View Full Version : Pocket Carrying the PM9

I'm going to paste what I originally posted on Defensive Carry as this forum is relevant to my question...
I pocket carry my PM9 in a Desantis Nemesis and it works flawlessly when wearing jeans (5 pocket style). The issue I'm having is when I wear Khakis, the design of the pocket (vertical slit, found on pretty much any khaki) seems to always catch of the rear of the slide right at the top portion of the pocket, preventing me from drawing the weapon and instead wasting time wiggling it free. I can assume I have very few options to get around this. I could either find khakis that have a 5th pocket style, which I have not been able to find any with large enough pockets. Another option could be finding a pocket holster that takes up a good portion of the pocket, preventing the materiel to bunch up and snag on the slide. One more option is to use a S&W J frame, which i've had no issues drawing with in any style pants, and be done with it and swallow the downsides of only having 5 rounds. I chose the PM9 because of it's size, weight, caliber and capacity and meant it to be my primary pocket carry weapon. I'd like to know if anyone has experienced this sort of issue I'm facing and if there's a viable solution. Thanks!

do you khakis have cargo pockets?

Unfortunately no. Dress code for my job is business casual so cargo pockets might not fair well.

try a ankle holster then, not as fast of a draw, but helps you to practice making yourself a small target!

Welcome to Kahrtalk!
Before retiring I used the SmartCarry holster when at the office. Both SmartCarry and pocket holster are equally slow with hands outside of your clothing. They're also equally quick draws once your hand is on the gun. However, you don't want to SmartCarry and walk around with your hand on the gun. :)
Joking aside, a big plus in my opinion with pocket carry is being able to easily get to your gun using just one hand, no garment "clearing" needs to be done. For this reason alone it might be worth the effort to get your pocket carry issue figured out.

tango. not being sassy, but IMO live with it. If u can't work around the clothing thing, again live with it. I pocket carry my PM in every kind of jeans made, ride a Harley with it in my pocket. damn gun is certainly not in a fast draw area BUT IT IS THERE. being more aware of your situation and area goes further than maybe a split second faster in certain cloths etc. IMO the bg always has the upper hand as u can't just shoot a fella that looks like a Bg but the BG can certainly shoot you for no damn reason, so that fast draw area IMO is kinda of a mute point If I am in an area of suspicision my hand is in my left pocket or damn close to it and my situational awareness has reached a higher level. I don't get to paranoid when carrying either, so as I read alot on this and other forums, everyone has their own methods of carrying and why. ur question is hard to answer for in my home town and near by town, we don't have that kind of out right violence at all, but if you lived around cabrenni square or some areas of St. Louis, u probably want to have gun in hand alot more than gun in pocket.
Just for me common sense prevails.. and as u know there is always gonna be "what ifs". U can't plan for that either..

you will not have this problem with a blackhawk #4 size holster.

You might try the DeSantis SuperFly. It is basically what you have with another flap that aids in concealment and helps keep it in place in large pockets. It works in khaki's for me.

I use the same holster with my slash-pocket pants. No problems. Is it as clean and easy as drawing from an IWB or OWB holster? No. Pocket carry never will be. However, with practice, my PM never hangs up on my pockets.

TANGOLIMA600:
You might want to try the Remora. This thing sticks like glue in your pocket or IBW. I used it with my LCR and yes revolvers work better in Khaki pockets becasue the space you get from the cyclinder. The C/PM9 works well for me as long as the Khaki pocket is factory sawn to the side seam vs lose like jeans.

Maybe I'm not understanding the problem. When I draw from the pocket, I tilt my wrist and tilt the barrel up as I draw the pistol out toward my rear - never had an issue with any pocket style with either my PM9 or my LCPs...including drawing under stress during a low light pistol class. Maybe that technique would also work for you?
I really like the #6 holster from www.hiddenholsters.net (http://www.hiddenholsters.net). The anti-print panel looks like a wallet in my front pockets, and I had Jim add a thumb push-off, which results in a very secure draw. Wait time is 12 weeks, but worth it IMHO.

I have mine in a size 03 right now, love it! The Remora holsters are very nice as well, but do add a lot of noticeable bulk over the Blackhawk.

I put the "hook" portion of commercial Velcro on the outside of all my pocket holsters for my MK9.
Makes them stick better to the pocket when drawing.
During practice, one of on pare of very loose pants the whole pocket comes out, but the holster does stick to the pocket material still.
I do have to clean the lint off of the Velcro a few time a year.
I have had it bump the top of the pocket, but I never considered in a problem. I'll tear the pants if I need to really get the gun out. I'm OK with that.

Thanks everyone for the welcome and the insightful replies, I now have some options to look at next time in at my gun shop. After extensive practice doing draw drills from my khakis (to the point of losing some skin on my finger... Itt'l grow back..) I find that the draw time is impacted very little from the snag when it does occur. I feel confident carrying it now and am currently looking at my options concerning a concealable magazine pouch.. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Very interesting idea - using the hooked Velcro. Where exactly on the holster do you put the Velcro?
Thanks,

I glued (epoxy on one, super glue on another. Both have held up well) it to the outside of the holster. On the inside, next to my leg is too rough on my skin in some of the thin pockets. With most pants it doesn't matter.

Late to the party but did want to give you one more option. I also mix jeans with Dockers. I've found that this holster works with both. It took me ages to buy into the concept, but after using one for a bit I found it's perfect for my needs. Jeans, Dockers, or Cargo pockets. I use this style with a P380 and PM9 with CT laser.

The Recluse seems to be quite popular, and I know people who swear by them. For me, though, there's something not quite right about a trigger guard like that. Maybe it's paranoia, but I want nothing at all near that trigger. Holsters go through a lot of bending and flexing.
I have a BlackHawk number 3 for my dress pants, but I found it hard to get a hand on the grip very easily, so I don't use it. I got a Desantis Nemesis, which I like, and then just picked up the Desantis Superfly (same size exactly as the Nemesis), which isn't as attractive as the Nemesis due to the velcro strip and "bubbles" look, but it grips very well, and is my holster of choice. I don't use the flap it comes with, though. Too much bulk and makes it a lot slower to withdraw the gun from the pocket. I found this with the Recluse, too.
Anyway, just my $0.02.
