I want to punch him in the mouth...He obviously is in love with the sound of his voice and adds nothing to the show...If he would just explain to the shooters what the drill was and stop doing all the play by play crap it would be better...To me he makes the show too hard to watch and I had high hopes for this seasons episodes....

After season 1 of Top Shot I was pretty skeptical of season 2 and I was correct in that the shooting is a minor player in the show and the personalities in play is a primary factor in season 2. Most of them need to be shoved into a deep hole and covered with dirt.

Agreed. Most of the actual shooting competition is interesting... and comprises perhaps eight minutes of the hour show... the remainder being commercials and drama queen BS.
If I could TIVO it, I would continue to watch it and zip through the junk for the shooting. But alas, the wife already has HER shows set to record in that time slot, and my TIVO set-up will only "do" two shows at once.
So pardon me while I yawn, and go back to amusing myself in front of my Dillon 550B...;)

It's all drama reality TV. Survivor, Biggest Loser (where they take big fat tough people and turn them into skinny sniffling babies), Top Shot with a Survivor contestant as host who clones the host of Survivor.
Your Dillon is much more entertaining in my opinion.
What ever happened to Dobie Gillis (Maynard G. Crebs WORK! and F troop. ) Now that was solid entertainment.
I do find it surprising that the pro's aren't hitting all that well. There really is no one shooter that dominates a particular contest. You would at least think the pistol guy would be really good at a pistol competition. The pro's are used to shooting under pressure so...., what is holding them back?
In terms of the wounded warrior bit. I think it is great that they are doing it but also realize, they are marketing the human interest story for ratings.

I'm surprised at myself for still watching,Top Shot that is, I enjoy the shooting, and the variety of weapons, but that host is so freakin annoying. I suppose he is told to do a play by play enerjetic call, but, it's damned irritating.
As far as reality shows go, I watched the very first season of Survivor, but could not force myself to watch the second, and have not watched since.
Survivor and American Chopper have pretty much ruined the reality format for me, just can't stomach the petty bickering, and melodrama.
I got more enjoyment cleaning my CW9, and helping my son clean his S&W .40,and giving my 10-22 a facelift than any tv show.

You do realize that their shop is not the corner gun store where you buy a midnight special because you got robbed, right?
They are a specialty shop that deals in "other" types of guns.

Yes I do, but he takes the time to ask them if they've shot before or handled a gun, and doesn't deny them until after that. There's a polite way of doing things and a smug way, their way is smug. And then on interview states no desire to deal with anyone who has no experience with guns. Their attitude is "why are you walking into my store". I've tried to see if there's a sign out front explaining this, but from the views I've seen, I haven't. I've dealt with guys like them at our local gun show. I was trying to get some info on an old colt woodsman my grandfather left me and the booth owner walked away from me in mid conversation, his employee, embarrassed, tried to apologize, but why bother, I'd NEVER by a gun or anything else from the jerk at that point anyway. It's almost like they all suffer from some sort of autism.

I saw this with my head held in shame.... I kinda like the show :) I absolutely hate reality TV, and this is as close as I get. I do like how the shop seems to run smoothly. Everyone works as a team, which is great. I cant stand the shows that are 10% content and 90% drama (eh HEMM Orange Co. Choppers LOL). His daughter could be cute after a few dozen beers, but she's still obnoxious as hell. You can tell those guys honestly love what they do, which is cool. Plus...a silenced Saiga?? Mad dope, yo.

I think I've watched every show so far thanks to the miracle of DVR. Not your typical gun shop so I don't fault them for being less than enthusiastic helping new to guns folks out with their first weapon. Their typical register ring per sale has been $1500 plus. Hard to really get into the engineering aspects of what they do since they cram a week of design and build into 10 minutes. I think I would enjoy the show more if they only worked on one project at a time. I don't think I've seen anything yet that I would just die to have one of. Well, maybe that Katana would be a nice to have item.

I like the show so far, enough to keep watching anyway. I was pretty into AKs for many years, and they do some very nice looking conversions. That integrally suppressed AK was very nice. Actually got me running through guns I don't need to see if I could fund one...
Came to my senses though. If I throw a can on anything it will be my DSA TP9. :D

Regardless of your take on the show, they have a pretty good reputation for quality firearms and products. Their shop is not too far from where I work.... I may need to get in to see about the suppressed Saiga 12!! :-D

I hear ya. To be honest, I don't think they sell regular guns to anybody. Maybe he asks about their knowledge so he can refer them someplace if needed, I did see him give a female that came in by herself saying she was robbed somebody's name and said to go there. Then in the interview it was just like you said, sort of holier than though.
Might be a TV thing maybe. I can not afford anything he sells so it really doesn't matter.

Oh now THAT is cool! I wonder why I haven't seen that before. Oh yeah...I live in Kommiefornia.
Re: the Sons of Guns, I like what they build and the quality seems to be there. I could do without the drama...which I am sure is per Hollywood. The daughter is kinda cute but a bit of a gun-snob/B IMHO and the intern is a bit of a village idiot with minimal if no tool skills at all...but we all started somewhere I guess.
Re: the Tommy-gun, remember that it was a "replica" with a real drum. They didn't alter the drum (smart) and just fooled around with the rest. Personally, it was OK but not earth shattering design and no great loss since it was a copy. You would think that the department would have access to much nicer rifles (H&K 91A2 type etc.). I think it was more for show as his business is in/near the township that requested the work. A little PR for the po-po and hopefully deter the bad guys a bit.
Off soapbox now.
