Went shooting last Sunday and while at the range I picked up some Shooters Choice bore cleaner since they were out of Hoppes #9...I had never used it before and I made an interesting discovery...I was using an old tooth brush that I've used many times before to clean the forcing cone and black carbon off the cylinder front of one of my revolvers and it was working pretty good until the tooth brush melted and disintegrated, I mean it just dissolved!!!...I have always liked Hopps #9 and even liked the smell (I use it for aftershave) and it never melted anything...I wasn't wearing gloves and had Shooters Choice on my hands and it wasn't burning or anything but if it will desolve hard plastic it can't be too good for your skin or any plastic parts on the gun so I threw that stuff away and will pick up #9 to finish up tonight....

Appears to be some pretty potent stuff...

SHOOTER'S CHOICE BORE CLEANER

Removes Gilding Metal, Lead, Plastic & Powder Fouling

Dissolves bullet jacket and lead fouling, plus powder/carbon and plastic shotgun wad residues in just one step. No need for separate bore cleaner and oil. Shooter’s Choice also removes rust and corrosion and serves as a lubricant. Do be careful, it can damage stock finishes on contact. Will soften epoxy bedding materials or discolor nickel plate if left in contact with them.

I hope it was your wifes toothbrush. You know gingivitis and tooth decay are real concerns these days.

That stuff is pretty strong. I have some and use it in the bore of a rifle now and then but never leave it for long and don't use it for anything else.

I'm a big #9 man too. I do like Hoppes Elite and M Pro 7 (same exact stuff) for most cleaning. Works well, don't smell. Like using water, not oily or anthing. I know the #9 gets into your blood stream and can mess with ya too but I detest rubber gloves between me and my beloved guns.

I poured Shooters Choice on an old girlfriend and she disappeared too.

You crack me up Jocko! The idea is to use it before they're Xs. That way you avoid all those expensive divorce proceedings.

I like M-Pro 7. It works. Non-toxic so no gloves. No smell either so my wife lets me do it in the family room as we watch TV.

I've use a LOT of Shooter's Choice, and also #9 and particularly #9 Benchrest, which I prefer to all others (double the smell of regular #9!!!)

Never melted any of my "NRA toothbrushes" which I also use on my teeth, fwiw.

FYI..Kahr barrels are nickel plated, and hoppes warns of using it on nickel plated barrels...says so on the bottle. I use it on other barrels but not the PM9.

Shooter's Choice is the shiz for cleaning the forcing cones and chokes in shotguns. I buy it by the quart to keep my trap gun barrels free of lead and plastic wad buildup. It was a god send when it came to the market and if you can stomach the ammonia smell, it's still unmatched for dissolving lead and plastic deposits in smooth bores.

I don't use it on any of my other guns. For those, I use Eezox. Love the smell of ol' number 9, but I think better chemicals and cleaning methods have come along that can get the job done faster and easier. Just started using Ballistol and Bore Snakes. Seems to be a match made in heaven.

Nickel plating rears its ugly head again.

The warning on Hoppe's is for nickel plated arms that are traditionally plated with copper, then nickel in a series of electrolytic solutions. Ammonia in Hoppe's will dissolve the copper through pinholes in the nickel, resulting in cloudy dots, or whole cloudy patches, and in severe cases, lifting of the nickel.

Kahr barrels are "electroless" nickel, applied to the steel chemically. There is no copper to dissolve, and contact with ammonia will not have the same set of problems. Kahr them selves has said Hoppes and similar are ok to use, but cautioned against soaking parts for long periods in ammonia containing solvents.

You threw the shooters choice away? I wish I would have known that. I am out of it and would gladly have relieved you of it! :D I use the stuff a lot. It is a good cleaner and clearly removes the fouling from bores. Yes, it will melt plastic! The ammonia smell is intentionally put into the cleaner so children do not drink it. A six year old a few years back drank some #9 and died. I do not think that was the first case.

#9 is a good cleaner as well but not as good as shooters choice. You definitely do not want to leave nickel parts soaking in #9 for too long, they will discolor. The plating will get a dark tinge to it.

All that being said, I use #9 as well as Shooters Choice. I need to restock up on both. :D

The missus doesn't like the smell of #9 so much, but I always tell her it's the smell of victory.;)

hell guys, u can use hoppes to clean nickel plated barrels, just don't leave it sit in there and fester. It won't hurt a think. Ihave talke dot kahr about aht and thie answer isjust what I am tell you. Hoppe's has to put that on there as a disclaimer. I haven't seenb a nickjel plated barrel ruined yet by hoppes... If in doubt indeed don't use it. I have probably clenaed my pM9 barrel 300 times with #9, still seems like theday I bought it..
