We have all met him at some point in our quest for the perfect gun. He's like the troll under the bridge, lurking behind some counter at the gun store, just waiting to spew his toxic plethora of biased, unfounded disapproval of any gun or caliber you like. He is, the ultimate gun expert. Slayer of a thousand home intruders and master of close quarters combat. Post the details of your battles with the dreaded gun expert!

I've met a few but since my hearing is way bad and always forget to put the damn things on, they could be talking to a post (and probably get more out of the post).
jocko - you posted just before me! Can't imagine why he doesn't like you any more.
BTW- Welcome to the zoo. Good first post. We'll get a lot of mileage out of this one I'm sure.

I've got a bunch but none are floating to the top of my memory at the moment. I've worked in a gunshop on a on the job training deal and it was crazy.
I think the whole deal is getting opinions and facts completely mixed up.
I did have one of our dept suppliers who I was acquiring a gun for one of the officers from tell me not to even think about night sights on it. I read that as they are not available. The officer really wanted night sights. I did a little more research and the bottom line is the dealer employee didn't believe that night sights were needed on a back up gun "Opinion". I contacted the guy , a good friend in charge of the LE part and told him about it.
I welcome opinions but I need them described as such. I've not dealt with the opinion dude since, not even once.

Yep! I think it's Opinion is what you see, fact, what others see!

I used to work with a man who was not only a gun expert but an expert on all things.Guns, fishing, skydiving, hot air baloons, yeast infections, whatever.Anything you ever did,he had done except better and bigger.
One day ,in the break room at lunch,he interrupted a conversation I was having with another co-worker concerning an upcoming trip to Florida.Of course he knew more about Florida than Ponce de Leon and he started to hold forth.I had endured this blowhard for as long as I could stand it so I decided to gently cut him off at the knees.
When he had finally finished his spiel,I made the following statement.[It was a total falsehood but it did shut him up for good.]
I said "Jim,one time I performed oral sex on a guy so well that he left his wife and three kids to come after me.Now,have you ever done better than that?'
There was stunned silence in the crowded breakroom for a moment and then an explosion of laughter. It got away with him so badly that he never interrupted me again. Some of the guys later told me that they would have payed a steep admission price to see the look on his face.I had rendered him speechless and that had never been done before.I`m just glad that I was gentle and diplomatic.

Naw,nobody followed me.Most of the guys knew that I had a twisted sense of humor and they generally gave me a wide berth but the gasbag didn`t have the sense to do so.He learned.

Yeah, you also see that by forum. The only gun worth owning on the 1911 Forums is 1911, Glock on the Glock forum, etc. We recognize other guns on this forum but don't tell Justin! I look at it like we are secure in our Kahrs and don't need walls to keep out the competition. We welcome them all and try to educate without propaganda, like they are adults and can decide for themselves.

The shop I worked in for about a month was run like a car lot. They had me following around the sales manager who owned only one gun. A Sigma at that. He told me to watch what a customer looked at first and sell them that.
A little ole lady would come in and look at a 1911 and he'd be selling it to her. I saved all the little old ladies, every single one.
I as usual everywhere I've worked bucked the system and sold more guns than any of them. 9 times out of 10 they would leave empty handed first trip to ponder and think. The owner was like you lost a sale. I told him they will be back. They always did too, nearly everytime.
I never could make him understand that his policy of low inventory, we'll order for them didn't work. People want to hold stuff before they buy.
First and only job I ever got fired from, just got a call one morning told not to come in anymore even though I worked for free. My replacement lasted 1 day. New management a few years later.
Oh the owner told me I'd never make it at checkering, my work wasn't good enough. I hadn't made any grips at that point either but I'm sure he would have said they weren't up to snuff either.

And I'll never live it down either. I'm having a banner made to hang in my man cave. "NO PINK FOR JOCKO!".

I can`t remember the fellow`s name who came up with the idea for UPS but his college professor said that it wouldn`t work.Another "expert."

We had a one man run gun store, who claimed to be a gunsmith. He knew next to nothin' about guns, but he would not shut up long enough to even find out what the customer wanted. The worst blowhard that I ever met. He & the store did not last long.

Thats hilarious, for real though I have realized lately, that every guy thinks he is an expert on guns, cars, etc... Its to the point where I don't even speak I let them get it out of their system, or walk away.

Dude was Fred Smith, founder of FedEx. Core concept of the college paper was the "hub and spoke" approach where you fly packages into a central location, swap them around, and fly them back out again with most packages making only two hops. The paper was written for an economics class Smith was in. In an interview years later, Smith said he got a "C" from the professor in the class. Good business model - proof is in the pudding & Smith is a very rich man today.

Yep. That was the guy. I think i heard that it was for a masters or phd or something like that.
You know, if we all could just come up with that one good idea that no one else has ever thought about and market it........... think about how many guns we could buy to play around with, and have our own range for all of us to hang around and shoot at too.

I don't recall any of those blowhards right now, but like Bawanna, I sell more guns from my side of the counter than several workers there. Thing is, I listen, and offer advise based on what I'm told, and ALWAYS qualify it as such. The last blow hard I remember didn't last long, my retort was nowhere near as funny as Dietrich's but was cute. Wish I could remember it. Sometimes I'll play with them for a little while, then set them up, and sand bag them. That's pretty fun, but it takes time, so mostly I play dumb and walk away. If I get more than one in a particular store, I'm gone, and will not return. As for the idea, I have a couple that I need to machine (need my old shop for that), and patent, then we will all have our very own range, and bar (not at the same time of course).
