View Full Version : April 15th Tax Day? No not yet.
Been wondering why today isn't tax day, even thought it is April 15th and that falls on a weekday? Here's why - it has to do with a holiday in Washington D.C. (about 20 minutes from where I sit now). The details behind that, and other amusing perspectives on DC's current politicians are at: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/04/15/federal-city-makes-stand/

Ditto that for me. I usually get more back than what I had to pay and I could have bought a nice kahr and a pile of accessories to go with it.
I'm not the Happy dwarf. I'd be grumpy but Jocko's already got dibs on that one.
I don't like getting returns. Means the feds been squatting on my money for a year. And when I owe, I wait until the last day to send 'em the check (which this year means Monday!)

I got back enough to buy 3/4 of a CM9. :D

Really got me this year. The wife worked part time plus draws SS and pays no taxes on the work pay. Put us right at the next bracket.
I could have bought about 5.5 CM9s or one really nice 1911 and a lot of rounds for it. :(
I understand that problem. I, myself, have three different wage/pension income streams and they each withhold as though they were the only one or not at all. Wife worked the first three months of 2010 before job went away, then unemployment for awhile, got a short term contract position, then back to unemployment through the rest of the tax year. Would have killed me trying to keep up. Went into my military pension account and took a best guess plus some margin at additional withholding.
Guessed wrong. I overestimated wife's probable income plus decided to replace all the windows in the house and that qualified for the max energy credit. Ended up with a $6K refund.
Decided that was bad planning and started to readjust for 2011 until I realized I have no idea what wife's income is actually going to be for the year and our cash savings accounts are drawing no significant interest anyway. Decided to just leave well enough alone. If I'm really lucky, aka wife gets a decent job, we'll get just a marginal refund next year.

I run a small business, so tax day for me will grudgingly be after at least one extension...probably two. I don't know why I have even attempted to stay in business and remained independent and self reliant for 28 years.... I get punished more and more every year.... including the zero profit years (like the last two:()

Like most of you, I could have bought a P9 - retail - for what I sent in extra this week.
Too many greedy democrats spending our money on junk and crooks, on both sides of the pond.

WTF kind of holiday is that? I looked at the calender & saw Sun. was Palm Sun. or some such. Thought maybe that was it.
I see people gettin' all giddy over their refund. The gub'ment has held THEIR money for up to a year without paying a penny's interest!
I, like some of you, could have bought many Kahrs with the check I sent them today!
The thing that stinks is that if they keep your money, you get it back with no interest. But God Forbid that you owe them very much - then they want the interest, fines, etc. And the tax code is so byzantine, it's really hard to figure out in advance exactly how much should be withheld.
I'd like to just park the money and pay them at the end of the year. I have enough self discipline to do that. But they'd never go for that because if people were forced to write a single check at the end of the year for the whole amount, I suspect there would be mobs every year with torches & pitchforks marching on Washington D.C. Politicians know that if they drain a little bit away from you each pay day, before the check even hits your bank, that you won't mind it as much than you would if you had to write one single big fat check for the whole amount.
Well, from the replies, sounds like all of the readers of this forum are in the 51% of the population that actually contribute to the tax rolls, rather than the 49% of the dependency class who don't pay federal income taxes. Chumps! (And yes I speak of myself when I say that.) Gee, I wonder what party the 49% most often vote for, eh?

Remember, every year they make the process simpler and easier to get through. They tell you that in that instuction set that gets bigger evey year.
I figure between what I paid on my 1040 and the 4 quarterly payments, 5 checks sent in all, I probably paid for the servo motor that moved one tail fin on one maverick missile, or something equivalent.

I wish I had to pay millions in taxes. That would mean my top line income would have to be at least 2 times what I had to pay to fund our government.

That's definitely the way to do it Ray.
