View Full Version : New PM9 in hand -- what kind of cleaner and lube?

OK...picked up my new PM9 this afternoon. Went to the sticky on how to break in a new Kahr. First off, the manual is near worthless when it comes to info about break-in and maintenance...so reading it once was a waste of time. Scratch item #1 on the list. Next...the guidance says to clean it but not lube the striker path. Most gun cleaners I've used in the past leave enough lube behind to be considered cleaners and lubes. So what cleaner should I use that DOESN'T leave lube behind? Based on my two-day pistol combat course last weekend, I've become a fan of FP10. CLP failed me and the training crew cleaned and lubed my 1911 so it ran like a sewing machine for the next 700+ rounds. I'll assume that that FP10 is also good for the Kahr...but the question remains...why not lube the striker path? It has metal on metal, and to me that implies it needs lube. I plan to have it all cleaned, lubed, and prepped according to the sticky and get to the range some time this weekend. Will keep you posted of the results. Carl

Your striker channel is all stainless, if you read the propper prepng of your new kahr, it will tell you exactly how top clean that striker channel and slide without taking it all apart. iling the striker channel is a crapola collector, it is not needed at all. If you buy gun scdrubber it willdo the job, although expensive. I recommend basically the same thing made by 3M company and it can be bought at any NAPA store. It comes in the most powerful spray can that I have ever used. It is non cholorinated, so it will harm nothing on your kahr, nadda, zero. Part #08880 for about $2 a can. It will clean that striker channel perfectly and if you do the method explained in that prepping thread, u will be good to go. If you definitely feel the need to lube that channel, lube away, ur not going to hurt anything but most will agree dry is better. Nice gun, break it in right and it will serve you well.
If u use the little clean out hole, it will take about 5 seconds longer to do a complete cleaning job, so just get used to spray cleaning that striker channel every timeyou clean the gun.. Shoot fmj ammo to break it in, don't worry about defense stuff until it is totally reliable. shoot american stuff. wwb from wal mart is avbout as low in price a sone can find and it is good ammo for range fodder.

Your FP10 will work just fine and dandy. The only place you don't want to leave lube behind is the striker channel. So there most use non clorinated brake cleaner or Gun Scrubber (basically the same thing) You just poke the nozzle in the cleanout hole, give her a blast, push down the drop safety catch towards the rear and give her another blast. This will blow stuff out the back. Done deal. If you got air close by I give it a little followup blast of air. Everything inside there is stainless so corrosion shouldn't be an issue. Any lube would attract stuff that might impede the striker and gum up the works.
If you ever tear the top end down where you have those parts out you can clean and I'll wipe oil on the striker and stuff then wipe it all off just so it's slick and pretty.
If you blast oil thru the clean out hole your just asking for trouble if my opinion.
Many like to use a little TW25 grease on the frame rails and contact points. Comes in a nifty little syringe deal, Jocko turned me onto that stuff and I like it immensely.
Any lube will do long as you get it in the right places, make it stay where it should and not where it shouldn't.

I think we hit the send button at the same time again. You were once again a little quicker on the draw. I had both hands in my pocket looking for my gun before I realized that I don't pocket carry.
Realized I didn't eat my banana at lunch, could happen to anyone. My bad.

Oh, anyone want a slightly mushy banana?

It's a commercially available (cleaner?) lubricant.

Hi,

New guy here (Intro: http://kahrtalk.com/showthread.php?t=5921) and just got the same info, from a stickie directed to by jocko, about the the 3M product. Thinking about heading downtown to get some this afternoon but hate making the trip for just one item.

Best of luck with your new gun. I use a little psych job on myself with new purchases; lower my expectations so that should there be issues I haven't bummed myself out. Just go about the business of making things right.

As I examine my PM9 closely I'm beginning to appreciate the relative costliness of the gun. Just take the cleanout hole for example, with a bunch of other guns your doing a detail strip of the slide in order to clean the channel of brass shavings, junk or whatever.

Take care...

sometimes those little things mean alot. My glock has a clean out hole on it to. If you cojmpare the glock slide to the kahr slide, they are very very similar. Juston Moon was an admirer of Gaston glock. The kahr slide is TANK built. They also put the best barrel money could buy in the pM9 also. Only about one thing better than a lothar barrel and that is two lothar barrels..welcome abaord Bill K. now just shoot that PM9 like you stole it..
