View Full Version : ammo "sliding forward" after every round is chambered?

Hey guys,

I think i figured out why my PM9 had two failure to fires at the range recently. It seems when I insert a mag with the slide locked back, drop the slide release and let it chamber, the next round in the mag is sliding forward some. I did this about 20x over the last hour with 3 different brands of ammo and every single time I insert a mag / chamber the round, then drop the mag, the next round has slid forward. If i then cycle out the loaded round, re-insert the mag and chamber the next one and drop the mag again, the round after that has slid forward. Its doing this on every round after the previous one is chambered. I would think it could be a bad mag spring however it does the exact same thing on the 7rd also which has seen practically no use. This worrys me because if the rounds are sliding forward every time (some further then others), this can cause a major reliability issue the one time I might actually need to use it

Heres two pics showing what im talking about.......this was after a fresh mag was inserted, the slide was released to chamber the round, and the mag was dropped. Look how far the next round up to chamber has slid forward

normal, every Kahr performs this way, with the round moving forward after removing the mag.

only thing wrong with your gun is thatt your worrying to muych about someting that is normal in every kahr. Just shoot it like u stole it. kpm9 is dead right.

nice photos by the way.

Thanks for the info. This is my first Kahr product so this was worrying me b/c my other handguns do not do this when the mag is dropped. Guess its back to the range to see how another 150rds go

And thank you from me too! I had noticed that at the break-in range visit (new PM9). It didn't seem to affect the gun in any way, so I conditionally ignored it. Now you've saved me the research to find out it's NORMAL! :D

Yea man both of my Kahrs do this. I have a PM9 & a PM45. This condition on the PM9 is more pronounced than the PM45. Seems to do that more so when the magazine is topped off with more spring tension.
I have run many tests with just running with this condition and dropping the mag and pushing the next round back into place...both with the same result....no problems to feed or eject.
Just follow JOCKO's lead and ignore it. A failure to feed seems to be more of a result caused by either a weak magazine spring or the nose shape of the round.

Just shoot it like you stole it...! ;)

My PM9, Glock 19, CZ-75B, and 1911, all do this. I'd say it's pretty normal. :)

I was hoping this would be the reason my gun cant make it through a mag without a failure to fire.........looks like im on to a an entire new adventure trying to figure that out.........cant just send it to kahr b/c im not the original owner.......just picked this up from someone else this past weekend and it looked flawless

sublimeo24s. if u have a failure to fire, is that like your pulling the trigger and nothing ishappening. or are u have a failure to feed, where it is not feeding a round intothe chamber. two differnet issues here.

Have you cleaned out that stgriker channel using that little clean out hole in the bottom of your slide up by the gbreech face. refere the propper prepping of your new kahr i the tech section and also the lube chart, follow them to the T and if you have stillthe same issues, kahr does not know yo ar enot the original owner and if you callthem they will more than likely take care of you. I will PM u..

Those rounds sliding forward decrease the distance between the ogive of the bullet and the slide-stop nub. I believe this is a contributing factor to the premature slide-lock problem I was having.

I fixed mine by grinding the slide-stop nub back quite a bit....AND...making sure there is absolutely no oil/lube on the rounds or the mag. Oil/lube makes those rounds like greased pigs.

not sure about that. Kahr knows that top rounds runs forward, they have designed around it. My opinion is that kahr has gotten in a bunch of out of spec slide stops and that is where the issue lies. What u did was IMO the right thinbg to do. You just brought ur slide stop back within specs. A dry magazine IMO is a good magazine..
