We have a thread for CW9, so I'm wondering what the p380 owners are using for their defensive ammo. I ordered some Speer Gold Dots and Federal Hydroshocks and see which one cycles my gun better.

Those are good. There are also Winchester Ranger T and if you want more oomph, Buffalo Bore +P rounds in 90-gr JHP and 95-gr FMJ-Flat Point.

I like those two choices.

From my P380:

Average of 10 shots. 60 degrees F.

Federal Tactical HydraShok 90 grain JHP - 872 fps
Speer Gold Dot 90 grain JHP - 904 fps

The Speer round is a little hotter as the velocity shows.

Hornady 90gr Critical Defense - 1000fps at the muzzle

Golden Loki did some ballistic gel tests using a KelTec P3AT.The top two performers out of the ammo they tested were as follows.

Corbon 90 gr.JHP penetrated 13.2 in. and expanded to .463 in.
Speer Gold Dot 90 gr.JHP penetrated 12.6 in.and expanded to .452 in.

If memory serves, these rounds were fired into a gel block covered with two layers of loose denim.

He did a nice testing back then. even the two rounds you mentioned IMO would be six of one and one half dozen of the other. Course #1 is reliablility, after than lots of great defense rounds out there. I'm kinda pro Corbon and Gold dots in my PM9. I shoot the power ball in my P380.

I carry Hornady Critical Defense and Corbon DPX. The DPX fills the carry mag in my P380. In the spare, I have dour rounds of Critical Defense followed by two rounds of DPX. Weird combo, I know, but I ran out of the DPX rounds to fill the mag up. Some DPX rounds in that box were used for function checks. They both run flawlessly in my P380. I would like to do some ballistics testing one day.

I like the Power Ball....works great and low recoil and muzzle flash...

Corbon DPX. Had two light strike ftf with them however. Just ordered 4 boxes of Remington Golden Sabers to try. Next might be Speer Gold Dots.

hard to blame light strikes on ammo. FTF is another story. U won'tr go wrong with GD either.

hard to blame light strikes on ammo....

...especially such quality ammo. But it's strange that after a few hundred rounds of ammo other than Corbon DPX, it's only one that had light primer strikes. Maybe just a coincidence.

There are so many good defensive rounds that have been produced in recent years that it is difficult to determine a best round. Depending on who you talk to, what you read, or which video you see, you could choose any number of rounds as best to carry. I have settled on Winchester PDX1 for my P380 and consider myself as well armed as anyone with a .380. It may not be the absolute best (if there is one), but I am confident that it will do the job as long as I do my part.
