I'm not sure how new "new" is but I'll tell you what think is true. I have an older style Mini-14 - nit the Ranch Rifle. I've had it about ten years, maybe longer. I believe the newer guns are made on new equipment in the Ruger factory. The newer Mini-14s are all Ranch Rifles and have heavier barrels. That's all I know.
I have an older mini-30 in stainless steel with composite stock. It is an outstanding carbine. I would have to guess the new tactical version is just as good. Ruger's consistency as a manufacturer is excellent. If you are looking for a quality carbine in 30 caliber, you will not go wrong with the Mini-30 in any configuration. I would definitely do the Ruger over the AR clone in 7.62x39. In recent tests, the mini-30 was more accurate and 100% reliable, even using steel cased ammo.

A friend of mine recently got one and he is very happy with it, I understand that Ruger recently changed the barrel and the brackets to make it more accurate.
All I can tell you is that it looks great and that it is in my ever growing wish list.

My buddy has an older Mini 30, and he loves it. It's pretty accurate, so if they improved on the accuracy any, it should be a mighty fine weapon. Just don't buy any freakin WOLF ammunition. Most of the russian ammo I've tried, has been pretty decent, but Wolf sucks. Seems like you get at least one dud round out of 20. The other Russian stuff I've tried you get 1 dud in maybe 400 or 500. I use that for practice and plinking, and buy some good American made HP's for home defense and hunting out at the farm.
