Hey All!
I'm looking to refinish my 2nd set of Wood Grips.
Here's My 1st set (before staining). I sanded them about as thin as the stock K9 grips.

My question is...How thick is that metal plate inside of the grips?
I want to sand down a set of grips to make it as slim as my MK9 stock grips!
Has anyone ruined a set by sanding too much?
Bawanna? Any Advice for me?
Thanks

I've made 4 or 5 kahr grips and I did not inlay a metal plate. I've never seen the wood grips that Kahr sells so I'm not certain on their set up. It has to be very thin.

I made my as thin as they could be without the grip screws sticking out of the wood. The head of the screw is flush with the wood. Most pictures I've seen with wood grips on Kahrs have the screws deeply recessed. I never understood that unless they either want the strength or they are fitting the average hand. Nearly everyone thinks they are too thick that's I've heard from.

I'd break out the file and file away, then break out the sand paper and smooth em up. That area where the plate is is usually the weak link but if the grip fits properly it should be fine. I'd thin the bulk of the grip and try to leave as much as you can in that area with a smooth transition. You can take alot off.

Looking at your picture again I can see you could easily remove another 1/16 of an inch easy. There's plenty of wood in the trigger bar area also. You can slim those down alot more.

Thanks! Will give it a try.
Actually the Thick grips do feel nice in my hand. very comfortable. But I want concealability. after all, 'its suppose to be comforting, not comfortable' lol.
Also, as far as looks, it looks pretty dumb with thick bulky grips and then a tiny thin slide IMO.
I already ordered a 2nd set of grips just in case i mess up.
The other option is to try and remove the metal plate (at least one the non-trigger bar side). I will keep yall posted.
Note to Kahr... yall should really get Hogue to make some THIN wood grips, after all, your motto is "THIN IS SEXY" isn't it???

You'll also find that by rounding off the back, narrowing the back strap so to speak you'll get a much slimmer feel and also loose alot of the thick look without actually making the grip thinner.

The plus to leaving the back wide is it distributes the recoil over a larger area but recoil isn't a big issue on these anyhow.

I don't see any advantage to removing the plate myself. Wonder why theres a plate on the non trigger bar side anyhow. If you remove so much wood that the plate shows you've removed way too much wood and thats way to thin to be sexy.

Great advice about thinning the edges. i did that a little bit on the back strap to give it a thinner look/feel
actually i was gonna remove the plate to see how deep it goes, then jb weld it back in and start sanding away.
"If you remove so much wood that the plate shows you've removed way too much wood and thats way to thin to be sexy." HAHAHA ain't that the truth!
