Finally got around to the local indoor (cheep) range today, with the PM45 and Commander and Tac-Sol .22 conversion.

In the PM45, I shot a box of 100 WWB 230g. Zero failures, rotating 4 magazines.

Then I shot 50 reload 230fmj. Zero failures, still rotating magazines.

Then I shot 50 reload 200ltc (lead, truncated cone). Zero failures, no bad leading.

Then I shot 50 reload 205g lsw (lead, semi wadcutter), zero failures.

Then I shot another 25 WWB 230g, no failures (to blow the lead out).

Then I shot some reload 185g...er... not good. This was an ammo problem. They are simply too long. They dont fit the magazine very nicely, and wont chamber all the way. Not a "fat reload" thing, but a "long reload" thing. I have a good relationship with the local commercial loader. They didn't chamber in the Commander either, but did j ust barely fit the magazine. Basically the ogive is hitting the rifling. You'd pull the mischambered round and there'd be rifling marks on it!

So... I had 75 WWB 230's left. Shot them all, except six which I kept for carry on the way home. Zero failures. The whole time, rotating my 4 mags.

A guy gave me some Russian steel case, that wouldn't function in his Kimber. La la la about 35 more shots of whatever it was... zero malfunctions.

I used one silhouette target, and except for a few rapid fire zingers, they all stayed in a six inch gaping hole at 50feet. To be honest, the first were really outta there. Its a muscle memory thing, where the 1911's are so second nature, I've got to treat this Kahr like a double action revolver. It took two magazines to get "dialed in" then they just sorta kept in a large group. I'm happy with that. Its a carry pistol. Any foe will be much much closer or not a foe.

If happiness is a warm gun, then ecstasy is a well functioning, loaded, warm gun in yer jeans pocket on the way home from the range.

I also put 100 WWB's through the Commander, and had a few slide stop malfunctions, and a few FTE's. BUT - this was a wholly new gun, assembled by me from good quality parts (Sig/StormLake Barrel, Caspian frame, mostly Colt small parts). I've got a 20lb spring on it, whereas the stock spring is 18lbs. I knew that gun was gonna need a little tweakage.

And, the Tac-Sol did its job. I'm having slide hold open problems, due to target loads being very light. Your mainspring is the real recoil spring. So... I'll probably have to get another, lighter spring from Wolff. When I did my part, it kept 10 shots in about 2 inches at 50 feet, and if I was benching it, I'm sure it would have done better. And.... it has a VERY tight chamber, so I had some tight ammo (Wally/Remington special cheapies) give one or two failure to fully chamber. I'm not perturbed with that. I need to bed the barrel, and settle on what ammo I want to use, make it function with that ammo. Got 550rounds of .22's out of the Tac-Sol, it went well overall.

And thats that.

nice report;. indeed those kahr 45"s are real POS guns. Kinda hard to figure why people buy them even. They just seem to go bang every time, not a good gun to own if ur a bitcher.. '
Give me a kel tek any day!!!

Yah and all that "frosty" is out of the barrel.

Crap, the barrel is so dang shiny, I'm surprised the bullets don't just drip right out the end of it when you carry the pistol nose down.

Just FYI, a commander length 1911 is supposed to have 22 lb recoil springs. A full size is 20 lb. I took my commander out Friday night for its maiden voyage, and I've got to say what a gun. Just something special about them.

Wolff's website cites 16lbs Govt, and 18lbs Commander as "standard", I was goin' by that.

Hmmm, I was going off industry standard, and Wilson's stuff. The other part of that is that I like heavy springs. They help when the chamber gets foul.

The Commander was built on Viking slide and Caspian frame. I didn't realize the Viking slide was made to fit only a Viking frame, having to do with rail clearance. That basically meant I had to alter the Caspian frame a little. I felt that it might leave the front of the frame battered where the slide hits the recoil spring guide - and the recoil spring guide meets the frame. There was a little tiny bit of "settling in" but I think its going to be ok. I may go back to a regular spring... or go to a regular weight Govt spring shortened a bit. There's a few tricks you can use when fine tuning.

Same thing on the Kahr barrel - some wear evident, but nothing major. You need to expect parts to wear into each other. Even my Sig P220 developed all sorts of wear patterns that once settled in, were just fine.
