This is Duchess (Dutch). She is a rescue with a tragic history. My wife and I have had her for three years and she is the most loyal and loving dog I've ever had. Smart as can be and is trained in German. She's bilingual don't ya know.

Good looking dog you have there. Many people overlook the rescues when considering a new dog. There are many different breeds out there that could use a good home and they can be some of the most loyal friends you will ever find in the dog world. Hopefully she will be with you for many years to come.

A big +1 on that, well said Just One shot.
The best soul I've ever known was my buddy Ripper. He was from the pound and with me for almost 15 years. He went ahead to scout the trail about six years ago. Ginger and Jack (both rescues) have been with us nearly as long and are outstanding companions in their own light. I'll be heading out later today to pickup the newest member to the family. She's currently a ward of the county.

I was thinking "Mister T":D

My family got a rescue dog about 3 years ago. It was the right decision - they are a great organization, and she's a sweet dog. But next time I need to make sure that I ask for a model that comes with a brain...

I can totally relate to that. A few years ago a Beagle won the Westminster dog show. It's family tree obviously wasn't on the same planet as my beagle.
First dog I ever provided money for. My wife and son went to a pet store and paid insane money. Granted she was a cute little bugger and a good dog but the stupidest critter on 4 legs I've ever encountered.

Never paid for a dog before this one. Had mostly labs, good dogs, all had some semblance of a brain.

I'll take the rescue pound critters any day.

Nice dog, Willieboy.
Ah, those pics bring back memories of my teen years when I used to care for our neighbor's German Shepherds. The doctor was born in Austria, and the dogs trained in German. It was a lot of fun taking care of them and they were exceptionally well-behaved and smart at paint.

We unexpectedly just lost XENA: Warrior Princess on October 28, 2010 to an inoperable intestinal tumor at 8 1/2 years old. She was fine one week and sick the next week. That after dealing with seizures (under control w/ meds) and having both knees rebuilt. She was my best friend and shop dog from six weeks old. I miss her so much. The depression is overwhelming.

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my precious Pom named Spike around a year ago. I replaced Spike with two Poms, but I still miss him.

XWP is a great name for a Rottie...all dark and scary, but with a heart of gold!

We named him BARON VON RUFFHAUSEN. What a character. A bit destructive on toys, but I don't care. I'll buy him more. I'll spoil him for his entire life. He's my best buddy now. Not afraid of anything. Loves being in my shop (cars) with me. Loves everyone and everything.

Now at just over seven months old. He's about 65# now, expected to be about 100#. He's laying on my feet as I write this...

It certainly can be a crushing blow to lose a pet and best friend. I think though, your new best friend is a good looking dog and will keep you company for a long time to come.

When we got Dutch, she was full grown but weighed only 55 pounds. Her hips bones and shoulder blades stuck up throung her back so high you could hang a hat on them. Her ribs too were clearly visible. She had open wounds on her face and chest and a dose of heartworms. She was found hogtied and left in the middle of a busy street. My son's next door neighbor stopped too get the dog off the street.

She's good to go now though. She weighs 75-80 pounds and is healty. I just wish she'd leave my sandwiches alone when I leave them unattended. She figures that if she can reach it, it must be hers.

Awww...the kind of person that would do that to an animal is the kind of person that I could happily shoot.

just remember this: If u lock ur dog in the trunk of ur car for 4 hours and if u lock ur wife in the trunk of your car for 4 hours, which one do u think will still be glad to see you when u open the trunk lid?????????

If u really have to think of this for awhile then u are one dumb sob...and u have never been married and certainly never owned a dog..

sorry melissa!!! I couldn't stop myself!!!

I give up. Melissa, help me. Whats the answer QUICK! I dont want to be labeled one dumb sob. I been married 26 years and had lots of dogs, I should know this.

Oh, I get it. I'll go with DOG. That's my final answer. Hope I didn't have to think too long on that one to qualify for dumb sob status.

Losing a dog is a horrible thing. My wife and daughter are into horses and if its possible they are even worse. I seriously doubt they will mourn my passing as much as they grieved for them horses. We've lost 3 over the years. They keep getting old horses, mild mannered and gentle but not long life spans.
I tell myself after I lose a dog, no more but I always get another in short order. Man or woman should have a dog. Some shouldn't have animals at all as mentioned earlier.

probably kinda tuff burying a horse n the back yard to!!!

I am not being sadistic here but about 50 miles from my home is one of the largest feline(tigers and lions) rescue centers in the U. S. Over 250 cats they keep and take excellent care of to, no cages, but big big pens and as few as 1 animall per cage even. What a set up and all volunteer to, they get some donations from Tony Stewart who is a big cat lover.and people who pay to walk through the area guided.. They sell no animals either and once they get to their rescue center, they live a good life until the end. My story is that, they rely of dead animals for their cats, as cats are solely meat eaters and we have quite a few amish farms around here and within a 100 mile radious they have a route they do daly and they pick up their dead cows and horses that for reaosn just died etc and bring um back to the center where they take sawall and small chain saws and just quarter the animals an throw them in a giant freezer . they don't skin um or nothig, heads and all, lets and all, no guts though, the help can't handle the guts as most of the dead amimals are smelley as hell but the cats love it. so no dead horse, cattle, chickens, road killed deer, coons (4 legged)dogs. goes to waste.

I always thought the lion was the kind of the beast, WRONG. a full grown tiger will eat up any lion in nothing flat.

trust me my 7 round PM9 would be no match for any of these animals, give him 6 rounds and savethe last for your head, for like I stated, they are meat eaters..

Big thumbs up on Rotties. I've had three in my lifetime, but they all had unfortunately short lives. The first was the best. We adopted him at 2yrs old, and he was hand trained and voice trained in Hungarian. He loved every member of our family. He was poisoned by a careless neighbor 2 years after we got him who was trying to kill some strays where we lived in the country. Horrible. Our second one lived with us for three years, she had a stroke while going on a jog with me one summer evening. Gut wrenching. Our last one had to be put down at 6 months old. The breeder lied about the xrays she provided of her parent's hips. They didn't belong to any dogs she owned. Saddest thing to see a young pup trying to pull herself along the ground with her front paws. Luckily, that woman ended up doing time for animal cruelty. Family couldn't take another hit at that point, and we went dog free for a number of years. Now that I am out of the house with my own family, we have become German Shepard fans. Almost as good as Rotts....

I had a Basset Hound for 14 years who was the dumbest critter I`ve ever roomed with.I loved him.I read an article in the local paper that ranked dogs for intelligence and Basset Hounds ranked 3rd from the bottom.I seem to remember that the only dogs dumber were dead Basset Hounds.Yeah,he was dumb all right. He lived in my house. He was warm in the winter, cool in the summer and fed regularly twice a day.He had a big fenced in back yard to play in and two other dogs in our family for buddies.People who really love and care for their pets are the best kind of people IMO.I tend to trust them more readily than others.

I have had many Rotts over the last 20 years. They are great, smart, watch dogs. They have many acres to roam here, people & vehicle free. I have had 2 rip tendons chasing coyotes. The only fault is see in them in the house, is they shed really bad, at least here in Az., twice a year. I have an old Rott now,11 years, but she still chases coyotes. I have 2 young blue Weimaraners, a male & female both neutered. They are great watch dogs also & not the shedding mess.

It does hurt bad losing dogs, but I did not find that to be the case with wives! Yes, that is plural! LOL

Good looking dog, Bill. Been trying to get the wife to agree to another dog for the last couple of years. I also found the last one we had in the middle of the road, not tied up though. Hard on the wife when the dog died as they bonded pretty good.
